They jumped blindly off a building and went "OH WHAT" when there was a civilian there to ruin their concealment. Imagine how they'll react when it's an enemy's sightline instead. Probably "OH COME ON", but still.

So will this be the time that they finally run into everyone's favorite Death Bugs? I quite like the team in place and i don't want anyone to die, per say....but a lil something to knock 'em outta their complacency could be amusing to watch!

Oh and Severa peeking her head out to watch when Emi was taking that Overwatch shot was just precious.

The tools of a hero mean nothing without a solid core.

The Andromedon weirdness was because at the change it turns from a... call it "person" type unit, who can be flanked and take cover and lean around it, into a mech type who can't be flanked or lean or anything. So it was fully blocked by the van instead of mostly blocked. Not that there's anything logical about that or you could have forseen the issue.

The trouble with sparks is that I compare them with MECs from Enemy Within and find them lacking.

Sure, Shen can make a nice robot friend, but it's not nearly as cool as what Vahlen would have done. She would have strapped California to a table and cut off his arms and legs, and then he'd be an unparalleled alien killing machine.

I think the reason Sparks seem underwhelming compared to MECs is that they come in as rookies while, depending on when you did Lost Towers, your normal troops are Captain+. They are also no longer the only melee-capable troops (and don't have the awesome cinematic melee animations), and their rookie level accuracy is hilighted by the fact that (in vanilla) they can't use weapon upgrades.

Objectively, they are good. Their weapons are a tier higher than the rest of the squad, and they have free EXO armor. Overdrive is one of the best abilities in the game bar none, and the rest of their good abilities show up in the first few ranks.

I ran a gimmick squad of three Sparks and the three faction soldiers in WoTC against endgame enemies because I didn't want to fatigue my A- or B-teams on a pop-up mission, and was surprised by how effective they were. The higher tier weapons, multiple heavy weapons, and multiple overdrives adds up to a lot of damage output.

Are we going to tell them about continent bonuses? They've gotten one and were like "oh cool" when they got it, but they didn't seem to think about it. The one in North America, which they could get if they built one more radio tower, decreases black market costs, which is very good! But since they don't seem to have any paths to Europe or Africa from North America, they probably won't "accidentally" get the bonus by building another tower there.

Which is why you do Lost Towers as soon as it pops up so you don't have to babysit a baby SPARK to become the god-machine it's destined to be.

Yeah it'd be a real shame if sparks don't get a look in at all but it is understandable when it's a toss up between existing high level characters and starting from scratch.

Two comments in the videos did stick out though, one being not wanting to raise another pokemon when Dash Rendar at Corporal is pretty much just that (no ban plz Blind Sally). In that Very Difficult mission you made some tactical... whoopsies and mostly carried Dash through the mission to a Flawless rating, so it's very possible to bring soldiers up to speed at this stage in the game.

The other comment was about wanting more armour shredding abilities. The spark's main weapon does this by default and they have a heavy weapon slot so that's a lot of bonus additional shredding.

Spark's aren't amazingly overpowered but they do add some fun options if you spec them right. My main gripe is the fact they have a completely separate weapon/armour upgrade costs and I'm not sure why Firaxis felt the need to hobble them that way.

Emi. They've got Spag as a spare combat Ranger. What they haven't got is a Tech spec'ed Specialist, so Emi's replacement would have to get brought up from Rookie again.

Yeah rangers are fairly replaceable, they build kills and promotions real quick especially if you've got one already started like Spag. Emi would be a hard loss.

The morale loss from Pete's death would also be hard to recover from though. Severa too, I'm not sure Nat would ever get over it.

Yeah, Spark Knights make a better 6th man than rookies or Corporals, and while they aren't crucial to a deep bench in Vanilla the way they are in WotC, you guys should train up at least one to get the full experience.

Even though your soldier couldn't see them from the destination, the route he took to the destination went through tiles they could see.

Buried chryssalids are unquestionably the cheapest thing in the game but you can listen for the burying noise and you’ll know how many there are. And you did bring the scan. There’s an item that does more scans, as well, so the traps are kind of your incentive to not lean on grenades and give people something else for a mission. Or you can just eat a hit and keep right on blowing everyone up. Or get a bladestorm ranger on point and watch him tear them apart as you cackle madly. Or same, except get really angry when he misses and gets poisoned because :xcom:

If nothing else I at least understand why they changed Chryssalids like they did. New XCOM's tactical combat is a very different animal from classic X-COM, and old Chryssalids were very much designed to the specifications of classic X-COM's combat.

That Advent Elite Officer really was the mvp for the aliens. Wounding 3 XCOM soldiers before dying is pretty much a win for them at this point. Too bad you can't make a memorial poster for enemies. It probably won't matter though, since I doubt the lp'ers will get another mission within 4 to 8 days.

Perhaps I'm being overly pessimistic, but I think that the game won't be able to seriously threaten the LP'ers chances of winning. They read spoilers about the rulers and overall, their playstyle is too conservative and deliberate to get surprised by new enemies or accidentally triggering a second pod. Nat has his preferred tactics figured out and Tea is there to reign him in when he's considering anything slightly risky.

I don't think anyone who's got to this stage in any modern xcom is in danger of dealing with anything but the mildest speedbump, especially on Veteran. The creeping sense of hubris/boredom as you run out of things to do is about the only way I get anyone killed from here out. Say, sending Severa off in to the distance and activating a Sectopod/Avatar/Gatekeeper/Archon King as the last move of the turn.

Archon King is a game ender if they trigger it late in the turn... Or don't have the frost grenades... Or some other pretty big ifs. Apart from that, I figure they've got it in the bag - the solo Avatar is entirely comical and the final fight can kill a soldier or two but I've never seen a teamwipe.
