Yep.

I think the problem with "How Far I'll Go" is that it's really only half a song, the other half of the song being "Song of the Ancestors". It might be a problem that LMM hasn't figured out how to solve yet, given his experience in theatre. Compare with Robert Lopez, who did manage to solve the problem for "Let It Go".

I was thinking they won for a song in the South Park movie, but turns out they were only nominated. Phil Collins beat them with a Tarzan song, which probably explains why they made a whole episode attacking him (and also telling people that they shouldn't be so sensitive about ableism because a character in a wheelchair with a giant head who only says his own name is actually empowering for the disability community).

"Song of the Ancestors" is a reprise of "How Far I'll Go". Disney soundtracks use reprises all the time; Frozen did it with "For the First Time in Forever". It doesn't make the first track "half a song".

Oh I know it's a reprise; it's more a comment of how "How Far I'll Go" has the obligatory key change and crescendo build you'd expect from a Disney song, especially one angling for an Oscar, but ultimately doesn't do anything.

There's nothing wrong with going strictly formula when a) it works and b) it wins. I mean, hell, "My Heart Will Go On" has one of the most telegraphed key changes in musical history, but it's also one of the best.

Sarah McLachlan should've won the Oscar for "When She Loved Me" that year anyway. :colbert:

The past few days on the estranged parents board have given us a rich harvest.

quote:

Recently, my husband and I (remarriage- not their dad), went to visit my West Coast son after he had recently returned from deployment. While there, I went out to breakfast alone with my boy, both because I hadn’t had any time with him by myself, and because I wanted to talk to him about a sensitive issue. It’s this issue that was the catalyst for the resulting estrangement. There’s no way around it, I just have to say what the issue was: I meant to ask my son for financial help for a down payment for a home. I’m embarrassed now to admit this, although at the time that I brought it up, it didn’t seem so unreasonable. I had already had the same conversation with the East Coast son, and he seemed more than willing to help out, so I honestly didn’t know that my request would be so terribly upsetting to West Coast son. In fact, I didn’t even get the chance to talk to him about it… as soon as I started leading in to the subject, he reached in to his pocket, pulled out $30 in cash, dropped it on the table (we were at a cafe), and told me to have a good trip home. He walked away from me and left me sitting in the restaurant alone. We had all sorts of plans with his girlfriend and my husband for the remainder of the day, but, those plans never happened, because, except for a few scathing text messages in response to my pleas to let me apologize, I haven’t heard from him since.

My boys and I have always had a good relationship. In fact, judging from the emails between us during his deployment, West Coast son was looking forward to seeing me just as much as I was looking forward to seeing him, and I am just in disbelief that this one conversation (that wasn’t even a conversation because I barely got 2 sentences out about it) has caused him to never want to speak to me again.

It should be said that my husband and I are not broke- we’re both gainfully employed and would be considered solidly middle class- we just were under a time crunch to save for a down payment before our apartment lease was up, and we had fallen about $6000 short. We have never asked for any help before. I thought I could approach the subject playfully with my boys (who both have over $100,000 saved in the bank- some of which came from the college savings plans that my ex and I set up for them the day they were born and gave to them – with tax penalties for us- the day they left for the military) by making them an “offer they couldn’t refuse”- namely that they’d never have to worry about sending another gift for any holiday ever again- which is something I honestly thought they’d appreciate. Obviously, West Coast son did not appreciate the offer.
Playfully?

quote:

What am I missing here? West coast son could have just said, “no.” Throwing money on the table and walking out and leaving his own mother i a public restaurant is absolutely atrocious behavior!

My son did this to me. After going above and beyond my means to make Christmas in his own place special, I realized that he didn’t even think to give me a card. While in a restaurant eating Christmas eve dinner, I began crying and told him that I was hurt because of what he did. Instead of comforting me, he became enraged! He whipped out his credit card, paid the bill, then told me, “Get your sh*tt and I want you out of my apartment!” He walked out and left me sitting there crying. If I didn’t shell out a few thousand to clear up his credit report, he wouldn’t have that card.

After finding my way back to his apartment, I stood outside his door listening to him on the phone accusing me of flipping out on him in public and I told him that he was the worst son in the whole world. He played big man standing up to his mom for trashing his new girlfriend. I helped him prepare for her visit and had no reason to bad mouth her. He played that girl for a fool.

I was stunned at his ability to fly into such a rage, play the victim and fabricate false accusations against me. It was my responsibility to stand up for myself and teach my son that it is wrong to be so inconsiderate and thoughtless of his mother! Like a stupid fool, I ended up apologizing to him. He never expressed remorse for his abhorrent behavior.

And this emo poo poo:

quote:

Daughter: You have cancer.
Mom: What kind? Where is it?
Daughter: I can’t tell you.
Mom: Is there something I can do? Is there a treatment or medication?
Daughter: I can’t provide you with that information.
Mom: How long do I have to live? Weeks, months or years?
Daughter: I won’t tell you, find out on your own.
Mom: So, I really am dying?
Daughter: Yeah, you are already dead to me.

STRAIGHT TROPIN'

help, i last did lsd 2 weeks ago but i got this imagination social idea thats hard 2 explain. wanna know wat u think. maybe its just a fantasy but still a cool idea

i always noticed humans talk 2 each other 4 fun. i never did it tho. ive had jobs but i never recreationaly talked 2 any1. they only talked 2 me if they need me 2 do a job. now i take college classes and notice every1 talkin ALL THE TIME. like, classmates talkin b4 class. students walkin between classes in groups and talkin. its kinda hard 4 me to understand wats going on, like... r u supposed 2 talk 2 peers like that?

so, um, lsd use started 2 make my vision permanently cartoonish, sharp and saturated, candy-like, even tho i havent done it in 2 weeks. i looked around a classroom and took a visual step back, took in the entire field of vision, and noticed that it looks like a candy rainbow world. rainbow of cute colorful humans, colors of hair and clothes. so i wonder if peers talk 2 other peers cuz its like a human playground of cute colorful humans, fun and happy. like, the equivalent of putting a cat in a yarn store. a human sees this rainbow of cute humans and wants to play, humans are hypersocial so a room of same-aged humans is like a candy store for them. its kinda a childlike vision. but im still scared to try it out. this is important b/c i keep hearing ppl say you need people skills and teamwork to get a job after graduation.

Like, seriously. A slightly misguided/misinformed friend of mine linked me this incredibly stupid zerohedge article the other day and I had to explain to him, quote by quote, why, actually, literally all of those are good things (or just taken straight out of context, like the rails "across oceans" one actually being about just the US) and that the article's horrible writer had no loving idea what he was talking about, he just presented them as bad so you would immediately think "that's bad!".

Worst part is, I'm trans and this was while he was actively talking poo poo on everything AOC has done to further protection of trans people.
