But really, Italy is colonizing Libya again. Their army is there, the Italians are often in very important roles in delegations of foreign powers in Libya, they are attempting to shape the economy, inviting Libyans to economics forums in Italy, inviting Libyans from the education sector to Italy to discuss the Libyan educational programme, Italy is determining the fate of Libyan migrants, the list goes on and on. Libya is still in a civil war that been largely ignored by the rest of the world for years, and though the US and France have been at the table for most of the major economic and military decisions, the rest of the West couldn’t care less and have pretty much deligated to Italy the task of nation building in the part of Libya that is allied with the West. The argument is that the countries have historic ties (because of colonialism), and it seems to be to be pretty obvious make new-colonialism on Italy’s part. Not surprisingly this never pops up in the media and you won’t see a word about it unless you look for it.

cool dance moves posted:Italy got owned to hell and back the first time they invaded Ethiopia in the 1890s. When they tried again in the 1930s they bombed and gassed their way to victory We still have streets and squares dedicated to battles and commanders of the Italo-Ethiopian war Recently, I learned that liberal hero and legendary journalist Indro Montanelli took advantage of his assignment as a war correspondent in Ethiopia to buy himself a sex slave (underage, of course - either 12 or 14). There's a famous photo of a colonial dipshit, complete with pith helmet and cigarette hanging from his mouth, holding a naked African girl by the arm, and I had seen it a dozen times but never knew the douchebag was Montanelli. I won't post it here because gently caress him, but I'll post him going "it's not like that, it's normal in Africa" on national TV to a completely unimpressed Elvira Banotti (Italo-Ethiopian journalist and second wave feminist) who replies "no, it's not normal, you all were colonial rapists": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xeYPBpDZRmI This year, on International Women's Day, activists threw a bucket of pink paint over a statue of Montanelli, to remind everyone that he had been a rapist and a colonialist and to stop blindly worshiping him as a "reasonable adult": It worked, because before their protest I had somehow never heard of the child bride story, despite him having never made much of a mystery of it. In order not to offend liberal sensibilities too much, they used water-soluble paint: cool dance moves posted:Italy does not have a good track record in colonial conquest At least we didn't bankrupt ourselves in the attempt and accept to be annexed by a former enemy for a bailout

The Forum Voor Democratie (FVD), which was previously a tiny unknown fringe party with only 2 out of 150 MPs in the lower house, was the biggest winner by far. They became the biggest party in the senate with 10 out of 75 seats. All the ruling parties lost bigly. The GroenLinks (Green Left) also doubled their representatives throughout the provinces making them 3rd out of the 14 national parties. The party that represents old , the one that represents animals, and the one that (actually pretty straight up represents Turkey) also made gains. Who are the FvD? The FvD are not the PVV, which is the party of Geert Wilders, the famous Dutch racist. They ended up being marginalized, and while they still exist, everyone has gotten used to the presence of Wilders and ignoring it. This is a new far right party. It is led by a man named Thierry Baudet (pronounced like “cherry bidet”). There are many contrasts between Wilders and Baudet. Thierry is young (35). Thierry is educated. Thierry is classy. He says poo poo in optimistic tones like, "We are taking control of the ship of state, and the rest of Europe is falling in line, soon we will steer the course of the fleet of European nations." Thierry is educated as a classical pianist. He says classical music has shaped his worldview above all else. He views atonal music, abstract art, and any other modern culture as a mistake. He thinks that everything that has happened in Europe since the French Revolution was a mistake. He says that we should go back to a culture with realist art, classical music, where a class of the elite steers the flow of things and determines what culture the peasants should enjoy. He has a PhD in law (which he barely managed to attain), and he likes to make himself seem smart by using lengthy and obscure Latin phrases in parliamentary debate, and also to coin his own terms based on ancient Greek: quote:For Baudet is convinced that his country is on the brink of disaster. He believes that Dutch political and intellectual elites harbor a pathological hatred of their own national culture. Fed by cultural Marxism, postcolonial guilt, victim culture, and political correctness, this oikophobia—Baudet’s fancy term for “fear of the home”—has sapped the country’s defense mechanisms, leaving it open to the invasion of non-Western values. These threats are embodied particularly in Muslim immigrants and refugees. Update: In most of the provinces his party is not part of the ruling coalition, often pulling out of negotiations themselves for no apparent reason. There is much resentment towards Baudet. Immediately after the elections there was a large ANTIFA protest in Amsterdam. Someone was recorded as chanting supposed death threats against him during the march. That is not taken lightly here because Pim Fortuyn, a populist leader in the 90's, and Theo van Gogh, anti-muslim filmmaker were both assassinated in the streets for their right wing beliefs in recent memory. The woman who did the chant was sentenced to 60 hours of community service following a police investigation. Anyway, in contrast to the PVV, the party of Geert Wilders, which was a right wing racist populist party focused on opposing immigration, this new party of Baudet (the FvD) is a racist right-wing populist party with an optimistic message of rebuilding Europe along the principles of the Renaissance, and it seems that a lot of people fell for it. Whenever I mention his name to anyone I know they immediately become incredibly pissed, and there is a lot of anger about this victory, but a victory for fascism it certainly was. This probably won't be the last you hear of him, unfortunately.

It depends in what circles you move I think. I personally know a couple of bidet voters Honestly in many cases I think it's people who are racist but don't consider themselves as such and therefore don't want to vote for Wilders (or do it secretly) and Baudet has this pseudointellectual image which legitimizes it in their mind. I think.

I know at least 1 person that voted for him (the father of my best friend) and this was a man that used to hire immigrants exactly because he thought they got treated unfairly. That's what at least 2 decades of Dutch media coddling misinformation and the right does to people.

My social circle is probably not very representative Indeed, I think what frightens me most about him is that while Wilders is more of a negative and repugnant trolling figure, Baudet comes off to many people as charismatic, young, handsome, energetic, intelligent, educated, and even optimistic. There are a few Dutch politicians who seem like some of these things to some people, but in general most of them don’t have many of these traits. So I’m a bit worried that he can become kind of an Obama for the far right, and people upset with the status quo for whatever reason, racist and otherwise. Even though he describes wanting to restore the ancien régime where he would be part of the aristocracy and most of his voters would become official 2nd class peasants, they don’t seem to mind because he paints that picture in bright colors.

Here is that English interview with Baudet I was looking for: https://www.weltwoche.ch/ausgaben/2019-13/artikel/edito-thierry-baudet-die-weltwoche-ausgabe-13-2019.html I would say it’s worth a read if you’re interested in learning about the European right because he is especially articulate in comparison to most other far right leaders I know of, and I won’t be surprised if many others steal his talking points. And I also find it frankly just kind of horrifying. quote:What exactly is wrong with immigration?
