Where do the republicans get this idea that Trump will steamroll Bernie into a landslide in the 2020 General. Where does this confidence come from?

They internally have this mythology that the American people will never, ever vote for an honest to God socialist. As much as they blasted Clinton and Obama for being far left socialists (and I'm sure many in their moron base believed it), many of them knew they were dealing with centrists, and they believe the biggest threat to the GOP winning are democrats far enough towards the middle that they don't alienate the country. Maybe that was once even true during the 90's, and there are still some Democrats who believe it.

If Bernie defeats Trump, they will be loving stunned to the core. They will have a hard time believing the polls if they show Bernie significantly up a month or so out. (Before that is fine, they just haven't gotten around to telling the people that Bernie is a wacky socialist yet, which obviously will win them the election since the guy is actually admitting to this heresy)

nah, they are fretting plenty about losing the culture war, which is why they are so narrowly focused on the courts overruling the nation. Their confidence is a Bernie thing, they genuinely think any other candidate might be a real challenger, but Bernie (and probably Warren as well) looks like political suicide to them. Losing to the socialist in a national American election, if that happens, is going to lead to months of amusing tears and freakouts.

I think part of this too is this stupid idea that political ideologies can neatly fit on a graph so they see socialism as an extension of (neo) liberalism rather than it's own distinct ideology. So the calculus is something like "Hillary was really liberal and she lost to Trump and Bernie is really really liberal so surely he will get destroyed."

It's like how after AOC won people came out of the woodwork to insist that this did not signal a new direction for the party because she was only electable in her little liberal corner of New York but her ideas couldn't possibly win people over in the rust belt so we gotta keep running center right candidates there.

I think this is also one of many reasons why they are obsessed with AOC. Crazy old Bernie from Vermont is one thing, but this wave seemingly figureheaded by AOC, in their head they are going "nah..... no way, surely not, right? This is a joke.... heh" while in their gut they are beginning to feel uneasy that maybe they missed something in their bubble.

Moral influence is contagious.

People model thier behavior on the the behaviors of others they like and respect or merely perceive to be of higher social status. The behaviors of some specfic individuals may be the model that larger than expected groups may follow, particularly if there are multiple iterations (eg. Y takes norms from X' behavior, then Z takes norms from Y's behavior)

In a time where this is being actively hosed with. Eg. Of Dems doing it to Republicans Red Menace Hits the Crimson Tide https://www.thisamericanlife.org/671/anything-can-be-anything/act-two-3
It's a bad idea write it off as "Whether or not any individual poster votes or not isn’t going to affect the election". That may be true with regards to the specfic votes of individuals. It is not true with regards to the effects that individuals may have on others who also vote.

So vote motherfuckers and insist that the people around you that respect you vote. That exertion of moral influence is probably far more important than your vote itself.

Efforts to make us go lol not voting are happening right now. They're doing it to Bernie, Buttgeig, Warren, Biden, etc. Some of it, we're going to be sympathetic to. I don't want Biden to win the primary. I think that would be a disaster. But gently caress allowing malign actors to use that to cause me to discourage others not to vote.

In much the same way that it felt utterly inconceivable to everyone-not-a-chud that Trump could win, so the idea of Bernie winning feels utterly inconceivable to the center and right. Like, in their eyes, "socialist" is on par with "pedophile". The idea of a socialist President is as inconceivable to them as reality-tv-moron-pussy-grabber-prez seemed to us.

Honestly, framing the entire Creepy Uncle Joe thing a a binary disqualifying question is bad and I hope the narrative can be changed. It's what is enabling him to keep on trucking, because everyone is talking about whether or not touching a lady's shoulder or patriarchaly kissing the back of her head is a career ending incident. Which is a bad framing of the issue and is keeping him afloat with the older people who think kids these days are too soft, and other nursing home truisms.

It's a visual metaphor of his horrible instincts and policy. There's no way that over the decades of giving out unrequested shoulder massages, grabbing wastes, rubbing noses, and kissing ladies that he didn't feel them tense up, pull away, and look skeeved out. The photos of uncomfortable women and girls have been low level and constant news for the entirety of his career. Yet he persisted, and when finally called out refuses to apologize. Just another entry in the pattern of refusing to apologize for anything, and demanding praise for past bad decisions and horrible actions.

Joe Biden isn't unfit to be President because he smelled the hair of a single Lt. Governor Candidate in Nevada. He's unfit because she was just one of the women he did it to over 4 decades, despite mounds of evidence that it was unappreciated. And this conduct and judgement is indicative of all his bad and horrible decisions that have been foisted on the country. There's a direct line to be drawn between a guy who keeps patronizingly treating every woman like his niece(still a bad uncle), and how he treated Anita Hill, wrote bankruptcy law, opposed busing, put together the Crime Bill, and ever other lovely thing he's done.

I mean, totally don't vote for a guy who goes around smelling women's hair and generally being that guy. Because, Jesus, what the hell, man? Just fight back against the narrative that this is the Milkshake Duck moment. Especially since this has been an ongoing narrative that spawned memes over a decade ago.

There's a pretty big disconnect between the "drat biden's done just die bitch" and what the folks watching the polls are saying, which is that it doesn't seem to be having much of a hit at all. I think the rumors of his demise are greatly overstated, in that again, boomer Dems are definitely about 30% of the electorate, and this changes nothing for them. It'd be like folks thinking Bernie's cooked because he's a socialist.

I think Biden's numbers start to fall once the debates hit and one of the other centrists makes a bigger splash. But this scandal is nowhere near killing him.

All I have to do is remember the 90s compared to now and I already feel irrelevant.
Especially when it comes to social media - I neither understand it nor make full use of it the way a lot of people do today. Like it blows my mind how a high schooler today will likely have access to Instagram from as early as age 13. I would be permanently depressed if it was me because I'd constantly be trying to compete to some ideal that instagram shows you and never being able to pass muster.
