Not technically music chat, but adjacent - Britney Spears apparently checked into rehab last week and just today broke a 3 month silence on social media with an Instagram meme post about "me time."

I fully acknowledge that I'm probably thinking way too deeply about this; I've been listening to Britney's Gram, a podcast that started out just talking about her Instagram, but has basically snowballed into a huge realtime conspiracy theory about her legal status and what is going on with her.

At the risk of sounding like a Britney truther, everything she's done since they announced the second Vegas residency has been weird and seemed like she had little choice in it. Combined with her weird legal situation (she's been in a conservatorship, with her father and a lawyer controlling all of her finances since shortly after her very public breakdown), the resignation of her lawyer after a huge pay bump, and her dad's illness it seems like something fishy is going on. I just hope she's doing ok and finally getting free of this weird arrangement.

Also I'm extremely hype for new CRJ.

Can you explain what you mean by fishy? I don’t quite get what’s fishy about her cancelling a residency because she wants to be with her dad that’s really sick, his condition worsening, and her being exhausted mentally because of it. Seems reasonable to me.

I saw her live in Oslo not long ago and it was honestly a very depressing show. It was fun getting my nostalgia on, definitely, and I don't like trying to interpret what other people thinks but my impression was that she honestly did not want to do the show at all. It was incredibly sloppy, and everything felt forced and like she just had to stress through every perfomance just to get the show over with.
I still love her though, and her music's still a big part of my childhood, so please take care of yourself Britney!

I can agree with this- After the Femme Fatale era it’s been all half assed. Work Bitch was a fun single but those albums were terrible, and not in a “I’m experimenting with my sound and seeing what works “ way , it just feels like she’s done.

I can see her bouncing back for another era, maybe 2- hell, after her last meltdown she served Blackout. She just needs to take it easy and decide if she still wants this or not (assuming her conservatorship isn’t forcing her to release albums)

It will be decades before we'll ever know the truth and I'm by no means a Spears Scholar but the whole thing is just so sad. Ever since she had her first meltdown due to Hollywood it seems like she has just been a hostage forced to perform for money and anytime she might break free, they point to K-Fed and back to her cell she goes.

This was what I was trying and failing to convey, thanks. The fishy thing to me is that the conservatorship is essentially a way to keep the caged bird singing - I'm sure there's something in there about custody of her kids, a certain number of albums, perfumes, residencies, etc. as well. At one point her loving boyfriend(/producer? Publicist? Paparazzi? Can't remember what Sam Lufte's deal was) and her dad had more control over the Britney Spears estate than she did.

Now that this lawyer dude suddenly resigned it's ALL on her dad. At her public announcement for the residency, she completely looked like she didn't want to be there. A three year residency without even a new single. I'm sure her dad being sick is hugely affecting her mental health anyway, but the fact that it feels like the media is covering this yet again with a crazy Britney narrative is loving gross.

I know I'm firmly in the minority of liking Britney Jean and Glory, even though they're maybe not her strongest. The song Passenger, for instance, can be taken as just another lame love song about losing yourself in the relationship or whatever, but when you take into consideration that she had way more creative control over this album and also that at that point she was half a decade into this thing and was a year into her 30s to boot, it has a way darker reading about control and convincing herself it's for the best.

I already know I sound like a loving Qanon psycho so I'll stop there. I just want her to be free to do what she wants and be happy and from everything that's come out in the past 6 months it seems like that's gonna be a while. :smith:

I wouldn't say you sound like a psycho at all, based on what we know about her and how celebs get handled in general, your speculation sounds quite feasible. Especially with K-Fed getting 45k a month in child support, I'm sure he has something on them, combined with the fact that she's been performing since childhood, she probably has no real sense of business, finance or even how much her image is truly worth at this point.

i mean we can't permanently cancel him because FutureSex/LoveSounds is too good but he's definitely in the timeout box for that garbage

i think it's pretty clear that he's always been the person keeping an N'Sync reunion from happening because unlike literally everyone else who has ever been in a boy band (with the exception of Marky Mark) he is still famous and doesn't need that poo poo, but if there's one audience that would truly mark out seeing the other 4/5 of that band it's Ariana and her fans, so this was pretty great for them.

i shouldn't be surprised but all five of them nailed the choreography. I expect an award show reunion after Justin's next album underperforms and then a tour with just the other four alongside the other reunion circuit boy bands.

i think Cardi has permanently shook Nicki, she has really gone 5 steps toward the deep end since Cardi came on the scene. Which is funny because I love Cardi and her music but Cardi's never gonna be able to rap like Nicki at her best (so, Monster)

edit: I've seen people talking about how quiet the crowd sounds for Ari but I think this stage is set up to really downplay the crowd noise for the stream, some of the other stages (especially the ones that BLACKPINK and Billie were on) didn't do that and so they sounded louder. Somehow I doubt that the crowd for BLACKPINK is louder than Ari's at least at Coachella (now, during an arena show, I might buy that)
