I would say colloquially people use "bug" to refer to the broader category of tiny exoskeleton creatures, few are aware of the true Order of the Bug

I know around here they contribute negatively in a lot of little ways-- their poop is toxic to local flora, they over-aerate the soil in naturally loamy areas so floodplains lose too much topsoil and become barren, they're a food supply for a variety of mole that isn't strictly speaking invasive but really shouldn't be around in their current numbers, and they in turn destroy a lot of plants that are important to local ecologies
