Life support makes it sound too dire imo, it's just a obvious reform that any capitalist with a brain would be able to see is beneficial for them long term. It's a worthwhile cost if it contributes to the long term stability of imperialism.

and not just because it'll let those people live, but in that microcosm the market will actually also work, they'll spend some of the extra money down at the diner and hardware store, buy some locally produced stuff from the guy they know, and even start their own business. i know that some in the thread view this as counterrevolutionary, but, like, there are people dying in very sad circumstances out there.

the only national retailer around my old stomping grounds is one dollar general. everything else is locally owned, except maybe a subway sandwich place located in a convince store. You'll have to drive about 40 miles to get to the nearest Walmart. The three biggest towns each have a grocery store that is locally owned, and each have locally owned hardware stores.

the isp is local (and in two cases, municipal including fiber and a wireless network available throughout the town). as is the TV service in one town.

in the town where every kid eats free is a gym, bakery, florist, flooring company, lumber yard, 2 hardware stores, three garages, a grocery store, two florists, a computer repair place, a medical clinic open 6 days a week, two restaurants, a gun shop, three bars, a home decor place, a pharmacy, two silk screening stores a pizza place (pizza ranch, natch) all with a population around 1100 people or so.

the area also has a shitload of wind turbines and solid solar potential. having lived there, I can say that 9 out of my 10 retail dollars were spent at mom and pop shops and stayed within the local community. the only movie theater is municipally owned and is staffed by volunteers. if you can stand to wait a few weeks, you can watch the marvel super hero movie of the season for $3. If you're a big spender, you can get a soda, candy, and a popcorn for $6 more.

My wife, on the other hand, will spend money willy nilly at Walmart and Amazon, much to my chagrin, so as a household it was probably 70-30 spent locally because I did all the grocery shopping. if i needed an ingredient I couldn't get in my small town, I'd drive 40 miles to buy, say, tomatillos at the local Latninx-owned grocery and just stock up a bunch and freeze my salsa verde for the next few times I needed it.

full socialism right now would be fantastic! not an economist, so I can only speak to what I lived, but an extra 1k/month per adult would do some good in the trumpiest enclaves of poor, uneducated people. at least in steve king's district where 20-30k will buy you a free standing house. often without getting a bank involved. That's how I did it.

but i moved away and i am selling my house to my brother on the installment plan for around half of what i paid for it. he was in over his head financially and he's now on his way to being a homeowner for around $15 grand while making $11 /hr.

i guess that's a ton of words to say in my experience, i agree with you and it is really easy to spend money locally in isolated communities, as weird as it sounds. a ubi would help a ton. it would also help people in more affluent areas. the place my wife and I are looking to rent is around $1500 a month. anyone in SFO,NYC,Boston, etc would kill for something that cheap, but that's 50 hours of work per week every week for a month to have one person making minimum wage to cover that.

One of the things I've noticed about the way politics has worked since at least Reagan is a recurring pattern of

1) Republicans get elected
2) Republicans propose all kinds of cuts to good and useful programs
3) Democrats scramble to block those cuts
4) Democrats can't block all of them, but they do manage to preserve some core programs (Medicare, Social Security, Obamacare protections) from being slashed or privatized

Over and over again.

White voters have traditionally been insulated from the worst of their choices, because the Democrats wade in there and fight for the programs that benefit them (Medicare, SS, farm subsidies, etc), so white voters have very little incentive to do anything but vote Republican. They get all the benefits of Republican rule (tax cuts, kicking brown and black people, putting women and fagg0rts in their place, bombing furriners, making libruls cry, etc.) and none of the bad stuff affects them, so why would they vote any other way?

For various reasons, this mechanism is breaking down in the Trump era, which leads to this thread. Dems have largely been run out of rural farming areas, so there's no counterweight to argue against gutting farm subsidies and launching tariff wars, so for the first time rural whites are getting exactly what they voted for. Same with rural health care spending and a bunch of other things.

I don’t agree with this. a lot of those voters do get affected by the bad stuff and believe dems are at fault when it affects them.

at least that’s what I seen. the people funding repubs? yeah, they’re reaping all the short term benefits

Dems are just as gleeful in their cuts and oppression. It's easy to point to Nixon and Reagan and say, "well this is why mass incarceration is a thing" but they are like ants compared to the many armed machine of exploitation and death that was Bill Clinton. It wasn't Reagan that made prison building the #1 housing program the government funds, nor him that basically eliminated all welfare to non-corporate entities. Obama was happy to gut medicare and social security as well in his grand bargain.

Dems are, at best, controlled opposition, there to take a bold stand against 1-2 cuts while approving of the rest, and never, ever, ever, ever under any circumstances proposing to undo previous cuts or even - god forbid - expand or better fund current programs

The most reasonable explanation is that he thought Hillary had it in the bag no matter what, but if the new emails did reveal something criminal the Republicans would accuse him of covering it up and destroy his career. If there was nothing, then his leak would be forgotten in Hillary's long-awaited coronation celebrations.

So he did the cowardly rear end-covering thing to guarantee his career was safe no matter what the probe revealed, except whoops.

The other reasonable and more cynical explanation is he thought Hillary had it in the bag but as a Republican he wanted to make sure his team held congress, and he figured Trump would never win so why not help the Republican downballot.
