Take that you bastard. She's still alive, and makes a surface attack. I guess the captain wants to go down fighting. We see some skirmishes in the air. Another one? Their everywhere! Down goes a Liberator! There seems to have been more air fighting than I saw. But what the hell was up with those subs? We still won on ships though!

This guy had balls of steel! Two of them? The carriers have CAP to spare over Ndeni. Oh look, now they have escorts. Looks like I've arrived at the same time as the latest base force. Down they go! Yeah, more Kiwi's to the slaughter. Lets see what I can do to them. Well, to their ships. The Nisshin was a painful loss. I'm back! Normal service will be resumed!

Holy loving poo poo, the Allied Silent Service is taking heavy losses, but they are like rabid hyenas: biting and mauling even as it's getting shot to pieces. I mean the Roncador laid waste to the convoy AFTER getting depth charged to hell! It's debatable, but I think for the Japanese, Allied subs are the most annoying threat: they are hard to damage, may it be with escorts or with planes, the torpedo problem is solved rather quickly (quicker than you get anti sub radars in good number, at any rate) and there is a whole swarm of them.

Given a week the Escolar would have cost you more points in sunken ships than the Nisshin was worth so that loss was an even trade or better in the long run.

That's why you bomb the poo poo out of Manila's port at the start of the game and take out like... 80% of the initial sub force in the Philippines and surrounding area.

Isn't this the part of the game where Japanese ASW gets ahistorically insanely good? Or was that changed at some point?

Updates! 24 March 1945 US carrier aircraft sink a bunch of ships in a sweep of the waters around Okinawa, including the torpedo boat Tomozuru (the capsizing of which in a 1934 storm triggered mass reconsideration of Japan's design philosophy and modifications to many warships) and escort No. 68 as well as numerous freighters and auxiliaries. 26 March 1945 Why was the fast carrier fleet sweeping Okinawa? To pave the way for the preparatory invasion of Kerama Retto. The destroyer USS Halligan sank quickly following a mine strike while supporting this operation. Meanwhile, off the Schelde, corvette HMS Puffin suffered major damage when a midget submarine exploded after being rammed; Puffin survived but was not repaired. 27 March 1945 US land-based air sinks the German corvette Uj-205 (ex-Italian Colubrina) at Venice. 28 March 1945 Mines claim another victim in the Kerama Retto operation: the minesweeper Skylark. Carrier aircraft sink escort No. 33 near Kyushu and land-based air sinks the minesweeper W-11 off Makassar, Sulawesi.

The Lionfish continues to prowl. I've mobilized more ASW ships. I've not really bothered until now to conserve supplies. Oh thank god. I'm not liking this sub resurgence. I think all their subs are here. I was hoping for more kills. Why have my points jumped by 400? Nope, nothing here.

Take that! Here they come again! The carriers pick up some heat. I'm not the only one with escort issues it seems. Guam picks up a few kills. It's been a while since an enemy aircraft saw one of my carriers. The raiders see of an attack or two. Yeah, we put the beatdown on them.

That's a.. Lot of dead B-25's. They seem to not particularly do well. I think that's like a land based bomber?

Danann posted:10 B-25s killed by Zeroes for the loss of only one Zero. There were 60 Zeroes and 15 B-25's, and the Zeroes had flak support from the carriers. The B-25's also had no escort and the Zeroes were the updated models wtih heavier guns. So that level of kill ratio is awesome but not that out of line. B-25's are medium bombers and not that great at keepinf fighters off them.

Good morning! The poor buggers, they never stood a chance. Now this was a poor idea. Blasted subs. At least this one gets a hit back! The carriers feast again. We come off a bit worse here. Then murder this flight – though not without losses. Losses are swinging back and forth out there. That was a draw in the skies. The seas remain mine.

29 March 1945 US land-based air sinks the Japanese escorts No. 18 and No. 130 off the Indochinese coast; nearby, USS Hammerhead torpedoes No. 84. U-246 hits the frigate HMCS Teme with a homing torpedo just off Land's End, blowing off her stern; Teme survives but is not repaired. 30 March 1945 American heavy bombers hit the U-boat yards at Wilhelmshaven, striking the cruiser Köln, escort Königin Luise, and minesweeper M-329 in the naval dockyard in the process.
