The Gamerevolution article mentions normal checkpoints, so it sounds like it's a mix of spread out checkpoints and using Soul Tethers for discretionary in-betweens.quote:Wrath promises to take up a fair chunk of your time. There are secrets galore, power-ups and Soul Tethers (essentially respawn points that can be used alongside the game’s more traditional checkpoints) to find in crevasses, caves, and other hidden areas.

Either let me save manually, or give me checkpoints. You know, with all of these great, retro shooters coming out I really hope that Doom Eternal graduates from its predecessor's monster arena school of level design.

Honestly, I wish that this didn't also copy the oldschool dark horror fantasy aesthetic. It's a bit boring. Game looks fun, though.

It's literally the Darkplaces engine so I bet you can plop down the console and type save whenever you want, or bind f6 to save quicksave.

I know it's a minor nitpick but jumping in the water should wash the blood off the blade. Hope they fix that.

Mordja posted:Digging the guns & gore. Agreed there, level design is the main thing I'd like to see them get ambitious with in Doom Eternal, since everything else is perfect. Even with them having the locked arenas thing, the level design was a big step in the right direction. I liked that the levels had enough twists, turns, optional places to jump and secrets that you even had an in-game map. It felt like the best FPS level design in a long time. But mixing up the arena formula and playing around with the possibilities would be great.

the trailer says its coming from quake modding vets but the only name i've seen is in that one article saying the lead is someone called killpixel. anyone heard of this duder? curious if he's released any maps or anything. trailer looks sick as poo poo though, i like the environment design.

He made this unfinished but kind of cool map a couple years back. In the comments he hints he has something else in the works for which this was a dry run — guess he was right.

I was getting some serious Hexen 2 vibes until it opened up into that huge swamp, and then all I wanted was to see some bunny hopping through that massive area. I really hope movement will be a big focus of the game because Dusk has set the bar pretty high, and what's on show in this video looks a bit stiff and slippery but that might just be IGN guy's inability to turn corners without running into walls. I also think saves as pickups is a great idea, fight me.

Whenever I see weird save systems I flash back to that bad Ultima Underworld successor last year where you have a Souls-like bonfire system but the game literally doesn't save progress until you beat a level which could be like 90 minutes. Just make a loving normal save system!

Just make a loving normal save system! I'm struggling to think of a worst save system than the original Crash Bandicoot's where you had to collect three tokens in order to go to a bonus level where you were given the option to save your game if you managed to complete it. The problem is that since this bonus area was located in the middle of a stage, the game only saved your progress up to the last stage you completed. So if you managed to beat a hard level you were forced to play like 3/4 ths of another level just to get a chance to save. The whole thing was a mess.

I'm really looking forward to this one, when I first checked out the Steam page I was disappointed since it said there would be no version for Linux and was quite confused since Darkplaces works fine on Linux but after reading the FAQ it seems like us and the Mac users will have to wait for early 2020 before trying this one out. I might just buy the game and try to run it trough Proton or maybe I can even point my Darkplaces install to the Wrath folder in the meantime. I really love the low-poly models combined with the pixelated textures, it gives me serious nostalgic feelings looking at the game, it looks like a game I would have loved to play as a younger lad. 3D Realms have been doing fine work as of late with this and Ion Maiden both looking great, I just hope they don't gently caress it up.

With all of the new Wrath stuff dropping today I'm not surprised this got missed, but one of the devs for Timesplitters Rewind posted this earlier today. The video shows a current build and explains a lot of what has happened behind the scenes on the project. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HkltJm1lWMc

Yep, he actually announced the project sneakily nearly two years ago on Doomworld. https://www.doomworld.com/forum/topic/95047-yet-another-90s-inspired-shooter/ Unfortunately the WIP video in that thread has been deleted, so you can't compare now and then.

I'm replaying Arcane Dimensions and dang-- trying to go back to vanilla Quake levels after AD is a weird experience. Even that "5th Episode" DOPA release seems lame compared to AD levels. Sock and his levels are a treasure.

the weapon models are trash but the game is a seriously impressive piece of work. the fact it still works in a time when those graphics look cheesy and old is amazing, i wonder how people would have responded to it in the era when those graphics were cutting edge

DoomRL Arsenal updated after 4 years. https://forum.zdoom.org/viewtopic.php?f=19&t=37044 It now has ingame documentation so you can play it without having a wiki open and the wad open in Slade for all the poo poo the wiki's wrong about.

Dusk also definitely seems like it's one thing at first and ends up being another. When the first things I saw were all farms, cows, scarecrows and cultists and poo poo I thought it was going to be dumb, but it goes some real interesting places thematically the deeper you get in. Also even in the farm parts the gameplay is good.
