hrm. I wonder who the hosts are going to be of this new so called top gear. TBH, I don't think they need the baggage that top gear brings and are basically already making the american top gear I want to watch... across all their original shows. I just watched the dirt every day rubicon in old 4WDs and it was great.

I think they really enjoyed the show like aspect of it. Also I'm surprised the BBC let them use that footage

In the United States we never got the Cortina. I know it's far from a similar car, but in terms of "everybody having one" would the eighties/early nineties Taurus be the rough equivalent?

Maybe similar to Contour/Escort/Taurussincx posted:Does anyone know why they're abandoning the studio format? Too much work and hassle over just airing clips? I think Amazon did some analytics of top gear episodes and saw that the specials were a lot more popular. Also, it's probably cheaper. Not only were they filming on location, they also had to film tent segments. Now they just have to do films.

Odd, I thought the whole premise of TGT was that they no longer have to worry about budget (Because of the unique way in which Amazon is funded)

The Contour and Fusion are literally Mondeo rebadges. Taurus was bigger. A closer equivalent to the Cortina would be the Falcon-Maverick-Granada-Fairmont lineage, the Sierra was technically closest to the Tempo (ugh) but also quite close to the Fox Mustang (but ofc they also sold it here as the Merkur). E: as far as "everyone has one" goes, think 90s Camry. Turbo Fondant fucked around with this message at 14:00 on Apr 12, 2019 |

Mainly salty as usual that we never get the cool wagons. Also, color me surprised as well the BBC let them use Top Gear footage. Didn't expect that at all.

Sucks to see them so sad about losing their show, they genuinely enjoyed having an audience and the show's format worked well (both TG and TGT). Then again the specials are pretty amazing so at least we'll have that.

I started tearing up during the church scene when people were holding the pictures of themselves as kids with their parents Fords. Not sure why that got me as I detest all things Ford (had a Taurus wagon once) Was pretty flabbergasted during the montage at the end until the "Don't Stop" guy who was obviously a plant. The old TG scenes were pretty jarring when you notice how young they looked in a few.

sincx posted:Does anyone know why they're abandoning the studio format? Too much work and hassle over just airing clips? Amazon has said they want to keep TGT going for several more seasons, albeit in the shorter "all special" format they're changing to. My guess is that Amazon has enough data to find that the "studio segment, drive car around track, film" format was getting played out (since they know exactly what episodes and parts of episodes people actually watch), so they probably decided that the budget would be better spent on doing fewer episodes per year, but in format that got more viewers (especially people who aren't car enthusiasts) and drew more attention to the show.

I'm hoping road trips include the old new TG style cheap car challenges, behind the specials those were always a blast to watch. I'll miss conversation street and Hammond's enthusiastic introductions to them, he seemed genuine in his enthusiasm for the terrible puns.

drat they got me for a moment there, although I suspected something when Clarkson said "the show as you know it" was ending, I could certainly imagine all the travelling and ridiculous stuff they do has to be getting pretty difficult for these three old farts. I'm super happy they're continuing with the adventures, but losing the audience is kind of a bummer, I generally liked having an occasional break in the tent, although the guests were still mostly pointless and once you cut them, there's little reason to keep the audience around just to watch the clips on the TVs. The audience seemed to make a lot more sense in the context of TG when it was supposed to look like a physical car show, as in a big hangar or convention center full of actual cool cars you could walk up to and look at, and here’s these three guys who are there to talk about them and demo them to you and talk to your face about what chance you’ll have of sitting in one.

The tent did lose its main purpose early on when they did away with actually going anywhere in it. With no guests, travel, or live prop-gimmicks anymore, the only remaining casualty is Conversation Street. But maybe they can work that into the adventure specials by literally stopping by the side of a road in whatever town they're near, setting up some chairs, and discussing automotive non-sequiturs whilst confused locals look on.
