Olympic Mathlete posted:Always take earplugs to gigs! If you enjoy music, protect your hearing so you can y'know, hear it later in life! I was gonna chime in with this a couple days ago. And as has been mentioned above, people run the risk of playing undistorted and non-ear fatiguing music more loudly than they perceive when compared to a bad mix or lovely speakers/headphones and that’s super dangerous for hearing health. And if you go to a lot of concerts, the cost of getting some high-end sonically transparent plugs is totally worth it in the face of losing the dynamic range to your hearing.

Yep, did this years ago but not until after I'd had a really scary experience where I was sure I'd caught permanent tinnitus. That Motörhead gig did sound perfectly fine if you put in the cheapo yellow foam earplugs that the venue handed out at the door. They remove about 80% of all treble... Anything you can find at the drugstore around 10$ or more should be fine, though, and if you want to go up range, the sky's the limit. My custom molded ones were quite dear. The selling point is that they are super comfy and won't ever fall out. You can find ones with equally "transparent" filters much cheaper (the "christmas tree" shaped ones, with several flanges).

I wore ear plugs to ministry and meshuggah around 2008 and my ears were ringing afterwards for a day or so. They brought their big tour PA into a pretty small venue and were about 2 hours late because they got delayed at the border so they skipped soundcheck.

Hope ya'll can help me. I bought a Samsung QE55Q9FN tv. I mostly use it to watch movies from Plex. The TV doesn't decode DTS like my 5 year old 500€ Samsung could though My plan is to buy Nvidia Shield 2017 which supports DTS, Dolby Atmos, HDR, 4K etc, connect it with HDMI to Sony HT-XF9000 soundbar which apparently also supports DTS, Dolby Atmos, 4k HDR etc (https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/sound-bars/ht-xf9000/specifications) and then connect soundbar to the TV. Would that work? I've no experience with this, my last setup was TV->3.5mm to Logitech speakers. EDIT: Actually i saw this receiver: https://www.pioneer-audiovisual.eu/eu/products/vsx-932, would this work well instead of a soundbar if paired with some not too expensive speakers? Your TV supports Dolby Digital Plus so it should work with the sound bar and receiver you've linked. Be aware that if you go the receiver route, you'll also need to plunk down a decent chunk of change for a set of speakers to take advantage of the surround sound. The sound bar will work out of the box and if you aren't concerned with discreet surround sound imagining then it is most definitely the way to go.

If i connect them Shield->Soundbar->TV, does it matter what audio TV supports, no audio will be going to it if i understand correctly. Or do you mean ARC (TV->Soundbar)?

I meant support as in the TV documentation indicates that the TV is capable of decoding DDP on it's own without a separate decoder. TV>Sound bar should work. The Shield would not be necessary unless there is a 3rd party app you don't otherwise have access to via the TV itself.

Yeah, it supports Dolby Digital, the issue is DTS

I have home theater questions and it looks like this might be the best thread to ask them in. I'm currently using the Denon AVRS530BT 5.2 Receiver. I got suckered by the advertising "maximum of 140 watts per Channel" but in reality when using the full 5 speakers for surround sound, it is more like 45W :-( My setup is the Denon receiver with three Ascend SIERRA-1 speakers in front: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/SRM1/srm1.html Two Ascend CBM-170 for surround speakers, no sub. I've been turning the receiver up to 65-70 (out of max 100) for most movies, and that hasn't been particularly loud. The Denon has all of the features I want, but the speakers would do much better with 100-150W per channel. What would be the most cost effective way to get that? e: right now woot.com has a Onkyo TX-RZ820 for $449.99, rated 130 W/Ch. But is that another fake rating?

I'm not sure where you got those Denon numbers from because they don't match the specs at all. The Onkyo only does that power with 2 channels driven (stereo). It will be less in surround. The only way to get 130w out of every channel in 5.0 is to buy multiple power amplifiers (probably 3 stereo amps) and connect them to a preamp. But that's some serious overkill. Edit: I've never heard of those speakers, but that website is setting off my "audiophile bullshit" detector something fierce. At least they have some specs (although no frequency response chart) and based on those specs those are some seriously hard to drive speakers. 86dB @ 1w/m with 8 ohm nominal impedance is gonna be quiet, yeah. You're probably better off with bigger, more efficient speakers. And you're gonna need a sub if you really want to watch movies. Bookshelves ain't gonna cut it, no matter what the marketing says. TL;DR: You're better off spending your money on some new speakers and a sub if you want loud. KillHour fucked around with this message at 04:22 on Dec 6, 2018 |

Rinaldi posted:I have a future AV set-up in the works. We have a partially finished basement and are considering turning one of the unfinished rooms into a theater. I've budgeted for the remodel but haven't started talking to any contractors yet. We initially were thinking it'd be a fun long-term DIY project but seeing as how we don't have any experience in framing, drywalling, etc and that we want it to actually not look like garbage, we decided to leave some of that up to professionals. So, I'm hoping to get some advice; Update: We finished it! Aside from having an electrician take down the old fluorescent lights and add outlets, we did the entire thing ourselves. We didn't frame anything, just used heavy curtains bought from amazon. Concrete ceiling and cinder block walls, so I used a hammer drill and concrete anchors for the curtain rod holders. We got a few matching rugs on sale from Wayfair about the width of the room and laid them out over the original carpet. I was worried about the acoustics but it sounds good to me with no more echoes. Projector: Sony VPL HW-45ES. Went with a good 1080p projector since 4k speakers are pretty expensive right now. Speakers: ELAC Debut series, 5.1, 6" models. Receiver: Yamaha RX-V 685 Screen: 110" Silver Ticket screen from Amazon Lights: A 70' dimmable LED strip light kit from e-conolight. Pictures taken with lights on max. Room is pitch black with the lights off. Sofa: modular sofa from Costco. We're missing furniture to put the speakers on (the center channel is sitting on a covered-up cardboard box and the rear speakers are on $8 TV trays from target) but we'll sort that out later. The receiver is on the other side of one of the walls in a storage room with the wires run through a drilled hole in the cinderblock. I set up a logitech harmony hub in that room with an IR blaster run through the hole to control the projector. The receiver is also sitting on the box it came in but no one can see it so there's no rush for me to build a proper equipment shelf right away. We're really happy with the way it turned out!

They just broke ground on our house. I had them make one of the bedrooms 6 feet longer for a small theater 12x18 with a 10 foot ceiling. Was going to get a small wall mount rack for the equipment closet that will house the A/V equipment for the theater and the networking equipment for the house. Stumbled on a Facebook Marketplace ad for a Middle Atlantic slide out 37u rack for $150. Turned out to be a 42u. In good shape once I clean it up. It was a steal! These things are $1900. Overkill but rather too big than too small.

My living room has gone through a lot of changes since I made this post in here a couple of years ago I've gone from this To this 65" LG B7A OLED KEF R300 Onkyo TX-NR737 Polk PSW505 I used to have my KEFs in a dedicated stereo room with MiniDSP DDRC-24 with Dirac Live, but my listening room is gone now since we had a baby and that room is now a guest bedroom. For the backend, for movies and TV shows I have a Synology DS1618+ set up with Plex, Sonarr and Radarr. For music I have a Sonos Connect plugged into the Onkyo, which pulls music over SMB from my NAS for my local library, and Google Play Music for streaming. I hung a tv above a fireplace. Come at me. TCL65r617, Andrew Jones L+R, matching center going above as soon as I decide how to build a wall shelf. Polk OWM3s in the rear because they fit nicely. There’s wire in the ceiling for Atmos someday. I’d like to upgrade my old Pioneer VSX-9040 receiver, but right now the TV is my only 4K source so I don’t see the point when I’m just using hdmi audio-return.
