TVs Ian posted:I used to live on Long Island, and would frequently have to drive on the parkways there. They were specifically designed with lower than normal bridges to keep buses off the highway (because Robert Moses was apparently a huge racist who wanted to keep those "urban" types off his beaches) and there are big "No Trucks" signs at every entrance. Despite that, at least once a month there would be a truck wedged under a bridge, and a guy with a low flatbed and a forklift transferring the cargo out of it. Once in a while they'd actually stop before the bridge, and you'd see them parked on the shoulder pondering their next move. oh hello I commute every day on the Southern State Not too long ago a school bus full of children can opened itself on the parkway on the west side. IIRC was being driven by a guy from New Jersey who was just mindlessly following his GPS. There's signs on every single entrance but they can be easy to miss if you're not specifically looking for it. I know some ramps the sign is blocked by foliage that's never pruned. Trucks wedging themselves under the bridges aren't so common anymore (the hutch going upstate is another story), but what is extremely common is a truck just barely stopping in time before it hit a bridge and needing a police escort so they can back up the nearest entrance ramp. One time I rented a small U-Haul and I asked them if I was legally allowed to drive on the parkways with it and they didn't know the answer to my question. So I stayed off and did not end up in a youtube compilation video.

We had a bridge that was marked 13' near my hometown; truckers would always tell one another it was actually 13'8" (which was technically true) over the CB, so they'd get overconfident and stuck

New York City has a policy of marking bridges twelve inches less than their true clearance and it’s nuts.

Then disaster strikes at the handful of spots that don’t have the extra foot. The federal standard is marking zero to three inches over the surveyed value, and with that there’s much less incentive to go for it when the numbers don’t check out.

I'll play. that the fire was deliberately started by the owner or their agent in an attempt to avoid prosecution. Let's not trade bans over it though, I'll put up $25 to the forums and $25 to your charity of choice as my stake.

Looks like they had already removed (400000 - 300000) / (400000 - 150000) = 40% of what they had to remove to get back into compliance? So you do that and then set fire to the rest? Seems easier to just burn the whole lot unless what they removed was the "good" or "valuable" toxic waste?? Seems like it could just be an accident while moving a lot of waste quickly with probably poor safety standards (since they don't care enough about safety to adhere to their permit). At least they had a permit and removed some stuff, so maybe they're not 100% scum?

It costs a lot of money to correctly dispose of hazardous/classified waste. They may have done what you said and just shifted what was cheapest to dispose of or still had commercial value. Then when faced with what still must be a pretty hefty price tag they realised that their insurance payments were up to date. I knew of a firm that was going into liquidation and they had to dispose/remove hundreds of tonnes of PVC. The scummy bastards bought a farm, dug some massive holes and buried it all and then resold the farm without saying poo poo. This was cheaper than paying for landfill costs. There really are some awful people in this world.

If someone's truck happens to be 13'11" and the tires are overinflated and there's a bump in the road and they hit the bridge and claim "The sign said 14' and my truck is less than that" I was driving through Austin once in a 26' straight truck. A Ryder rental. You could see 13' 6" clearly in your mirror so you wouldn't forget. I was watching the bridge height signs like a hawk all the way down hwy 35. Insurance doesn't cover topping a truck. I ended up accidentally taking the low side of 35 through Austin. I was doing fine until I saw a sign that said 13' 11" in the middle, and 13' 4" towards the shoulder. gently caress that! I thought to myself. I knew no-one would let me over so I just hit my turn signal and moved over a couple feet. I crowded the hell out of the left lane. The cars can take the shoulder, I'm not topping the truck. For all I knew, they could have resurfaced the road and now it's 4" higher than when the signs were placed. On the way back, I took the high side. Way less stress. I can't understand how truckers could miss an over-height sign. They should be looking at every overpass. When in doubt, stop and block traffic. Grab your measuring stick and make sure you can clear. Better to stop traffic for 15 minutes than 15 hours.

We've got trucks at work that I measured and listed the heights a bit higher than they actually are. I measured them empty and then added a bit, and wrote it up on the overhead compartment door above the driver's seat. So the one listed as 4.1m is more like 4m, when unloaded for example. Once loaded its likely a bit shorter. Better safe than sorry, and I never told anyone else about it.
