Lucas found the making of Star Wars to be a really draining and exhausting experience, which scared him off directing for a long time. He had creative oversight on the next two Star Wars movies but liked letting someone else be in the chair for the entire shooting day, and I imagine Willow was similar. (Especially with it being an effects heavy picture.)

Is there a specific sheet made for putting over the camera & camera person to hide their reflection in a teapot or whatever or do they just like throw a moving blanket over them? Also is there a term for the blanket when they do it?

Wouldn't work super well on chrome (depending) but works well for transparent reflective surfaces like a shop window.

There's an adjustable lens mounted polarizing filter for reducing overall reflections I'd imagine it's usually CG erasing these days.

In addition to what the other poster said, Lucas had a falling out with the DGA. He supposedly pretty much directed "ROTJ", too, but didn't receive credit. Maybe he was content to do as much directing as possible without being the official director?

Here’s a question that’s been building over the last few months of watching a lot of newer movies (2016-2019) and have started noticing a camera effect appearing with a lot more frequency: The Last Jedi did it once or twice (I want to say during those long force/telepathy tunnel conversations s between Ren and Rey) and I saw it again the other night in Kong Skull Island (when a character was coming around a corner and the depth of field increases to focus on an item in the background). The primary visible aspect for me is a clear warping of the dimensions of the frame’s contents, heads flatten slightly (or appear so as the focus shifts). I don’t dislike it, but it just really stands out to me whenever it happens in a way that makes me stop and notice. Would like to know what that is I guess. New lenses being used? A focusing technique that for whatever reason is seeing a lot of use? Depth of field seems to be where it’s happening but I’m not quite there in terminology or eyeballing these things.

Are you talking about the effect discussed here? https://www.reddit.com/r/videography/comments/4dbc53/why_does_the_video_seem_to_compress_during_focus/ It is because of the properties of anamorphic lenses, which were definitely used in Skull Island

If you mean stuff curving and compressing around the edges of the frame? That's the nature of anamorphic lenses. (e: What they said.) Old as the hills. Here's a comparison. https://vimeo.com/222504711

Hmm my whole post doubled then deleted...oh well, shorter version: Looking at the scenes again (as well as the one posted above) makes me think my brain just reacts weird to really fast focus racking with an anamorphic lens. Instead of tracking the focus my brain just steps back and takes in the whole frame right as the dimensions warp and so it registers almost more as a cut than a change of focus. e: to clarify I find nothing wrong with it, I was just surprised to never have that sensation from it before to the point where I didn’t even compare it to other shots like it. My first dumb guess was that I was seeing some sort of digital correction of a racking shot. Peacoffee fucked around with this message at 05:48 on Mar 19, 2019 |

Gotcha. That's big ol' pro glass moving around. Bokeh (the appearance of out of focus light) comes out more ovular as it gets further from the focus point in anamorphic lenses, so a rack focus will give the out of focus element the appearance of a vertical stretch. edit: Here's a CG simulation I saw Googling where you can see stuff blurring out at a taller ratio: Not an expert so sorry if any of that's incorrect. Yep Anamorphic lenses. And if you're wondering *why* they have those unique weird ratio characteristics it's because the lens itself is oval. They're really fun lenses to shoot with and add a lot of cinematic-ness to shots. https://www.bhphotovideo.com/explora/video/features/anamorphic-lenses-key-widescreen-cinematic-imagery

Neat. Maybe I’m just seeing the technique being used by really nice new cameras. I was watching a lot of restored silent film prior to this, so maybe I just culture shocked myself. Thanks for indulging what has been a fairly indulgent question.

Thanks for indulging what has been a fairly indulgent question. Anamorphic lenses are actually very old and doesn't really have anything to do with new cameras. Often they're decades old lenses that are still used (and of course there are new ones)! You just usually see it in a certain breed of directors/DP (generally the Spielberg type). They ain't cheap to buy or rent.

In Event Horizon, when Smith discovers the bomb that Dr. Weir planted on the Lewis and Clark, why didn't he just press the "disarm" button I was also noticing that the ship played on the crew members' fears. But some of them didn't seem to have any referenced, or I was wondering if someone could clarify: captain miller: left crewmember to die in fire dr. weir: wife committed suicide peters: something about her disabled son's legs? the other characters (Starck, Cooper, DJ, Justin) don't have anything mentioned. edit: some of them appear to be mentioned in this video (cooper was afraid of losing someone he personally cared about, DJ's fear was being dissected alive as a result of a childhood operation, hence his surgical scar on his chest), apparently a lot of the extra footage was lost. that sucks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sLu52bf-J5Q actionjackson fucked around with this message at 16:59 on Mar 25, 2019 |

That's because Event Horizon is a loving mess. It was hacked apart in editing to within an inch of its life so that likely has something to do with your specific issue. That flick seems to get a pass from folks for being a fun piece of space horror, but I couldn't help but feel like it was a huge missed opportunity of a film which would have been better under any more interesting director. Like, the vision of a hell dimension is some 90s music video shots of some people with streaks of blood on their faces? Such creativity! I get that they probably had much more gruesome imagery that they couldn't show, but the lack of imagination is what gets me, not the lack of gore. e: though I felt the same about Nightmare on Elm street so feel free to ignore my opinion. If you have a perfect setup for some surreal imagery, don't waste my drat time with a couple half-assed setpieces. But at least Nightmare on Elm Street is a solid movie outside of that. feedmyleg fucked around with this message at 23:21 on Mar 25, 2019 |

They built an entire room-sized gimble and screwed down appliances to make the spinning room (like Breakin' 2: Electric Boogaloo would do a few years later), and this was just an upside-down room with a hole they dumped blood through with the footage played backwards. The "freddy presses through the wall" was literally Robert Englund on a stepladder and some cheesecloth.
