Aramoro posted:Labour are, traditionally, the party of the working class and the working class are racist as everyone else (which is lots). This isn't news to anyone. Yes. Not all of labour's racist base have jumped ship to UKIP and while I don't like being diplomatic at them I like the tories being in government a lot less. I'm hopeful that demographic trends will help because I think it's probably a lot less of a thing among the generation who had their brains destroyed by postmodern cultural marxism in the schools. Which I of course am all for. As they filter through society and hopefully seize more control of the party it will hopefully taper off.

Boing posted:My experience in academia is that attitudes in general trend much further left than in the general public, but it depends a lot on the field. In psychology probably half of the people I knew were literally card-carrying Labour members while in maths/computer science people are a bit more apolitical. I think engineers are the most right-leaning of the academic disciplines based on a graph I vaguely recall, but still significantly less likely to contain free market-type capitalists and racists than most other professions. In my experience it trends liberal rather than left, though there are probably more socialists in humanities than the general population they aren't ubiquitous. Plenty of nominally progressive types in my area have lost their loving minds over Brexit and gone full fubpee for example, though there are a lot of EU citizens which probably skews it. STEM types are extremely bad, however.

Bedshaped posted:As someone who's only just starting to interact with physics academics, I'm always curious where people lie in the political spectrum. Like how often does an Alessandro Strumia pop up or how many left to far-left people occupy the field. Consensus at cern is strumia was a huge dick doing what he did. The younger generations at cern are more aware of gender and other minority representation but even the older crowd thought that was hosed. Politically I reckon physicists want to be lefty but are lazy and don't really want to actively approach it. For the younger crowd you can append 'unless it looks good on twitter' to that. Academic twitter is loving terrible.

Bedshaped posted:Yeah that's the big problem. We are currently aligned in terms of immigration rules and visas and what not afaik. So anyone entering the UK or Ireland will be checked at the port/border and there's no need to check people for flights between the countries or at the border. This isn't 100% true. I'm South African and need a visa for being in the UK for any reason, but I can visit Ireland without a visa. Which makes the lack of border checking amusing.
