A pretty good response I think is that all the horrible things people think socialism will do turn out to be happening just as badly or even worse under capitalism.

Yeah maybe so, but good luck getting someone to admit that athletes saying "doing flips proves the correctness of the political path we have chosen, the advantages of the system, and they are becoming a symbol of superiority" is equivalent or preferable to saying God Bless America

They're both programmed robot responses, but the one sure looks creepy-crawly from the perspective of the other. Uncanny valley type stuff

It's possible for one to be less bad than the other while both still being bad. I don't think anyone is claiming capitalism is blameless.

Kind of like how Trump and Pence won't say we're morally superior to Russia because we do bad stuff too. We can have questionable morals and still be better than another country that does worse.

Yeah, this is kinda the pragmatic answer I was expecting. Socialists will have an awfully hard sell until they have a good answer to "why should we believe you when you say It'll Be Different This Time?"

Seems like it's one of those "intractable human nature" kinds of problems. A self-sustaining system uses people's human impulses (greed, tribalism, inertia) to its advantage, and that's why capitalism has momentum; people literally don't have to do anything or put in any uncomfortable effort for it to "work". Socialism seems like it's founded on the idea that all people everywhere will be able to put aside their baser human instincts and work together toward a greater goal, and boy howdy the evidence seems to be against that. Unless there's some way to change either a) human nature or b) socialism's seeming incompatibility with it, it's not going to win over anyone whose argument is "Yeah our system is flawed, but it's better than the alternative" (or "Socialism would work if people were angels; but then if people were angels, any system would work").

I don't think these problems are insurmountable. And for what its worth, I'm not just whinging about it, I'm desperately trying to figure this out as well. There are certainly structures and mechanisms in society that can obviate some of our worst impulses, but any structures we come up with had better be resilient enough to deal with human failures in a flexible and empathetic manner. At the very least, understanding the indispensable relationship between political, civil and social/economic rights would get us a good way there.

Ghost Leviathan posted:

Yep. The problem is this isn't really a rallying cry. "We're only somewhat better than the other guys and you're probably going to have to have a bloody revolution to get there" isn't really a thing you're going to sell a revolution on. Also, its historically false in a number of instances. West Germany's "social capitalism" was far more robust and provided a higher standard of living than East Germany's command socialism, as was Deng's "state capitalism" as opposed to Mao's command socialism. There is nothing to indicate that socialists will behave fundamentally better than capitalists, because your personal behavior isn't really driven by ideology (in fact, ideology is often used to justify personal behavior).

Again, please keep in mind that this is a gentle critique. My issue has more to do with the willful ignorance of history and the fact that instead of deflecting away from history, we should be using it to combine a Marxist framework with everything we've learned in the last 170 years (about social structures, human cognition, economic systems, etc) to produce a better self-sustaining society. No model can be or is ever going to be perfect, so if the model isn't constantly changing and being updated, it means there will be no change in the outcome.

The thing about your examples are that they're all taking place in countries that are some of the most war-ravaged in history, and were authoritarian dictatorships.

If you look at socialism in first-world democratic nations, you get stuff like the eight-hour working day, unemployment benefits, disability benefits, old-age pensions, safety regulations for workers, and universal healthcare.

Economic policy is distinct from political freedom - you can have democratic socialism, and you can have authoritarian capitalism.
