I'm genuinely serious when I say that, the first time I saw this image, I thought it was some kind of parody of overly busy games with too much visual/UI overload.

Like Artifact BattleBorn fell into trap of being impossible for the average viewer to tell what the heck was going on. They also both were tried and failed to compete with blizzard games in the same genre that had a lower barrier to entry.

As one of the 12 people that bought Battleborn, the game was...decent.
Some brain genius decided to launch it at the same time as Overwatch though, and there was negative advertising for it.
I only knew it existed the day it came out, and got it cause I was in need of something new to play.

Lasted for like a month.

Cool things happened a long time ago and now you are doing somewhat menial tasks to rebuild the reputation of a group that failed to stop an evil empire in a battle much more epic than any you will get to fight.
I think that's about it.

Once, Long Ago, back in The Good Times, there was an age of prosperity and hope undreamed of. When The Traveling Entity visited us, it gave us The Good poo poo. The Good poo poo propelled society and civilization forward immensely and we enjoyed The Good Times a lot. But then the Dark Thing came, and Annoyed The Traveling Entity to gently caress off and leave us. The Bad Times started and everything went tits up. Lots of people died and we are now space hobos edging out for survival. Random Nobody, it is now your Destiny to join The Group that will fight the Dark Thing in the name of helping us find The Traveling Entity and bring back The Good Times again!

So like Bioware, they used to be a good studio but then lost to greed and lack of vision, now they're a shadow of themselves but assume they can rebuild their rep with a shallow grindfest.
Also I guess they're in Australia, Canada

Skippy McPants

The single player story dies from lack of decent characters. Bioware's writing has never been anything special, but folks always latched on to their characters because even if they were cliché you got to spend a lot of time with them out in the world. If there was a cast of quirky randos you could take out on missions and banter with then I gauntree the game be viewed more favorably no matter how broke-rear end the mechanics.

And the tech allows for something like that. There are missions where you have NPC Javelins following your around but rather than let the PC have a classic Bioware style party for open world and contract missions they went all-in on Co-op.

I was at PAX East just before they both came out and Gearbox spent a shitton of money hyping the game there. Every entrant got a battleborn lanyard and their space was really big. They really thought they had a shot against Overwatch head to head.

What killed Battleborn was Overwatch. But is true that was a busy game with too much going. The animations where not smooth. Anyway it was a moba and the genre was already saturated so was destined to fail miserably or become the king. Then it failed. Everyone moved to Overwatch that was incredible smooth and fun and with a lot of potential.

The optimism is almost entirely based on Borderlands 2 still being one of the better loot shooters in 2019 despite coming out seven years ago. A modern Borderlands with no cutbacks would be a scary beast

However, I feel the same way as you, the skepticism is entirely justified. Pitchford is just a dickhead basically. He's actually fighting a legal battle right now where, among some other accusations, he allegedly left behind a USB stick in a restaurant containing child porn.

Pitchford shithead aside, this also only works if you willfully, desperately ignore literally anything gearbox has done in those 7 years. It's like pre-ordering anthem because the only thing you allow yourself to remember about Bioware is liking ME2 which is.... oh

There is no optimum build or correct way to play a class.

Skill, gear, weapons and gameplay style are all variables which differ player to player, squad to squad.

I love this aspect of anthem.

I guess that's why they avoided putting in a stats screen lol, everybody would have been able to see for themselves that the items and gear scaling made zero sense. It was funny when people defended this decision as "wow nerds, I don't need to do math" because evidently Bioware thought the same exact thing.

Fun facts: Age of Conan released with stats like strengh, int, wis... only after a month of release people figured out that these stats did.. nothing. I dont remember if the effect was less than 1% or literally nothing. People still had fun with the game. But lol about that. Funcom is the worst and best mmo developer.

Fact checking:
100 points in dex would get you +1 dps in a 87 dps weapon

+1 damage on a 87 DPS lvl 80 weapon = 87dps + 1dps = 88 dps : 88 dps / 87 dps = 1.01 DPS improvement so rufly, 100 dex or str for DPS purposes....though + damage does not work in PvP.

I hope it's good, but near-apocalyptic mil-spec doesn't really do it for me. What I liked conceptually about Anthem was seeing the ME3 multiplayer systems fleshed out into a full game, i.e. a focus on cool powers and sci-fi bullshit. And I guess Anthem is technically what I wanted, at the very base level, but it just ain't very good.

On the bright side, I tend to get hooked on loot focused games, playing way more than I should and spending more money than on micro-transactions than the game is really worth. At least Anthem is mediocre enough that I'll burn out on it right quick.

The patch broke one world mission. There's two new world events. The first is just killing a hundred monsters in specific zones for some cash shop gold, and includes a new world mission that doesn't appear to despawn properly? The mission is just standing in a circle except this time you're defending against brutes. The second apparently has something to do with scars but apart from that I have no idea
