Norton the First posted:So why did the Lib Dems think that the fixed term thing was a good idea? Like the internal logic, not just "lol Lib Dems"." They were afraid that Cameron would seek new elections as soon as conditions were in the Tories favour, giving him the opportunity to form a majority and dump the Lib Dems as coalition partners. FTPA meant he couldn't do that without a parliamentary approval, and the Lib Dems saw that as guaranteeing the coalition would last. Which it did, so congrats Nick!

technically the fixed term parliaments act has lots of rules which have to be followed to start a general election, but you only need a simple majority to repeal the act itself, then you’re back to how it used to be

This is a well-established rule in statute law, and words in the repealing Act reviving the 1715 Act could be used.

So the registered electorate in 2016 was about 46 million. The "Scrap Article 50" petition is now at 4.6 million signatures (and increasing all the time). Roughly 10% of the voting population seems like a pretty significant number.

Let me get this straight. No one likes May's deal. No one wants a no deal Brexit. No one wants to stay in the EU. So the solution is to... force her to resign so they don't get her deal and crash out with no deal?
