Goon DJs, do any of you lot ever play funk and such? I have some but not loads and I'm wondering if you've got any recommendations. I've agreed to DJ an awards event for a friend and I've got the vast majority of it sorted but I'm just wondering if I've missed anything particularly cool like this bomb. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RecY5iZn6B0

Assuming you want stuff similar to what you posted, these should all move a crowd: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwHi10qX8u8 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VKgL5s3bERg https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pqTZK51tGDE https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbV1DPrGUQI https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T2kAinTsqgQ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmqBRFApleQ

This is very true. But I find funk to be one of the few genres where I enjoy pretty much the entire spectrum of music it has to offer. Funk forever!

Can I make another complaint about Serato please? The joint I'm playing at on Friday has asked for a list of tracks I'm playing. Serato has an option to export the history which is really loving cool. HOWEVER it only puts the loving track name and ignores the artist name so unless the track has the artist name in the track title, it won't put it in the file it outputs. UNLESS you upload it to Serato's site where you can then copy paste it with the actual artist names but you have to edit the poo poo out of the text to get rid of the timings etc... It's such a simple ask and it can't do it properly. wtf??

It's definitely not normal behaviour, nobody usually gives two fucks. Thing is though they want it BEFORE the event but what DJ actually plans out poo poo like that? I've tried and I'm usually 3 tracks deep before I've veered off on a musical tangent because that's what I'm feeling fits best after this track etc etc... So I'll just supply them with some tracks names and play other poo poo, it's not like anyone's going to check or shut the thing down.

Post your best/worst joke track selections/stupid sample poo poo. Gotta be more creative than a rickroll, but groan-inducing nonetheless. I used to open sets at my local arcade bar with this, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VmCqn-DNSA0 then I'd drop Working Man. Later in the evening when I'd stop being a jukebox and actually start mixing, I'd bring in the synth intro to 2112 directly into Quad City DJs' Space Jam theme, which is unironically a great way to segue into a dirty breaks & bass house set.

I want to pick up a second turntable to start practicing DJing on vinyl more but I really don't want to spend a lot on it. I currently have an AT-LP120 which works perfect for what I need and wanted to pick up another used one to pair with it. I could grab a silver one for about $150, but my current one is black and I feel like that might drive me crazy having two different colored tables. I also don't think I have ever seen someone DJing with two different colored turntables and am wondering if that would make me look like a weirdo.

^ I did something similar a few years back at a frathouse frosh party with the Meek Mill diss. Of course, this is Toronto so I had to spin it back and play the actual Drake tune. These days though I'd probably just play the Pusha tune back-to-back, and then get stabbed over it. That was the same frat jam that had me set up on an ancient wooden table, probably as old as the house itself. Several people were dancing on it and it was giving by like half a foot, my CDJs bouncing everywhere. I thought, "well, if this is how I lose my gear, at least it's a good loving story." I was thinking about something the other day; probably my favourite part of having learned to DJ is also my favourite part of learning to play drums: honing your internal meter to where you can unconsciously recognize musical phrase. I can be in a noisy bar, hear a song I recognize and internalize its bar-bear structure to the point where I can leave the room, come back a minute later and be bang-on in the phrasing. I can even judge it pretty accurately with the stripe waveform and time-remaining displays now too. Hot cues, loops, memory locations and beats-to-cue meters are all a tremendous help in developing this skill but I barely use them anymore (hot cues excepted and only for studio mixes) and that's a pretty good feeling. As soon as I get this headband mount for my Action Camera I'm gonna record and upload some four-deck minimix videos.

Gentlemen: I want to build up a very basic library of tracks in order to practice the basics of mixing. I'm browsing several digital stores but I get confused with so much variety. Could you recommend an album or two of the following genres? 1: Uplifting trance. 2: Deep House I'm interested in solid tracks that I could use to practice, but also throw at a basic party if the chance arises. Priority is good price-per-track, not novelty. Also, it's just me, or most of the album's under "deep house" are not that "deep" as they should?

Super86 posted:Gentlemen: Your best bet is to probably join an online record club like Club Killers, where you pay an annual fee and get unlimited track downloads. That is by far the best bang for your buck vs. buying individual songs. The issue is probably finding a subscription-based service that is going to have the genres of music you are interested in. I don’t actually recommend Club Killers for Deep House and Trance unless something has changed recently. As for deep house and uplifting trance music, I can give you a few artists to check out. Don’t really know albums. Trance Armin van Buuren - older stuff especially BT Markus Schulz Ferry Corsten Deep House Lane 8 Jody Wisternoff Actually, check out Lane 8’s SoundCloud, he does a mix every quarter with a lot of good Deep House and lists all of the tracks. The Anjunadeep label has a SoundCloud as well that you’ll want to check out for more track ideas.

CK isn't what you want for deep house/uplifting trance. It's more for open format DJs. I'm pretty sure they have a couple songs on there but you're better off buying a bunch of songs on Beatport.
