i was thinking about why this is. maybe i'm overthinking it but it makes me think that UBI in this case is serving as a kind of bribe for lumpenproletariat NEETs -- natural recruits for fascists -- in exchange for not questioning or overthrowing existing social relations, as usual. kind of an alignment between them and certain sectors of the professional STEM class

There is a point buried in there somewhere about how bourgeois culture overcomplicates very simple things to extract a premium for something that basically boils down to presentation - but it's not THE LEFT that's doing this. Bourgeois values aren't leftist.

A Finnish restaurateur in Germany got boycotted when people found out he's involved in an organisation called "Veljesapu" (Brethren Help) that was originally formed to aid Finnish SS volunteer veterans and their families, as the Finnish state did not provide any aid for them after the war. Of course the restaurant and the owner released a statement denying any Nazi sympathies. The web page of the organization basically says that "Veljesapu isn't at all about supporting Nazis, we just publish a newsletter called ACHTUNG! that mostly contains articles denying the veracity of historical proof that Finnish SS men partook in all the atrocities that other SS men liked to do, because other outlets for some reason don't want to publish that kind of thing."

I don't think his interview is going to help vis-�-vis people boycotting his lovely establishment.

It's a pretty straightforward policy that supports their material circumstances. If nothing else 12k USD a year guarantees that even if they get their careers destroyed for posting epic merchant memes, they can at least buy chicken tendies every day. Eliminating the threat of absolute destitution would be a psychological relief for anybody.

UBI is definitely bad as a Trojan horse for destroying the welfare state, but welfare programs are already so heavily means-tested that a UBI would benefit way more people than many other policy platforms.
