I think they were more referring to the staying power that the xeno has had and the success over more than just one or two films. These days you really don't see creatures attain that iconic status where they become the main draw of an ongoing series. Alien is basically a slasher in space so the xeno is like the Jason of the Alien franchise, and it's pretty unique in that way. The Jaws series is another example but obviously a great white shark isn't as interesting and creative as the xeno was, which is one reason why every Jaws sequel is trash.

Horror genre is hard, they don’t typically make that much money and they usually have tiny budgets. Hence why they leaned into action more as the sequels came out. I’m so desensitized anymore I don’t know what would actually make a good horror movie with Aliens. Maybe trying to turn it into more torture porn but that’s kinda it’s own thing.

There have been plenty of successful slasher villains since Alien came out in 1979 but they're people. Creatures are much harder to come by. Critters had a nice little run there with multiple sequels but obviously nothing like the huge mainstream success of the xeno. Maybe the closest thing we have to the xeno is the velociraptors from the Jurassic Park franchise.

The whole conjuring series is one big ol thing. Same with Annabelle. Maybe the crooked man. I don’t know.

Also I’ll confirm that Life is the closest thing we have to Alien, and is also really good

I'd say the Red Face Demon is more iconic out of the whole Wan-verse.

Life was ok, retreaded too much ground better films already had and was poorly written with characters basically offing themselves because everyone wanted to make stupid decisions. Glad the ending was bleak as hell even if you could see it coming from a mile away.

Actually Scott just wanted to make a generic Alien movie and the only reason Prometheus was different was because studio execs told him to add new creatures and do something fresh. If the studio hadn't stepped in and instead let Scott make what he wanted to it would have been even worse because he had nothing, just a sense of entitlement regarding ownership of the franchise that he wanted to try and reclaim. The trilobite is an example of the studio telling Scott to be creative because they thought the xeno was cooked.

Weird thoughts.

Scott was the one who ended up seeking out Damon Lindelof to review and then work to revise Jon Spaihts' original script because he (and the other producers of the film agreed) it was too much of a retread of previous films, with too much focus on the alien. Scott himself did not personally write anything. He works with screenwriters to develop and workshop ideas, which is what most directors at his level do.

You have invented this whole spurious narrative in your head because you didn't like a movie. You should ask yourself why that is.

NEWT REBORN
Iconic slashers are a specific cultural phenomenon from around the 1980s, just like Sam Spade and Mike Hammer are among the iconic noir detectives of the 1940s.

And then: iconic of what? The Alien alien is an iconic image of an astronaut twisted by Space Madness into literally a different species. It’s an image with a very narrow range of applications.

That’s why “iconic” is not always the goal. Prometheus, Covenant, Last Days On Mars, Europa Report, etc. (plus Earth-set films like Splinter, The Thing 2011, The Ruins, Chernobyl Diaries...) deal largely in abstract threats like nanomachines, fungal spores - even radiation. Even when the threat takes on a specific form and characterization, as in movies like Life and Kill Command, it’s more abstract - non-anthropomorphic.

Where you do get that relative anthropomorphism nowadays is in Kaiju films, like the MUTO in Godzilla 2014.

David Twohy, creator of Riddick, wrote one of the script drafts for Alien3 and actively solicited FOX to let him make an AvP movie prior to the Anderson movie being made. ‘The Chronicles of Riddick’s prison bit cribs some stuff from his Alien3 draft, as well.

This is the one I personally had:

Aliens: Labyrinth https://www.amazon.com/dp/1569711100/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_OVfLCbBP6E0Q8

It’s got the Backsplash prequel as well.

The old 90s stuff hasn’t been reprinted in a while, the most recent compilation that has it is this:

Aliens Omnibus Volume 3 (v. 3) https://www.amazon.com/dp/1593078722/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_RYfLCbAFY13RV

This seller on eBay is offering, uh, 10 copies of the trade paperback for about $24 shipped, I’m almost tempted to buy up the lot and then offer them up to goons for the price of shipping or something:

https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F232132147597

If you’re okay with digital comics, it looks like Dark Horse offers a digital version but I’m not sure if it includes Backsplash.

The omnibus I linked does, yes.

The one you linked is the novelization of the comic, by S.D. Perry. It'll get the job done if you can't get ahold of the comic, but I much prefer the comic over the novel. The novel changes up the pacing and the order of events a bit, and you obviously miss out on the awesome artwork of the comic.

Oh, yeah, the bulk of the 90s comics got "novelizations" of varying quality; there weren't even any real "original" Aliens novels until years later. The novelizations generally expanded on the plots and characters of their comic counterparts since they didn't have the page limitations that a comic book has, and occasionally resolved some plot holes or retconned things.

Edit--

This page has a list of what each volume contains.

As for which ones are worth it? It kind of depends on what you're looking for, and what your threshold for silly/stupid is.
I'd say Vol 3 is very worth it (the most "schlock" story in the volume is arguably "Rogue", but it's still fun; everything else is worthwhile).
Volumes 2 and 4 are chock full 'o dumb, but hey that might be your thing. "Colonial Marines" is an especially wild trainwreck, but it's a trainwreck that it's hard to look away from once you get started. The ending "twist" doesn't make sense if you haven't read "Rogue", though.
Volumes 5 and 6 are pretty much everything else, including almost all of the one-shots and short stories. The stories are of varying quality, but there's definitely more good than bad. Standouts in vol 5 include "Survival", "Alien", "Incubation", and "Alchemy", standouts in vol 6 include "Apocalypse", "45 Seconds", "Elder Gods", "Glass Corridor", and "Stalker".
