Top brass at Fort Drum accepted Rapone’s resignation Monday after an earlier reprimand for “conduct unbecoming of an officer.” Rapone said an investigation found he went online to advocate for a socialist revolution and disparage high-ranking officers. Officially, the Army said in a statement only that it conducted a full investigation and “appropriate action was taken.”

An unrepentant Rapone summed up the fallout in yet another tweet Monday that showed him extending a middle finger at a sign at the entrance to Fort Drum, accompanied by the words, “One final salute.”

“I consider myself a revolutionary socialist,” the 26-year-old Rapone told The Associated Press. “I would encourage all soldiers who have a conscience to lay down their arms and join me and so many others who are willing to stop serving the agents of imperialism and join us in a revolutionary movement.”

Rapone said his journey to communism grew out of his experiences as an Army Ranger in Afghanistan before he was accepted into the U.S. Military Academy

For what sort of justice do you call this? People like aristocrats, goldsmiths, or money-lenders, who either do no work at all or do work that’s really not essential, are rewarded for their laziness or their unnecessary activities by a splendid life of luxury. But laborers, coachmen, carpenters, and farmhands, who never stop working like cart-horses at jobs so essential that, if they did stop working, they’d bring any country to a standstill within twelve months—what happens to them? They get so little to eat, and have such a wretched time, that they’d be almost better off if they were cart-horses. Then, at least, they wouldn’t work quite such long hours, their food wouldn’t be very much worse, they’d enjoy it more, and they’d have no fears for the future. As it is, they’re not only ground down by unrewarding toil in the present, but also worried to death by the prospect of a poverty-stricken old age—since their daily wages aren’t enough to support them for one day, let alone leave anything over to be saved up when they’re old.

Can you see any fairness or gratitude in a social system which lavishes such great rewards on so-called noblemen, goldsmiths, and people like that, who are either totally unproductive or merely employed in producing luxury goods or entertainment, but makes no such kind provision for farmhands, coal-heavers, laborers, carters, or carpenters, without whom society couldn’t exist at all? And the climax of ingratitude comes when they’re old and ill and completely destitute. Having taken advantage of them throughout the best years of their lives, society now forgets all the sleepless hours they’ve spent in its service, and repays them for all the vital work they’ve done by letting them die in misery. What’s more, the wretched earnings of the poor are daily whittled away by the rich, not only through private dishonesty, but through public legislation. As if it weren’t unjust enough already that the man who contributes most to society should get the least in return, they make it even worse and then arrange for injustice to be legally described as justice.

In fact, when I consider any social system that prevails in the modern world, I can’t, so help me God, see it as anything but a conspiracy of the rich to advance their own interests under the pretext of organizing society. They think up all sorts of tricks and dodges, first for keeping safe their ill-gotten gains, and then for exploiting the poor by buying their labor as cheaply as possible. Once the rich have decided that these tricks and dodges shall be officially recognized by society—which includes the poor as well as the rich—they acquire the force of law. Thus, an unscrupulous minority is led by its insatiable greed to monopolize what would have been enough to supply the needs of the whole population.

Marie Kondo isn't especially capitalist? The next logical step that she never actually (afaik) takes is to encourage people to stop buying so much crap, but there's definitely an element of anti-consumerism in encouraging people to live better lives by not accumulating so much crap.

I guess the whole evaluating your emotional connection to consumer goods is pretty capitalist.

I don't know if it's especially her or just the cult that has erupted around her. There's a whole subreddit of people who post stuff that's more capitalism.png, but honestly what gets me is that she's selling a kind of absolution built around this woo-woo idea that Japanese people are some kind of wabi-sabi minimalism fairies.

It's bullshit, they hoard pretty good around there too (also thanks to omiyage and stuff you just can't throw out), the only thing that limits it is the fact that living space comes at a premium, moreso than some other places. Futhermore, the folks living in the blue tarp huts in Yoyogi park are better at "KonMari" than she is by sheer force of being homeless, but nobody pays much attention to them, even though they're everywhere, it's like they're imaginary. I mean, despite the very visible blue tarps in every city, nobody talks about it in Japan, like "Homelessness? Ehhh (sucks teeth)." Get a few drinks (or zero) into any older person and they'll tell you what neighborhoods the "buraku" live in though.

Anyway, she's got a Netflix show, so she's doing okay. Hey, find joy, right?

Edit: It also occurs to me now that it might not be obvious how getting rid of "clutter" is a great way to make room to acquire more poo poo. If her stated goal succeeds in a permanent fashion, she's out of business (consulting, at least), but assuming people will always hoard more poo poo, the cycle only works in her favor. I wouldn't say that Nitori and so on built her in a loving secret lab somewhere to increase consumer goods turnover so as to sell more new lovely furniture and stuff, but it's not like they're crying over this.

Either way, she ultimately makes her killing off of selling people the idea/feeling that they aren't consumers, but rather quasi-spiritual curators of things to which they are dependent upon for joy.

What she's advocating is definitely a very Japanese kind of philosophy, but that's not too say it is The Japanese Philosophy. Sure Japan is a hyper consumerist place and plenty of people clutter their lives with meaningless garbage, but there's also a very old and long standing asceticism and minimalism that a lot of people still adhere to. That idea of the 4.5 tatami mat room with a couple of futons on the floor (that get folded up and stored in a cupboard every morning) is a very quintissentially Japanese kind of ideal, even if probably increasingly few people actually adhere to it.

The comparison to homeless people isn't really fair either, there's a difference between consciously avoiding the accumulation of junk, and being unable to buy stuff at all. But yeah homelessness is definitely one of those no-go issues there. The problem is they don't have many/any shelters that allow alcohol, so most of the folk you see shacked up in Yoyogi park or under the kosoku doro down in Shibuya are alcoholics.

I wouldn't say it's "The" Japanese philosophy. I simply suspect that people are sold on it that way because of a lack of exposure to the actual culture(s). If anything it's a rehash of old fetishization harkening back as far as late 19th century England when they had Japanese model villages on display. I just want to point out that the landscape in a working-class Japanese home is different from what she's selling, and is more representative of the reality of life for many if not most people there, as opposed to something that you'd see in a fashion magazine. The restrictions in terms of how much crap you have are more a matter of practicality based on the availabiity of space rather than a philosophical or aesthetic choice, and in my experience most of the homes store as much crap as they can, which would be the reason why you'd have a professional "de-clutterer" like her. In that context, she's totally spot on, as the endless souvenirs on shelves gathering dust are indeed a source of stress. I helped clean out a friend's parent's home, and probably tossed several hundred kilograms of old random poo poo over the course of a week; Mostly stuff dating back from the Showa period that nobody had seen in decades.

As for the homeless thing? I insist. I mean, if you want to learn a real lesson about minimalism, ask anybody in a blue tarp, not the lady with a book deal. I'd not be surprised if most of those people can trace their circumstances back to direct or after-effects of what happened to Japan in the 90's, where everybody decided they needed an extra golf course leveraged up the rear end. It's not even sane to consider some idealized notion of Japan as "enlightened" with respect to doing-without when many people just did not/do not have a drat choice. Selling that kind of notion seems profitable though. The people who buy it are desperate in different ways, though.

Edit: Reflecting on your earlier point, it would make more sense for her to tell people to ask if poo poo brings them joy before they buy it in the first place. But then they wouldn't need her to come to their house and enlighten the poo poo out of them.
