It's not that there is a new group of voters waiting to be mobilized. It is that in Christianity there is already a large group of people with a particular set of symbols they participate in already in thier brains. The right has misused those symbols for political ends for decades. To turn people who participate in them into something else.

The left can do that too. And public figures are beginning to. That's not going to appear in data about groups. It's a narrative change. It's a change in the use of common symbols and language. It takes a while to do its thing.

I think you're right. Rev. Barber's Moral Mondays campaign seemed pretty successful, though that was admittedly largely mobilizing an existing alliance between minorities of faith and secular whites. I suppose if the pundit class is looking for a sea change in white Christians they could discount the impact of the Religious Left, but that ignores the immense importance of black churches and Hispanic Catholics in mobilizing those communities for the Democratic coalition. There's a reason the GOP keep trying to prevent "Souls to the Polls" programs and ban early voting on Sundays.

I think the biggest issue with a lot of Christian groups is that opposing abortions is treated as an issue of the highest importance. So people either use that single issue to determine how to vote, or at least heavily sway their vote to Republicans. I'm not sure how Dems can capture those individuals. I suspect they would need people to stop being single issue voters.

A lot of countries work on the Napoleonic system of justice as well though maybe we should switch to presumption of guilt like they use?

The fact is that Grand Jury proceedings are secret by law, and they are required by the Constitution and it would require a constitutional amendment to change it which no one is going to do in order to save Chelsea "hanging out with the alt-right" Manning from jail. Also at this point she's standing on this "principle" in order to defend Assange and wikileaks which has proven itself to be little more than an appendage of the Russian intelligence community. Notice that it never leaks dirt on Putin?

Manning may just be a useful idiot for the far right and the Russian intelligence agencies rather than a knowing participant supporting one of the most brutal and homophobic regimes on the planet, a regime that is currently supporting right wing movements world wide in order to undermine the very concept of Democracy, but she's still providing them support with her refusal to follow the law and work with the grand jury in the investigation. She is no friend to the left as long as she's carrying the water of the Fascists.

Says the guy who literally tried to make his point by pointing out that other countries do things differently.

The fact remains that under current law all Grand Jury proceedings are secret, it's done for a number of reasons not the least of which is to avoid prejudicing the potential jury pools against a defendant or causing them other reputation damage for things that they aren't charged for. It's the standard that everyone is held to there for she is asking for special treatment for "reasons" she knew the consequences for her decision so she chose to be in jail and she gets to live with that consequence.

The mistake I think was made was conflating an instance of authoritarianism as socialism / communism. Seeing Stalin's Soviet Union pushed many theologians who were socialists into being realist cold warriors. That's not our context anymore and authoritarianism (whoch is still the enemy) can insert itself into any type of goverment.
