I've been reading it since it came out. The story is very interesting, but the art is where it really excels. I'd recommend it.

Mr Hootington posted:Crossed is not good. Quite an understatement. I will say Simon Spurrier did write some good stuff for that line, namely Wish You Were Here, but most of the other works are either bad or gross. Or both. Even that book is not for the faint of heart though. Big fans of zombie fiction and slasher movies might have less issues with the subject matter. wielder fucked around with this message at 16:00 on Mar 28, 2019 |

I had never read anything Crossed before, and I tapped out before that story arch finished. I'm sure that killed anyone's interest in that series in record time.

Genuinely a stupendous "silk purse from sow's ear" type situation. Only the first six issues, though. Spurrier follows on from Moore's incredible mini-series with a continuation that's a lot more hackneyed, boring, etc. Also, Kieron Gillen wrote a really good Crossed story in the anthology book (yes, Crossed is perplexingly popular enough that it had an anthology title that ran for 100 issues). The franchise is mostly horrendous, but there's a surprising amount of talent on display in some of its off-shoots.

I haven't read what Alan Moore wrote for it, but I guess that would be expected of him too. You can find some good to great creators in the weirdest places. Like, say, Jonathan Hickman on God is Dead. That was a thing too. Jedit posted:The subject matter of Crossed isn't zombie movies, it's rape. Probably because I haven't thought of this in what feels like years. Which was for the best.

Hickman started God is Dead; there might've been more to it than him just wanting some easy cash. Moore did a story in one of the God is Dead specials, too. That whole book was loving weird and all over the place (and pretty much pornography in various places, which was groan-worthy). But anyway incongruous Moore involvement has a fine pedigree; he wrote for Youngblood.

Ennis has three great loves and two great hates. The former are America, war comics, and tales of sexual misadventure. The latter are superheroes and Irish sectarianism. These things inform all his work. Crossed is the only one where he's really writing out the nasty, though.

Horror, suspense, and mystery writers, in my experience, tend to be really nice people in person. It's similar to how Stephen King, despite his bibilography, is an elderly dork who was in a rock band with Dave Barry and Amy Tan for years. All the darkness goes into the work.

Not to take away from that, but wasn’t he on so much coke during the 80s that he, by his own admission, does not even remember writing most of his works during that time? Though to be fair, everyone was on cocaine those days.

On the one hand, pretty much everything he wrote from 1980 through 1987 makes a lot more sense to me now that I know he was doing a lot of coke at the time. It and Tommyknockers in particular are big old cocaine ideas. On the other, it's not like he got less weird after he sobered up. He just got somewhat more concise.

Gaz-L posted:BSS as a whole seems to 'ironically' love Scioli's work on those books and I don't get it. Late chime-in to say I unironically love him too. I think overall it's rare to get truly top quality writing & art from the same source. Usually one of the two lacks behind the other. In the case of Scioli, I do think his writing is weaker than his art. I think with this Go Bots title specifically, the observation that it almost appears to be fanfic probably isn't far off. That said, I think that's kinda the appeal. It's not targeting mainstream readers. The book feels like it could have been something someone was sketching in the back of their highschool notebook. It feels indie as hell. The colored pencil style art really leans into that and is done in raw sort of way that you don't get from Marvel or DC or even really Image titles anymore. I'm not a Transformers guy, nor did I really know much of anything about Go Bots prior other than it's a weird knock-off but somehow tie-in world. I just love the idea of the tagline for the series about the Asimov code going out the window and robots being able to harm their masters. Aside from Go Bots, my favorite recent indie read was Magical Beatdown #1 and #2. Sailor Moon if it was done by Quentin Tarantino. Yeah my love for Scioli is entirely his art. His writing does little for me (but his plotting is good because he’s all about bombastic comics and I love that). I’m a weirdo who also likes Frank Miller’s recent stuff though so who knows. Maybe I just like bad art.

I'll read a hundred books by Scioli over any more by Jim Lee. His art was perfect for gobots, especially as a counterpoint to IDW's transformers stuff. Sketchy, scratchy and nowhere near the clean and polished look of the competitor.

Hobo Grandpa posted:Late chime-in to say I unironically love him too. I was the biggest Transformers and GI Joe fan, being the perfect age at their '80s peaks. I collected the toys, watched the cartoons, and at one point owned every single issue of both Marvel series, including any related miniseries and tie-in issues. And I loved how Scioli (and co-writer John Barber) threw all those mythologies into a blender, salvaged what worked, and followed their own paths for the rest. I'm not sure how much credit Barber deserves, since Scioli was definitely the star. I wonder if he was kind of like Mark Frost on Twin Peaks, reigning in some of David Lynch's most inaccessible ideas and strangest impulses to emerge with more of a standard narrative. And I haven't read Go-Bots yet, so I don't know if pure, unfiltered Scioli will be better or worse.
