The official account of NFL Tackle Phil Loadholt.

Let's talk Football.

Now I'm not exactly a company man as one can imagine, but I wouldn't be shocked if they kind of do a split show for Fox. I imagine they'll still have a couple guys in studio in LA (maybe Robert Smith and Wannstedt) while the new crew goes to some game. Internally I'm sure it's obvious they won't dethrone ESPN College Gameday which is an institution and Meyer is a loving turd, but I think this helps clearly shore up the two elements that Fox has for their college game day stuff. Urban Meyer will talk about the Big 10 and getting Bush to go with Leinart makes some sense because Fox does air some Pac 12 games too. Genuinely interested to see how they approach this show because I know I'll likely just be in the studio all day anyways and wont' ever get to see how it operates. I believe does his NFL Network stuff in LA anyways which is down the street so its not exactly a big ask...unless I guess he's going on the road.

So now you need to have an ESPN+ subscription to be able to buy their PPVs? Or is it just through ESPN's launcher?

It's amazing what they can do with computers these days.

Good to see streaming options are already acting like cable. In some ways it makes sense to keep a cheap option though and not force people to pay for MMA, but I see this sort of payment option creeping into everything.

Cable/Satellite TV PPV providers take a huge cut and are notoriously hard to work with so I guess this sort of thing maybe was inevitable. If I"m paying that much for a PPV though getting a lower-than-cable quality product that also counts against my datacap seems rough. It's been a while since I've been very interested in MMA so I guess I'm not really part of the target audience but I can't imagine ever buying one now.

I was so confused because 1) UFC has their own streaming platform so what the hell and 2) Aren't they selling themselves short on pricing?

Then I realized they're basically charging you a door fee to buy their PPVs and I laughed.

According to the Wrestling Observer (good source for this) they had a 50/50 revenue split with the major PPV companies, and wanted a better split. InDemand was apparently willing to budge but DirecTV was not. So they're getting a better split with ESPN as well as just a flat dollar amount for each of them that apparently is enough to more than make up for the percentage of people who can't stream (20,000 people still buy WWE PPVs instead of streaming).

Given how much Endeavor shelled out for UFC, I can't imagine they'd even consider this unless it was a sound financial decision, even if it seems bizarre on the surface level.

It also gives them a ton of freedom now though. They could potentially offer a yearly pass at say $150 or $200 that gets you ESPN+ and all PPVs for a year or something like that. Not that they will, but if the data shows most people are only buying 2-3 shows per-year, they could do a pass at a price point that nets them more money overall and gets more people regularly invested in the programming.

There's zero flexibility when it comes to traditional carriers, so I think, in the long run, they're better off with this if it's handled properly. This also provides flexibility in the event of a big main event being scrapped due to bad weight cut or something. You're not tied down to trying to sell people a subpar PPV. You could decrease the price or move it to regular ESPN+ without much hassle.

This seems like an over pay to me. There are not really any marquee schools in the AAC and they aren’t even a good basketball conference anymore.

the UFC streaming platform's draw has been like random non-UFC MMA shows, preliminary prelims, and D-tier UFC cards

like before the ESPN deal, there were 4 UFC cards you could watch

1. the actual PPV
2. UFC on X
3. UFC Fight Night (was on FS1, now ESPN+)
4. UFC Fight Night on UFC Fightpass

price point appears to be about the same, a UFC PPV cost like $65, the ESPN+ subscription is $5/month and the PPV cost is $60

the major issue will be if people will adopt ESPN+ just so they can buy PPVs

UFC's PPV buyrates have been overall utter poo poo for the last 2 or 3 years, so this will be interesting. The only people they have left who really move the needle are Conor or Jon Jones.

Looks like ESPN+ has taken another soccer property from BeIn sports. It's not huge since it's a non-annual tournament, but that's yet another reason to not pay for whatever insane sports cable package your ISP is offering.

It launched in Europe with soccer, it was introduced a year later to Japan after gobbling up all the domestic soccer rights as well. I think boxing/MMA was their foot in for the US and I’d expect them to keep going once rights deals are up in the US. They already have NFL and college football in certain markets (I watched the Super Bowl on DAZN in Japan the last two years).
