Jet Jaguar posted:Just got back from this and it is amazingly amazing. There's so much stuff I've never seen elsewhere. Agreed. Saw it last night in IMAX and it was stunning. The film restoration is staggering, some of those shots look like they were from yesterday. One thing that never really sunk in for me was how quick the landing went. Something like 3 1/2 minutes from powered descent to touchdown. Neil's heart going 150BPM during the landing, holy poo poo.

Dickeye and I went through this with the Bomb the Music Industry! doc, and I'm currently going through it with the Jawbreaker doc. It's awful, because you constantly want to ask for an update from the filmaker(s), but you know they're trying and you don't want to be a pushy jackass. A long time ago, I wrote about watching Pornocracy (which I liked, despite it feeling somewhat half-finished). Someone recommended Jon Ronson's The Butterfly Effect podcast, which covers a lot of the same issues. Thanks - interesting to get a different take. It's weird to see that the enigmatic company behind most of the world's porn, Mindgeek, is also behind the age verification scheme that the UK government is planning to introduce. As is: Mindgeek films the porn, markets the porn, pirates the porn and now is becoming the gatekeeper? The plot thickens. On other matters, I'm getting tired of the usual crime documentary format: the moody music, sepia tones, the twists, the crew talking their way through a solution, the whole fly-on-the-wall see-how-we-made-this mode as beautifully satirized by American Vandal. I first noticed it in The Keepers, which didn't add up to much in the end except a whole lot of circumstantial evidence, finger-pointing and slice-of-life. Any recommendations about recent crime docos that don't do this? nonathlon fucked around with this message at 10:37 on Mar 13, 2019 |

There's something I don't like about how Dawson City: Frozen Time is structured, but it's very interesting .quote:It concerns the history of Dawson City, Canada, deep in the Yukon, from its creation during the Klondike Gold Rush culminating in the 1978 discovery of 533 silent film reels, thought to be lost, that had been buried in 1929 in a former swimming pool or hockey rink.[5][6] Along with the lost films, there was also rare footage of other historic events, including the 1919 World Series.[7] It's a fascinating watch and I would recommend it. Decasia is also very much worth your time if this sort of thing interests you. Dr.Caligari fucked around with this message at 00:25 on Mar 17, 2019 |

Yeah I don’t get why they didn’t just use the babysitters and just day drink, that’s the only real strange part of their behavior. It just makes more sense to assume they are dumbasses and someone took the kid rather than they drugged them and disappeared a body just so they could stay up drinking. Leaving that side door unlocked is just stupid beyond belief.

Hasn't been mentioned in a while but if you want to feel insanely bad for a trust fund white girl and also hate the terrible way cops are all over the world, watch Amanda Knox on Netflix. imo there is essentially literally no chance she did it and spent an insane amount of time in jail

I still can't believe they left their kids alone (3 and 1!) to go eat and drink when there was free babysitting services AND with the doors unlocked. Criminal negligence for sure and it still irritates me. I hate the whole story, the media frenzy, the dumb parents, the dumb police (didn't realise how dumb they were at the time, just thought it was tabloids being racist and them being insanely pissed they wouldn't release details like British police) and the fact that a blonde girl goes missing we better inform the world while thousands of other children are ignored. A huge clusterfuck Edit: yeah the Amanda Knox story is loving bonkers as well, definitely worth a watch Alan_Shore fucked around with this message at 02:37 on Mar 18, 2019 |

It may have been the Express (or the Sun) that had Madeleine McCann on the front cover every day for over a year. I don't know what happened to her, but the case is just full of strange behaviour and weird occurrences that point in all sorts of directions. Absent an actual body, it's not ever going to be solved. Watched both Free Solo and The Dawn Wall this week. I had heard about Free Solo and that guy a bunch before but I felt like it was just a narratively weak doc overall with a sort of wet fart payoff. It just felt like they didn't do a good job of the act 1 and 2 buildup and then the payoff was essentially too quick and "and then he did it the end." To contrast, The Dawn Wall, which I didn't know existed (the doc not el Capitan) was much much stronger to me. I loved it. The narrative was tighter, the suspense was tighter. It was just good and holy poo poo I had *no* idea any of that Kyrgyzstan poo poo happened. Blew me away. I can't imagine being in Tommy's shoes and having to do what he did. I'm also not convinced the guy survived... maybe I'm just a cynic. It seems like it was done to help Tommy get over it. Anyway, Free Solo wasn't a waste of time but the Dawn Wall was much better. edit: nevermind it looks like they actually visited the captor in prison so maybe it wasn't made up.
