I was going to buy some pullets to replace the silkies, but since we adopted a bunny, I don't have the room or time to keep pullets from killing themselves this year. My 7 remaining hens are laying well right now.

:psyduck: I pulled 11 eggs today and almost all of them were white. That's a first. In the past two days I've gotten 21 eggs. They go nuts when I clean out the fridge.

They're gonna go even more wild when I throw some deer leg bones in there tomorrow.

Also everybody says appenzellers are wild rear end in a top hat chickens. Mine come right up to me and beg for treats.

Cam was having wind issues today, it blew up his tail and made him look like a big ol' flower...


Then he got it together and faced INTO the wind...


And eventually went out walking with Tater Tot. He listened very attentively to everything she said.

Apparantly in our flock it's a thing for the boys to prepare for the Chicken Endtimes. I approve since all those spurs apparantly came into play a few months back when the neighbor's dogs got into our yard and killed/maimed abunch of our chickens. Go to it, boys.

Since the shed spur fit like a cap over what was left on the shank, after Phoenix shed this one and it's mate he still had spurs about 3 inches long.

Cam and Tater Tot *are* having a bit of a romance right now, he escorts her around the yard while she keeps up a running commentary. Spring looks like it is finally arriving and everyone is getting twitterpated.
Tomorrow I start setting aside eggs to go into the ReptiPro on Saturday, Chickam is in 3 weeks! :derp:

What's the actual start date VS? I'm a preschool teacher and we start back after easter on the 24th April, will the eggs all have hatched by then? I'm going to suggest we run the stream for the kids to watch but it'd be great if they could see some hatching too.

Pickle is the first and only broody hen we have right now--winter won't piss off and go away so everything is late this year. The ReptiPro has been running for a day and is purring along just fine, I've been setting aside candidate eggs from our hens (no mail order eggs this year) for two days. Twelve to sixteen eggs will go into the ReptiPro tomorrow--Saturday, March 30th at 12 noon. Hatch *should* be April 20th...but bantam eggs like to hatch 2 days early, so I suggest checking the Chickam YouTube channel starting on the 18th.

I'll candle the eggs at ten days and update embryo count/hatch beginning announcements here and on our Chickam Twitter account. When the hatch begins I'll start the usual Chickam thread in GBS (since that's where I've always posted it) and will post a link to to the new GBS thread here. We'll likely only run one hatch this year.

I'm sure we'll get all kinds of 420/Weed name suggestions...

Well. drat. My order from the hatchery came half dead and the rest of the chicks dropped throughout the day. They're nice enough to replace but it always blows when you get a bunch of dead chicks in a box.

There's a certain brand of feed I had to quit using that is too dusty for my birds, it caused them to cough sometimes...check to make sure your chicken food isn't too powdery. And every so often a chicken will just have something go down the wrong way and they do that for a bit. My dumb hens tend to do this when getting a drink every so often. If your birds are otherwise healthy I'd just keep an eye on it.

Welp, it's been 10 days, egg candling time! :derp:
Out of 28 eggs set, 6 duds were removed (5 infertile, 1 bad egg), 3 I'm unsure of because of dark shells so they will remain in the incubator...and 19 eggs have embryos! The 19 are a mix of standard/Bantam and various colors. 11 days to go! :neckbeard:

Gonna go have a talk with whoever is laying the huge white eggs and is holding off the rooboys, two of the infertile ones were hers...

Woke up this morning to find out that the chickens had taken up station at every door and window on the back of the house and were waiting for me.

Also found out that one of my cats has been sampling the chicken food when she goes out back. What the gently caress, cat.

My dog has decided she likes chicken food so keeps breaking into the run to eat it. The chickens are delighted because this frees them to escape and dig up the garden.

I was filling up the chicken feeder yesterday and my house rabbit ran up and started munching on it. I was scooping the feed into the feeder with an old kid's Halloween bucket I keep around.

I took the feeder away, so he knocked the bucket over and crawled inside it

My eggs go into the incubator THIS SATURDAY! I can't believe it...it's so soon!

I'm hatching a real mix of birds courtesy my coworker and courtesy Fluffy Bunnies. I have no idea what my flock will end up containing, beyond some basics. I'm really looking forward to it!

Welp, the eggs went into lockdown today 5 hours ago, the hatch is due on 4/20 and I just checked them...

And OF COURSE one of the banty eggs has pipped. #28, the smallest egg in there...I had a feeling. Three days early, I poo poo you not.

It's that little white bastard out in front in the middle (I KNEW), right behind the big brown #6 and big green #14. Yay for high altitude hatching...*sigh*. If anything happens, we'll start the cam...hopefully the little stinker will wait, tho.

You know, generally you're supposed to hide eggs for your kid to find during Easter, not keep them all in one place.
