Having done karate to black belt as a young 'un, it's just fun! It has the same dopamine rush as scoring a goal or beating someone in Mario Kart, but you get a workout at the same time. Also karate is an especially useless martial art and I wish I'd spent my time doing something more fighty, but I guess learning how to be somewhat mindful about fighting was good as a teenager

Nope. I did briefly get roped into doing judo as a child. Extremely briefly. I did mean it when I said the notion of competition-for-fun was really weird. It's something you have to do day to day, obviously, but I don't get enjoying it against people you actually like. Same with fighting. But the basic sparring stuff is still there, including a good guard position and good punches and elbows. The best possible defence though is just loving running. But yeah, I'm starting to think I should get back into some proper practice.

I have no idea if the OU was free. However, I managed to get a loan which I never intend on paying back to cover my recent studies. So basically, I went to uni in like 2001-2003 and completed 1.5 years worth of study. Then in 2012 I did 2 OU modules which I paid for (with an employer paying half) taking me up to 2 years worth of study credits. I chose an OU Open Degree which is not a named degree, but allows you to maximise the credits you got from previous study, and then chose the modules that you wish to study, essentially creating your own degree. You can get a loan for an Open Degree, I was able to because I had paid off the previous 2 years worth of loans (about 6k total because back then my fees were 1.5k a year iirc). Also because this was still technically my first degree. SO I end up in 2017 doing what amounted to a full time final year of uni, with 4 modules from the OU (Data Management, User Interface Design, Software Engineering and Marketing + Finance) and I got a loan for this which covered the whole thing, so I paid nothing out of pocket for the OU stuff. I don't really intend on paying the loan back. This is the sketchiest degree ever, but I have parlayed it into studying a masters in Data Science remotely with Edinburgh University. Annoyingly because this course is up to 6 years I can't get a loan, because for post-grad stuff they only give loans for part time study up to 3 years. I need to speak to the administrators to try and sort this, but it's not been top priority yet. I don't really think of the student loan as a loan, because if you are earning under the threshold you don't pay, and if you never pay it back there's no problem.

So if you don't already have a degree I think it's almost certain that if you live in England or Wales you can get a loan to study as part of a degree with the OU. Or indeed any other university degree, but the OU is super easy and really well setup for distance learning. I cannot comment on what it's like if you are in Scotland or NI.

OU is very expensive. Also the way you can do courses has become much more proscribed. I signed up in 2013 for an Open Degree, but instead of being able to do a fairly random selection of courses (obviously at the requisite levels) - I'm old, I have degrees falling out of my ears, they now have these 'pathways'. I was also cheesed off with the initial bunch of short courses I did - no individual marking, no individual commenting on submitted work, just a generic report at the end covering the entire cohort and you were supposed to pick out what you thought might relate to your submission. And the cost - phew! If you are interested in doing a degree, quite a number of universities do distance learning degrees now. If you don't need the piece of paper, you could also check out some of the free open courseware eg MIT or Sanford (not sure which British unis might do it). You get the lectures, the course assignments and all, you just don't get things marked by tutors and no certificate at the end. Alternatively, there are quite cheap short courses on Future Learn and other platforms if you're interested.

I would say, based on my limited experience, that they are v. good with regards their online setup and approach to distance learning. My Edinburgh online stuff is across about a dozen website and a bit janky in places, the OU has a v. good integrated online infrastructure. Also some courses are definitely better than others, but that is going to be true of any university.
