Despite being a 6 year old sub for a game that doesn't exist, the sub continues to experience almost perfectly linear subscriber growth. This is very unusual- in comparison, you can see the more organic rise-and-plateau of Guildwars2, a sub about the same age, or the rising interest in 40klore, a (reasonably) high quality discussion sub for warhammer stuff.

The graphs here are harder to parse immediately- I don't like that 0 post hours are light blue instead of blank, but whatever. If you squint a bit, it becomes apparent that starcitizen's post times are weird. GW2 and 40KLore have their highest-upvoted posts clustered about where you would expect, from 9 to 5 on the weekdays and late at night Sat/Sun. Late weekday nights see almost no posts, in general. But starcitizen has almost uniform post times- you can find 100+ upvoted posts at 3AM on a Tuesday. In fact the times when you are least likely to find highly upvoted SC content is... the weekends? Hmmm.

More interesting discrepancies here. Looking at popular tri-grams, i.e. 3 word phrases that crop up most in highly-upvoted posts, guildwars2 and 40klore are very organic- just a couple of 3 word phrases find any repetition at all, and it's mostly like "Guild Wars 2" or "My friend drew" which is more or less what you'd expect. Over in starcitizen land, however, 3-word phrases repeat with alarming regularity and they are almost entirely common marketing/dev phrases: "around the verse," "42 roadmap update," "citizen roadmap update" etc etc. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Using data that's a little dated here, but let's look at the (current) data from the 4 top submitters for 2016-2017.
* All 4 post almost exclusively on /r/Starcitizen, we're talking 95% or more of all posts over their account lifetimes
* coolgui and hasgaha both keep extremely regular posting times- very few posts on Fri/Sat and never anything overnight. HerpDerp and dastro are more organic, posting pretty much any time at all.
* The vast majority of their posts consist of links to imgur, youtube, or similar
* 3 of the 4 have tapered off enormously in their total posting- rather than moving on to other subs, they seem to have just faded away. MrHerpDerp has continued to post as though it was his full time job.

So what can we conclude from all of this? Not much, except that something sure smells about Star Citizen's subreddit. Linear sub growth despite nothing to engage the community, the most popular posts are almost always marketing-related and posted during business hours, and the top submitters post exclusively to that sub and simply stop using reddit when they are done, instead of moving on to other subs. None of this is hard evidence that there's a major astroturfing operation underway- but it certainly does support the theory.
