It doesn't really force you to upgrade because even out of AppleCare you can get a replacement top case (battery/keyboard/trackpad/etc) for $200, which is nothing compared to upgrading if you're content w/ your older laptop other than a battery with high cycle count. In the meantime any warranty replacements they do for a single top case component requires replacing everything, which on the surface seems like a waste on their part. However, I'm guessing they end up reusing any non-broken components in future top case replacements, rather than using only brand new parts. I'd also guess the glued battery means many more out of warranty people opt for the Apple battery replacement (as opposed to 3rd party) than would if the battery was easily removable. Gluing the battery probably helped them shave off some laptop thickness (and we all know how much Apple loves thin devices), as it gives them more flexibility on how to distribute the battery in the case, lets them use a thinner shell for the battery (doesn't need a hard plastic exterior as it isn't meant to be handled/removed) and doesn't require any mounts/clips for securing the battery in place.

Does anybody know if Apple replaces the entire topcase for a $199 out of warranty MBP battery replacement? That seems like a pretty reasonable price.

For what it's worth, I prefer the keyboard on the 2017 to the earlier generation.

I publish between 4-6000 words a week, and write probably twice that. The short throw of the 2017 doesn't bother me, and I prefer having an evenly weighted keyswitch to what I always felt were really mushy keys on the older hardware. I've also had no mechanical issues since August of 2017 when I bought it, but it also lives inside a laptop sleeve and only gets used on solid surfaces, not at weird angles or on clothing or fabric.

The downside of having an extra long keyboard replacement does suck quite a bit, but when you're relying on a piece of hardware to function in a professional capacity you need at least a few backups -- all of my stuff is stored in 3-4 cloud locations, with external SSDs archiving larger projects.

I write between 25k and 50k a week. I won’t buy the new machines keyboard. I’m looking at Swappa to grab a 2015 in June, and maybe an old Thinkpad I’ll throw Linux on. I’m seriously that much of a hater of the new design,

I'm looking for a monitor to use at home, something that's as good or better than my old (but still great) Thunderbolt monitor at work. I'm doing design stuff but I don't need it to be professional level, it's just for occasional use. I found this that seems ok (IPS, 2560x1440), but I don't really know what I'm looking for. I know Viewsonic's been around a while but I don't know their reputation. Any opinions?

Same resolution, same features(I think), same brand, bigger screen (32"), $45 cheaper.

As far as Viewsonic, they are (or at least were) absolute workhorses. I had three of them for work and they lasted for 10 years with no washout or weirdness. I now work out of my home office and use an LG 29" Ultrawide (it's shorter than you'd think because the screen is so wide). But I am thinking about getting a bigger monitor with a higher vertical resolution and haven't decided whether to go UWHD or not. Thanks for kick-starting my brain to add stuff to the list to evaluate.

What's the best desktop docking solution for an MBP?

I have a Ubuntu desktop hooked up to a 27" monitor through DP with a spare HDMI connection.

The obvious solution is to get a USB C dock with HDMI out and then a USB KVM for switching keyboard/mouse.

Anyone have a more elegant solution?

My macbook pro randomly will input two letter "e"s when I am typing. I can not figure out why it is doing this. At first, I thought I just must be double tapping the button but that turned out to be wrong. I googled my problem and found what I thought would be the solution. I went into system preferences>keyboard and turned off key repeat. This did not fix the problem. Has anyone had this issue/does anyone know how to fix this? It's getting really annoying have to delete random Es all the time.

That's definitely a hardware/keyboard issue. A crumb under the key can do that, and you can maybe get lucky by taking some air to it.

It's nigh-impossible to fix this yourself, because Apple's "clever" butterfly design makes it inevitable that removing keycaps to clean under them will break the little struts that attach to them.

I appreciate the responses to my problem. Thanks y'all. I'm nowhere near an apple store for two weeks and can't get it taken care of before then. I popped off the key and found nothing. I still shot some air at it, but the problem remains. Frustrating that this issue exists. Looks like my finals are all about to have a lot of extra Es.

Not sure if this would be better in the old computer poo poo thread, but looking for a bit of help with an old Mac question:

My brother-in-law has managed to get his hands on a working PowerMac G5 (7,2) and has asked what the best way to get it on WiFi would be (no wireless preinstalled). Not quite sure what he’s planning on doing on a 15 year-old machine once he’s online, but the question is does anyone have a recommendation for a currently available USB wireless dongle that will work on this G5? I think it’ll take up to OSX 10.5.8.

https://www.macrumors.com/2019/04/16/2018-macbook-air-400-nits-brighness-tech-specs/

Supposedly upgrading to macOS 10.14.4 will give the 2018 MacBook Air a BRIGHTER screen.

Applying the update will increase the maximum brightness from 300 nits to 400 nits.

drat! I’ll hold off because I’m getting some kind of MacBook with my new job, but even with an 8/128 it’s tempting.

Really though I’m gonna try the iOS life for a while. I’ve been hacking it on a 16 GB 1st Gen Air, so a 6th Gen should be somewhat of an improvement. I think I can do it without going too crazy.

I have a new job and my trainer has a MacBook Pro that she specifically asked for, and got, because the company is actually pretty cool and accommodating to employee's wants/needs (plus she's been there for ten years). A lot of the software we use is Windows only, no big deal, she ruins a virtualized Windows instance while training, and macOS for everything else.

However, one reaaaaaaaly old accounting software we use needs the function keys.

"So we're gonna need to use your computer for this part, asecondduck, because *gestures at touchbar* my computer doesn't have an F5 key."

...

Me, not wanting to seem like a know-it-all rear end in a top hat: "Uhm, hmm. I wonder... what happens when you press that "Fn" key on the bottom left of your keyboard?"

The trainer: *surprised Pikachu face*

Not trying to make fun of her or anything, she's a good person, but maaaaaaaaan, I feel like if you're gonna ask your company to pay for a specific piece of hardware for you you should know/learn how to use it!
