I found the article based on the headline, and I don't think I was aware before that "the raft hovering a fraction of an inch above the water" was a selling point of this thing even though I'd read quite a bit about the investigations.

Trees coming down in storms is normal and expected. Trees coming down on clear days is unnerving. e: The wind looks to be blowing stiffly, at least.

The weirdest freak accident on construction site I've been at was a guy carrying a sheet of plywood on the 5th floor of a small wood frame condo project. He wasn't anywhere near an edge, there was of course a temporary railing all around, everything was to code and safety was being correctly followed. It was not a windy day at all. Suddenly a random huge gust of wind came out of nowhere strong enough to lift the guy carrying the plywood over his head up and over the railing. He wasn't able to let go in time.

From what I've seen, an actual professional would have removed the branches during his climb up, then cut sections off the top and lowered them down by rope.

the best tree jobs are when a client is having a tree removed and the landscaping below it re-done. you just cut the trunk as big as you feel like it and watch with wonder as it smashes tons of poo poo. you'd think it would go faster but you end up rubbernecking all the sweet bombs you're dropping

Yeah like, even if that hadn't smashed the house it doesn't look like there's any direction it could've fell that wouldn't have at least messed up some finished landscaping, nevermind any too-shallow utility/sprinkler lines. It could've gone better but it probably wouldn't have ever gone right, really.
