Back to Peter Tagtgren again, I really enjoyed hearing Hypocrisy's worst album in that context—the songs are hot garbage in the studio but a lot of fun when you're shitfaced around a bunch of other sweaty dudes in oversized black t-shirts

I've somehow seen Watain like... four times, I think. I don't really like them, they're fine and their live show is pretty good but they're pretty eh. They tend to tour with bands I do want to see though, like Tribulation, In Solitude, Revenge (or was it Conqueror?), and Destroyer 666.

Yeah deathcore slaps. But not the new Whitechapel, it's dogshit.

Fun story edit: I've seen exactly 1 dxc band live, even though I've heard hundreds and hundreds of albums from the genre. It was at a combined gig where Arsis and a touring band were at a venue that double booked a soccer event at the same time as the concert (where I'm going tonight), so Arsis and the other band just got added on to a touring sludge band with 2 local death metal bands opening and the dxc band in question at our other metal friendly venue.
The dxc kids were noticibly panicing before the show started and I figured out it was because the drummer didn't have his pedals. A car comes screeching up with the girlfriends of the band, pedals in hand. They rush up on stage, announce themselves and start playing their first song. Everyone in the audience is getting drinks, relaxing and hanging out, the only people by the stage were the girlfriends. I was into it but I wasn't about to be literally the only not-girlfriend by the stage so I enjoyed my beer at a table. In the middle of song 2, the bass player walked off. End of song 2, the guitarists threw down their guitars and the singer yelled "gently caress THIS" and spiked the mic. The drummer just starts in on this awful fill that goes on for 30 seconds while the house music slowly gets cranked up to drown him out.
Come to find out from one of the local DM bands I know, the dxc band were supposed to play second or third that night and my buddy's band was supposed to be first. But their new drummer was ALSO the drummer in the other local DM band, so for simplicities sake they just put the dxc band first and the two DM bands back to back so he didn't need to tear down his kit. So we got high and laughed at the mad deathcore kids, and I bought their demo later on bandcamp because I felt kinda bad.

tl;dr: seen 1 dxc band live, they ragequit the show after a song and a half

Yeah, theres some good tunes here and there. The band is more of an art project looking back on things - they put so much effort into just about every video and their stage show (from what I hear) is insane. I missed em last time they came here but if they come to North America again I don't wanna miss it.

Flake, the keyboardist, was once interviewed about performing the song Mein Teil live, where he sits in a giant metal pot and gets cooked alive with a massive flamethrower. His quote verbatim was "It is fine. It is only pain. Although one can not breathe in, because then one would inhale the flames and die." They're really strict in the most bizarre and entertaining way about making their shows as real as possible. This is the same guy who also walks on a treadmill for almost the entire show at his keyboard station for no reason.

New Rammstein is good. It's definitely more of their same, but it doesn't sound like ten years has stopped them all that much. I eagerly await the full record.

Devin's taken me a few tries. It's good with some great hooks in there, but I'm not sure where it falls. The length of some of the songs and really awesome riffs that don't last as long as I would like make it kind of hard to figure out where it would go on my playlist. That said, I also like a lot of the DTP stuff, so take my opinion for what you wish. All of his albums kind of have their own feel that strike me at different points in my life or headspace, whether it's intense SYL stuff or more "generic" friendly stuff like the DTP albums. I'm sure this one will hit me when I need it to, as well.

Of all the Devin Townsend albums, it is the Devin Townsendiest. It's like everything he's ever done crammed into a blender on high.

This was labelled as "Thrash/Groove metal" but it fees like more like death'y thrash with some sick solos.

These guys are cool though. Finnish death/thrash stuff.

This however is apparently some pretty cool old school style death metal from Bangladesh by way of Germany.

And yet more cool old style death metal, this time from Venezuela.
https://redefiningdarknessrecords.bandcamp.com/album/a-whisper-of-an-horrendous-soul

And finally, to end on a gentler note. Some nice doom metal from Montana.

Hello! I forgot to do one, here was Friday's releases:

Orpheus Omega, melodic death. In line with the rest of their releases quality-wise, a solid 3.5 or 7 imo depending on your scale.
Whitechapel, deathcore, lots more alt metal involved in this one than usual. I didn't like it at all but I seem to be in the minority, people are losing their minds over this record.
Csejthe, atmoblack. Loved this album, their one before this is slightly better.
Vltimas, death metal supergroup
Ultar, great blackgaze
Triumvir Foul, death metal EP with noise interludes between each track
Nordjevel, black metal
The new Nightrage is up on spotify, melodic death.

Not a lot else really came out this week other than Disgruntled Anthropophagi's new album. Fun slam

The Cryptopsy show was extremely good. Hideous Divinity and Benighed both ruled, great energy from the frontmen. Half of Cryptopsy's set was NSV material and the rest was the best songs from the 2 Tome EPs with 1 Whisper Supremacy track. Aborted were bringing the place down, but I got the poo poo beaten out of me throughout the Cryptopsy so I sat that pit out.
