Ames seems to have somewhat made his peace after the latest smear campaigns. He mentions Matt by name in conversation now, which he didn't used to do.

I don't know if there was some specific incident that pushed them apart, but from an outside perspective it seems unsurprising. Starting from more or less the same place in the 1990s, covering many of the same issues and using a very similar authorial voice, these two guys ended up have very divergent careers, with one achieving a lot of mainstream recognition and success while the other was semi-blacklisted from respectable journalism and relies heavily on a subscriber funded podcast. Combine that with two macho personalities and it seems like the bigger shock would be if they hadn't had some kind of falling out.

Somewhere I saw it was over the direction of the eXile, with Taibbi wanting more hard investigative stuff and Mark wanting to stay more gonzo. If that's true, "creative differences", yeah. I also heard a quote years ago (can't source it though) that Mark kinda insulted Matt about Matt's journalist dad/lineage, like a "oh yeah, go ahead and quit, go be the famous mainstream reporter you were always gonna turn out to be". Maybe a little jealousy & resentment mixed with the punk/DIY/gonzo justification. What bits I've heard made young-Mark probably the rear end in a top hat in that situation, but I always wondered why he was the guy that stayed plugged into other eXile reporters, and not Matt. What's really telling was their response to the gross attempts to smear them after #MeToo. Matt immediately prostrates himself and begs forgiveness, and Mark just flipped the bird. But yeah wish they'd hug it out, they both do incredible work.

Semi-related, I recall John casting shade in Matt’s direction once because his articles on Thomas Friedman were similar to earlier ones John had written. It might have been early on in the podcast.

they cooperated on their Russia book, so I’m not so sure they resent each other as much as this thread implies. Mark keeps in touch with other Exile contributors because their careers are still in the same place while Matt Taino is a big time essayist. Yasha Levine does practically nothing but investigative journalism.

the resentment (if it exists) goes both ways and would be justifiable

ames feeling of being betrayed and/or jealous of taibbi’s meteoric rise to Respectable Journalist after the exile days

taibbi having the albatross of the reality of the exile’s existence every 2 years as credulous morons ask if it’s true that bob saget matt taibbi raped and killed a girl in 1990; it effectively killed the tarfu report

that’s totally speculation without anything concrete to back it up, but they’re obviously not nearly as close as they once were even if the animosity might not be there

From that article Vanity Fair or someone did back in 2010/2011 where the journalist who went to interview Taibbi ended up having coffee thrown at his face, one of the things that broke down the relationship between Ames and Taibbi (and there probably isn't one thing, just growing antagonism with one another in a pretty crazy place) was that Ames went to the US for a couple of years to do research on his book about workplace shootings and left Taibbi running the eXile. Taibbi promptly got addicted to heroin, if he wasn't already, and from Ames point of view, ran it into the ground.

I think Ames tried to do Taibbi a solid when Mikey C spun up the same rape accusations against the two of them for their satire book when Ames both admitted that looking back they were pretty gross and that he, not Taibbi, wrote the worst parts in the eXile book. Not that that would satisfy people gunning for them already -- the WaPo let some journalist who had been slighted by the two back in the 90s because she ghoulishly gloated about the excess deaths in Russia re-litigate their wrongdoings as violent, virulent misogyny.

Are John Dolan's/Gary Brecher's articles from the old Exile days available anywhere that isn't behind a ridiculous paywall? They had a formative experience on young me and I'd love to read some of them again. I forget how I even found them to begin with, they felt more transgressive than pornography to the point that I never spoke to any other real world person about them.

Ames and Taibbi are both talking extensively about the failure of Russiagate (Ames for a few years now, Taibbi's writing that touches on the subject) to the point where I wonder if they really will have Taibbi on the show if things have been somewhat patched up.

Carl Zha's position is that the camps are bad and China has problems, but they're not nearly as bad as "they're torturing people with snakes" or "this is a new holocaust." The problem is literally that he's not critical enough. These "China watchers" are the same people who'd have you believe in the CCP organ wagons.
