Oh, I didn't mean it as an insult. This is a blind LP and they've improved by leaps and bounds since they started. It was just a response to them wondering in the video about how good they've gotten at the game.

It's going to pay off eventually--I'm sure of it.

Any day now.

You are correct that XP does not matter to Psi Operatives. They level up exclusively through time spent in the tube; they will not learn anything in combat. The true way of the mind is not to be found in battle, but in meditation. Or whatever.

Also, I always thought that the Berserker Queen was the easiest ruler to deal with, but well done on not letting her even get a move off. Like other berserkers, she has a tendency to go down harmlessly but if you let her get to you then you're going to have a bad day. One thing I'm sorry you missed is that it's possible (again, like regular berserkers) for her to freak entirely the gently caress out and attack the closest units, even if they're enemies. I've fought her and just had her thrash madly at the poor ADVENT in her idiot retinue, beating them to death while I filled her with bullets.

And regarding the Lost Tower, yeah, if your guns do 3-5 damage and you don't have both squad size upgrades, they become two-hit robots with the armor, four of them is a lot more of a problem for four troops, and the gimmick of dwindling numbers of soldiers available as you evacuate the floor gets a lot tenser. But you guys took "don't do Lost Tower immediately" to heart and here we are wrecking the "rather poo poo terminators" with mag weapons.

I wonder how much differently that might have gone if Funky hadn't pulled off that ridiculous Guardian chain, shredding all its armor and dealing a significant chunk of health right at the start of combat.

They might have had to use the freeze effect from the snake armor, but it would have gone mostly the same.

They probably still would've done enough damage that it'd just run away once it finally got a turn, right?

Yeah. Not much lost there, though, the Berserker Queen is easily the least effective alien ruler.

Yes, Nat is supremely arrogant now, and has decided the game isn't hard enough for him.

In theory the gas grenade would have shredded two armour anyway, so as long as a single funky overwatch hit, the next turn we would have just gassed her.

This shows once again that the pair are actually doing pretty well at the strategy of the game, but they don't have the knowledge or experience to understand the finer points. This, incidentally, is part of the fun of the LP.

They're doing an incredible job of playing, and not even just as blind players. Top tier strategizing. That Berserker Queen kill was excellent. That said, I really don't understand certain decisions made this episode especially since they had the information they needed to do better. On the other hand, this mission is going to be amazing to watch. Can't wait!

Yeah, Lost Tower can have some big difficulty swings depending on where you are in the game. I did it the first time with both squad size upgrades but basic weapons, (maybe just mag rifles?) and it was extremely tense keeping the two-armor suicide bombers off my last few soldiers as they made their way up.

Nordick posted:

it's really the frost bomb that's the truly overpowered thing here.
No joke. What I'm really learning from this LP is how OP the Alien Hunters weapons are. Let's put aside the pistol that gives your sharpshooter Combat Protocol and Conceal as a single action, or the axe that does more damage than a sword and gives your ranger Lightning Hands. The frost bomb is an AoE stasis, can't miss, and lets you shoot at the frozen targets. I can see needing gimmicks like that to keep from getting steamrolled by the Rulers at lower levels, but man does it break the difficulty curve against normal enemies.

They’re doing incredibly well and the ways the game can gently caress them over is steadily lessening.

I still have high hopes for the archon king. He’s Tpk’d squads before.

Chryssalid terror missions can be a nasty nasty thing. Especially burrowed.

Gatekeepers and Sectopods sure but they have hacking and frost bombs.

I think what needs to happen is they need to underestimate a mission (like a terror mission really) and lose the frost bomb or I’ll say they’ve got this.

I can't believe the frost bomb works on Gatekeepers and Sectopods. Does it work on Avatars? because that's the other thing I can see absolutely murdering them if they don't have a fine grasp of squad action management by the time they run into it.

Yes for Avatars.

But frost grenades have a reduced effect on Sectopods. I think they only remove one or two of the former's their three actions and one of the gatekeeper's. I think it might be little randomized.

I will say they’re in for a nasty time in the game’s final encounter if they expect to lean on freezing enemies. Gonna be way too many bad guys around to frost grenade them all, and Nat&Tea have a habit of using expendable stuff early rather than saving it to the very last so they might go up against three avatars with no freezes. Then we’ll really see what they learned.

You do get your OP as hell Shen to basically carry you through the fight. And you do need to properly engage with the gimmicks. But it is doable with a low-level squad.

Behind the scenes, Julian has less accuracy than a normal sectopod, and only hits half as hard. A normal sectopod can one-shot dudes in predator armor. He also doesn't have access to the lighting field or wrath cannon, though the latter is a waste of the sectopod's turn anyway. He's a big ole stack of HP, but that's it.

Also, as mentioned above, you have Shen's capacitor discharge and other gimmicks, like luring him up on the generator platforms that explode for big damage + shred. IMO, the real challenge without mag weapons is keeping the flanking suicide robots out of your back row.
