Of course the workers end up holding the bag and no accommodation will be made for their benefit, to the point of forcing them to pay for their own travel to get home. A tale as old as time

Miami’s signing some QB from the Iron so he’s got a job but yeah, this new AAF dude really hosed over a ton of people

It sucks because it seemed like the AAF was doing a lot right, from the (tacit) encouragement of the NFL, to having a broadcast deal, to incorporating new wrinkles like the Sky Judge. If a minor league was going to make it, it seemed like this would be the one.

I also think it's supremely weird to pull the plug after (not even) one season. It takes a while to build a fandom, but none of these leagues seem to budget for even one whole campaign.

Yeah me too.

The AAF was actually pretty good. The players you could tell cared and played hard and crew/technicians/workers seemed cool, the coaches were awesome and the presentation was good. It wasn't a loving joke like the UFL was.
What's sad is probably 3-5 people at the top were greedy assholes and that was all it took to just gently caress everything...

Exactly, it WAS good! I really enjoyed the football I saw. And I was absolutely prepared to be a lifetime fan and even to pay money to the league; like if they had all their games streaming like GamePass I absolutely would've paid like 60 bucks for the season

The league was set up to fail.

The CFL for example, has league revenues of somewhere around 200 million cdn and pays in the neighbourhood of 50 million cdn in player salaries. This is a league where the best teams make like 5-10 million in profit and some are losing a similar amount. They are probably as a league turning a profit of like 20 million bucks.

This is with a 40 million dollar a year tv deal plus whatever they get from ESPN, attendance way above what the AAF could expect at ticket prices triple or quadruple what those teams were asking. Plus real sponsorships from large corporations.

The AAF had a salary structure for players roughly equivalent to the average salary in the CFL, and was probably paying coaching staffs something similar to what CFL coaches make. But they wanted to play half the number of games (so less ticket revenue/tv revenue) and rely on what exactly? I highly doubt the cbs/nfl network/tnt deal was worth anything close to making up the difference. They knew they were short on cash before they even started and the plan to have some loving app save them was nuts from the get go.

You're all garbage, back up the truck BACK IT UP!
Dundon probably wont get the app he supposedly wanted

quote:

It’s not clear, however, whether Dundon’s investment in AAF contemplates AAF technologies. As reported by Ad Age last September, MGM Resorts International entered into a contract with AAF to develop sports betting technologies. The contract would indicate whether MGM Resorts owns the intellectual property and licenses it to AAF, or vice-versa. If MGM Resorts owns the related intellectual property, Dundon might not own the AAF app or its data.

Even if we assume that Dundon became the owner of the AAF gambling app, he may be barred from shutting down the league simply because he obtained the app and doesn’t want the league. For one, he owes fiduciary duties to other investors in AAF. Those duties include a duty to act in good faith, a duty of care and a duty of loyalty. Other investors could potentially sue him for breaching those duties. They would need to find evidence that Dundon looked out for his own interests at their—and the AAF’s—expense.

Similarly, if Dundon agreed to certain obligations and duties in his contract to purchase part of the AAF, other investors could contend that Dundon breached those obligations and duties. They could also argue that he unjustly enriched himself and willfully mispresented his intentions to the point of committing commercial fraud.
