I'm reading the Re:Zero manga, on the "second" series now(just a continuation of the first 12-chapter series it seems, albeit with a different artist) and it seems good as hell. I remember hearing about the anime of it and how it's an isekai where the protagonist is just a schlub with no superpowers or typical isekai protagonist benefits, and that seems to be true, outside of being Anime Groundhog Day. It's a rather eccentric and weird series but charming too, all the characters introduced in the first series are pretty likeable(barring the villain, obviously).

I just got to the end of the chapter of the second series where he goes to sleep after a miraculous and wonderful few days and winds up dead in his sleep somehow, erasing all that progress and trust he made with everyone and rewinding back to the bed he was in after the end of the first series and I think it's safe to say it's dug into me like a tick. I can only imagine that with the maids keeping an eye on him to see if he's a spy, now that he knows he's rewound back to waking up in the bed, he's going to act super loving suspicious because he already knows everyone in a bunch of ways and they're going to think he's a spy now, let's see if I'm proven right.

Also this second series's artist is much more pro-fanservice than the first one, clearly, what with upping every girl from the first series by a cup or two, and that...offputting "imagination" page. Other than that it's been pretty tame though, which is nice.

edit: how is the re:zero manga adaptation compared to every other adaptation of the property, is the anime vastly superior, etc, what's the best version?

The anime adaptation is good and probably preferable to the manga, at least for the 3 arcs the anime covers.

Re:Zero is good and probably my favorite isekai series. It has some dumb stuff (primarily related to romance), but the good parts are *really* good. Once you finish the 3 arcs covered in the anime/manga you should dig up the WN translations (they're floating around somewhere). The 4th arc is even better than the first 3, though it's really long (if adapted "faithfully" it would probably be at least as long as the first three arcs combined). The whole gimmick of the protagonist having to figure out an "answer" to dealing with opponents/situations far beyond his ability to directly confront is a good one, and serves as a motivation for him to learn about and connect with other characters (since he generally needs their assistance to deal with the enemies he faces).

The author has a really strong knack for crafting exciting/memorable situations and creating characters with very distinct voices/designs. Even during post-anime content I find myself having a very easy time imagining the way the characters look and sound, despite having not actually seen them animated.

Whoaaaa, I honestly was dubious this would happen. While Bookworm is probably my favorite isekai overall, it's long as hell and a lot of the best stuff is in the second half.

It looks like they've changed up the cast from the audio drama. Maine is Yuka Iguchi intsead of Miyuki Sawashiro, and Ferdinand is apparently Sho Hayami?

For that matter, if they're giving Ferdinand top billing then I have no idea what part they're actually going to adapt since he doesn't even show up until part 2.

Ostensibly Dragon Quest, though the terms were used in Final Fantasy and Zelda, too. While those series provided the most direct inspiration, they themselves were inspired by Lord of the Rings, which in the Japanese translation called Sauron a Maou. So it's all Tolkien's fault.

Yeah my gut reaction was excitement but as I calmed down I realized I had no idea how this is gonna happen. If it's a 2 cour thing with 12 eps each they wouldn't be able to get anywhere important even if they cut half the WN chapters. If Ferdinand's been cast maybe they're gonna start with arc 3, since that's where a lot of isekai tend to start anyway. But god I hope not. And also I still have 50 chapters left in arc 3 so this might disincentivize my reading if it gets far enough...

My current progress: Maine is now selling edutainment materials to noble children, and renting out books to the poorer ones in exchange for stories she can use in her next book.

I'll give it a try, though I've not jumped into webnovels and such after reading/watching something because I'm not sure I can go from a fully visual rendition to a fully textual version like that. Do you happen to have a link to the webnovel translations I can tuck away for later? I'm liking the third arc where Subaru just shoves his entire foot into his mouth in front of the entire ruling class of the kingdom as well as the best soldiers, then proceeds to push the entire other foot in there immediately afterward with emilia, it was spectacularly done and also yeeeeeeeeeeesh

Novel Updates is the... aggregator? you'd want to look at. You can find links to the majority (all?) of fan translations that exist for Asian WNs or LNs. Here's a search for Re:Zero that pulls up both the WN and LN.

I wish the search wasn't unusable if you're looking for anything other than a title, because they've got a lot of tags that I'd like to browse through in different combinations to find new stuff. At least you can look at one at a time, if you can find a series that has that tag.

Holy poo poo. I'd occasionally seen the "~best girl~" meme reference Rem but figured it was just oh she's the cutesy maid character, the typical moeblob type. I was proven wrong pretty quickly after her being introduced, but boy howdy, she's a hell of a character in her own right, maybe, indeed, the best girl. I'm in the rejection chapter right now, and drat it's good and painful.

I also like that the series just finally outright goes for it and answers the question of just what exactly happens if Subaru tells someone about his respawn ability in the most brutal way possible.

This is an excellent series, I'd always meant to watch the show but frankly I don't really have time to watch much anime anymore and kept putting it off. I'm wagering the anime isn't as just utterly grotesque with its gore, right? No hyper detailed cutouts of subaru's throat, windpipe, jugular, etc or half his torso being smash away by the ball and chain, probably heavily censored or offscreen right

The anime certainly doesn't have any detailed gore. It tends to go for occasional brutality to reinforce it's horror aspects, with the usual blurry shadows for something that would be excessive.

It's distinctly horror-themed using it's Groundhog-day-esque setup to show Subaru just how badly things can go depending on his actions, but it mostly sticks to Subaru's POV, and he's the one who has the worst things happen to him, so when he'd pass out or die it's up to your imagination what it actually looks like after.

Haven't read the novel either (watched the anime) but I'll say feel like the gore aspect is necessary for the story. The main character's only power is coming back to life after he dies - if dying wasn't brutal and horrific then the story would have no stakes at all because he would be completely invincible (well, even moreso than he already is). Like if he wasn't terrified of and traumatized by death then he would just keep restarting over and over to get a "perfect run".

You're welcome, if you're averse to horrific violence then the series wouldn't be for you. It is unabashed with its gore, but at the same time I think the violence is good at getting across the horrific nature of what is happening. The cult stuff in particular is just...well, I honestly felt a chill go up my spine at just how brutal it was, while at the same time it so perfectly encapsulated the just deadness in his eyes, the emptiness he felt, of Subaru as he made his way home. The series can of course jump between goofy and serious within a single panel's time, but it's definitely a well-told isekai of someone who is just plain normal, not some overpowered godbeing in a world full of them. His only skill is respawning, and nothing more, but he keeps trying his best anyways, so it's hard not to root for him. It really conveys his frustration so well at having to repeat the same events, especially the really dreadful ones, but he keeps trying to push forward with a smile until he can't anymore.

Edit: this series is really just fantastic for being about a character so purely powerless that he is ultimately forced to rely on others. Sure he can do stuff on his own occasionally, but almost every major situation requires him to negotiate and ally himself with other people. The current bit I'm on the whale hunt is a perfect example of this. He went multiple rounds trying to brute force his way through it all and realized that's not going to get him anywhere, and now we are here. It's great.

Not gonna lie, that just sounds like torture porn. Reasonably well written it seems, but torture porn nonetheless. Not really. It's just that when things go bad, things go REALLY BAD, and it's not afraid to show it instead of a blood splatter from offscreen or something. His ability to respawn upon death is one thing, but he also has save points it seems. It's an interesting idea. It's groundhog day but only triggered by dying, I'd recommend giving the first arc a watch/read to see how you like it, the one where he gets transported to another world and immediately gets mugged in an alley.

Right now I'm reading through the white whale fight, and the way it uses/plays with the consequences of revealing his respawn ability to others is just fantastic.

Gratuitous is exactly the word I'd say depicts things like overlord but not re:zero. Re:zero's violence is horrific and extremely gory in detail in the manga, but it never feels like it's for the sake of being violent outside of one particular character (betelgeuse, who is just a sadistic madman in general). Stuff like overlord has grisly violence just because it can a lot of the time. For me, my reaction to re:zero's violence is often "oh, uh, gently caress" while overlord's is pretty much "this is trying to hard to be edgy".

Just caught up to the manga translations where Subaru is perched on the white whale's horn, and I hope he just gets right up in its face and kills it by explaining his respawn ability or something equally ridiculous. exploiting his inability to explain why he knows so many things or what will happen to people by killing a godlike being with it would be the most ridiculous and hilarious outcome for this to me, but I'm sure whatever happens I'll enjoy, the whole battle has been fantastic. Was this adapted in the anime as well, or was this past where it ended?

On to the webnovel! (or are there good light novel translations available?)

The fourth arc goes in a kind of interesting direction with how it deals with Subaru's whole mindset. The third arc is sort of about (broad/vague spoilers)him gaining the willpower to be willing to go through terrible experiences to ~protect what he loves~, but the fourth arc (similarly vague spoilers that don't reference any actual events) instead addresses the downside to him willingly subjecting himself to repeated suffering without any concern for his own mental and physical well-being. Arc 4 also reveals a lot about the broader setting compared with the previous arcs, with some pretty huge twists, though even after it there are still a bunch of huge mysteries. The mysteries are probably one of the most compelling things about the story; for whatever reason the author gives me confidence that the mysteries will have satisfying answers (partly because what answers have been doled out have been satisfying).

I would recommend the WNs just because both 1. the manga will likely takes ages to finish arc 4 and 2. it will likely cut out a bunch (I believe some "lives" were even cut from arc 3?). The trimming isn't necessary bad from a story-telling perspective, but I'm kind of biased in favor of seeing every "run-through" because they all contribute a bunch in the 4th arc. The translation is sort of simultaneously bad and good. It's bad in the sense of having semi-frequent minor grammar mistakes and being kind of "overly literal," but it does a strangely good job of capturing characters' voices. Overall I liked it, but other people have had trouble with it so YMMV.

Controversial opinion - I actually don't really like Rem much, even though her role in the story is fine. Largely because I'm not really a fan of (these aren't spoilers for Captain Invictus) love interests who are totally fine with the protagonist being in love with someone else and being "loyal" to them regardless. The way the story deals with the romance(s) with Rem and Emilia is probably the one thing I don't really like about Re:Zero, even if it's nothing particularly bad compared with other WNs (it just stands out in comparison with how good everything else is).

Nah, it's good. Unless you're specifically averse to having any sort of bad events or tension, I can pretty unequivocally say it's significantly better than pretty much every other WN-derived isekai series (except arguably Bookworm). Any bad things that happen are also usually followed by some sort of "triumph," so the overall tone isn't really depressing even if specific events are.

Gal tensei isn't particularly good and also got axed extremely hard right as it was gearing up another arc lol

Immediately cuts from the beginning of a new adventure straight to an animal house ending pretty much

I remember the anti-isekai being posted when it only had like three chapters, it seemed rather trashy but had promise(the whole "save the would-be isekai'd guy in our world so he doesn't become the dragon quest-type hero in their world" is a neat idea), good to see the fourth starts immediately with the princess looking like she's going to pull out her magic sword but basically yanks a ridiculously detailed machine gun out instead and is all "let's see how you take this world's weaponry", this is the sort of stupidity I can get behind
