They actually sold 68k total, but they're "collectable" so old people just keep them in the garage. For context, that's very nearly half as many as the Cadillac ATS has sold.

If you look at production numbers by model year they waaaaaay overestimated demand in the first model year. Went from 31,000 in 2002 down to under 10,000 in 2005. Content: Let's play "Tagged with Aircraft Remover or Just Another Quality GM Paint Job?"

MikeyTsi posted:The SSR was a legit good sports truck... The SSRs biggest problem was the loving price tag. It was fully $10,000 more than a same-year GTO, which had a manual available prior to ‘06, as well as the same powertrain. And the GTO had a back seat. And didn’t weigh 4700lbs. And isn’t a truck. We are not going to talk about the GTO’s trunk.

Problem was, it was a two seater with nearly zero performance potential (the 3.9 is a turd, and I don’t think contemporary mod motors would fit) and a chassis set up for comfort. It appealed to almost no one. Apparently Ford forgot that the Thunderbirds that the nu-Bird was styled after was a pretty hi-performance coupe for its time.

Yeah the new T-bird was nice looking but that's all I heard was complaints about how cramped it felt & how sluggish it was. It's like the only market Ford tried to appeal to was old retired people that drove to the store or casino a couple times a week.

I don't think the T-bird was a failure in any way for ford. The next retrobird likely would have followed the same pattern, copying the 58. It was just a victim of ford's restructuring. Ford has shown they're willing to stick with a "flop" if people love it. The Flex sells 20k a year which is an abysmal failure by modern measures, and it could be seeing it's 11th? model year this year. Where they hosed up the t-bird was not having the 300ho 4.6 in it near it's death. The T-bird died without the 4.6 or a supercharged 4.6. The Crown vic died without a coyote/6a. Both drat shames. it would have been lovely to see the T-bird grow back into a GT car.
