Been digging this as well. Their last album was killer too.

Also thanks to whoever recommended Hellripper.

I don’t know how I didn’t think of Devin Townsend in general. He has a ton of super heavy stuff with (mostly) cleans throughout.

New album is still blowing my mind :3:

Nice. Did they do Eraser? That's one of the songs I remember being hella good live, and the crowd going apeshit at the chorus part.

e: and yeah isn't Peter like close to 50 now?

If we're talkin bout ATG ripoffs As Blood Runs Black's first album is literally Slaughter of the Soul with breakdowns, and that rules extremely hard. I'm sure you all know the name from years ago and skipped over it in deathcore's heyday but I would seriously give this a chance, it's one of the best dxc albums.

We're in this weird timeline where ATG released SOTS which heavily inspired metalcore bands a few years later, which heavily inspired deathcore bands after that, and now there are melodeath bands playing melodeath inspired by metalcore/deathcore that was inspired by ATG like Light This City.

Yeah Slaughter of the Soul's a great album and all but it gets a little boring to listen to three dozen bands write the same album.

Melodeath is kind of weird, it's a real broad category for different sounding bands. A lot of it does sound like thrash metal with power choruses but like Kalmah or Insomnium or Swallow the Sun sound nothing like that. Genre boundaries are weird.

I mean, is Sepultura a thrash metal band or a death metal band? I honestly couldn't tell you.

I mean, they're kinda both? Most of the songs I remember (primarily stuff from Chaos AD and Roots) have both death and thrash riffs in them, and Max's tonal-but-growly vocals kind of split the difference.

it would be nice if they copied the first two at the gates instead, because, in addition to those albums being the best ones, they're also much weirder than slaughter of the soul. like none of the people who like wacky instruments in their metal seem to remember the actually good use of violin on red in the sky for example.
