I'm curious about the water damage. I hear that's often worse than the flames itself. This really sucks. It was such an awesome structure. It's too dark to see anything from the south of Paris anymore, but it seems it's still burning?

It's still burning, yes. They're trying to keep the fire from spreading to the bell towers.

And it looks like part of the stone vault caved in, probably where the spire fell:

This is arguably one of the downsides to not having a tv. Still, even on fire and being wrecked it's awesome. Just look at that. I hope the front and the bell towers make it. Though one of the "secret" best views of the cathedral was from back near the tip of the island, I suppose that won't be back for some time.

And here we go, it turns out that the government (current and the ones before) is using the patrimoine budget as a buffer for other stuff, and that the general state of historical monuments in France is quite dire as a result.
Apparently everyone in the know was expecting an incident like that sooner or later.
What we need is a national campaign for the patrimoi.... ah, a tax-free donation scheme thing, right.

https://www.cnews.fr/france/2019-04-16/incendie-de-notre-dame-les-specialistes-du-patrimoine-en-colere-831341

Also, do we think the reconstruction is going to go to the Compagnons or another appropriate organisation, or is Bouygues gonna get it ?

How do Americans view the burning of that old cathedral? The politoon thread gives an element of answer: a lot of crying Quasimodos (Disney's version, of course), and one traced Cosette by mistake.

But what about the intellectuals? https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/notre-dame-cathedral-paris-fire-whats-next-822743/

quote:

But for some people in France, Notre Dame has also served as a deep-seated symbol of resentment, a monument to a deeply flawed institution and an idealized Christian European France that arguably never existed in the first place. “The building was so overburdened with meaning that its burning feels like an act of liberation,” says Patricio del Real, an architecture historian at Harvard University. If nothing else, the cathedral has been viewed by some as a stodgy reminder of “the old city — the embodiment of the Paris of stone and faith — just as the Eiffel Tower exemplifies the Paris of modernity, joie de vivre and change,” Michael Kimmelmann wrote for the New York Times.
Wow. There's just so much stupid packed in here, I don't know where to start.

quote:

Despite politicians on both sides of the French political spectrum discouraging people from trying to politicize the Notre Dame fire, it would be a mistake to view the building as little more than a Paris tourist attraction, says John Harwood, an architectural historian and associate professor at the University of Toronto. “It’s literally a political monument. All cathedrals are,” he says. For centuries, the cathedral was the seat of the bishop of the Catholic Church at a time when there was virtually no distinction between church and state. “It was the center and seat of political power not just in Paris, but in France,” he says. “And that remained the case even after the French Revolution and through successive revolutions and political power and regimes.”
What's scary is that he's a professor.

quote:

Although Macron and donors like Pinault have emphasized that the cathedral should be rebuilt as close to the original as possible, some architectural historians like Brigniani believe that would be complicated, given the many stages of the cathedral’s evolution. “The question becomes, which Notre Dame are you actually rebuilding?,” he says. Harwood, too, believes that it would be a mistake to try to recreate the edifice as it once stood, as LeDuc did more than 150 years ago. Any rebuilding should be a reflection not of an old France, or the France that never was — a non-secular, white European France — but a reflection of the France of today, a France that is currently in the making. “The idea that you can recreate the building is naive. It is to repeat past errors, category errors of thought, and one has to imagine that if anything is done to the building it has to be an expression of what we want — the Catholics of France, the French people — want. What is an expression of who we are now? What does it represent, who is it for?,” he says.
They're really invested in claiming France was always post-colonial modern France, that it was never a medieval country without any territory outside of Europe, that it never had Christianity as a state religion...

Nathalie Loiseau was part of a fash student election group back in 1984, but it's cool: she claims joined without knowing who they were and doesn't remember actually campaign for them:

quote:

« À ce moment-là, j’ai été, d’après mes recoupements – parce que pour être tout à fait honnête j’avais complètement oublié cet épisode –, approchée pour participer à une liste qui voulait accentuer le pluralisme à Sciences-Po, alors quasi inexistant, et qui cherchait des femmes. J’ai dit oui » a expliqué Nathalie Loiseau.

« J’aurais sans doute dû regarder de plus près de quoi il s’agissait », admet toutefois la candidate aux Européennes, précisant que si elle avait « milité, tracté, fait campagne », elle « s’en souviendrait, et ce n’est pas le cas ».

"I should probably have looked closer into who they were" (you'd have to have been blind not to know what they were about :ssh: ). No wonder she became a centrist.

I believe that the head of Vinci at the time (or the head of the company who brought the highway and was brought by Vinci later)was the son in law of the minister of Transport of the time. The same minister of transport who failed in his attempt to get elected in my region (Picardie) and spent some time denying having used automatic robot-phone calls to call targeted voters the morning of the election (which is illegal in France). I still remember hearing his recorded voice on my phone that morning.
Also if you think that the sell of the airports is bad, yes Chikimi is right, they loving want to sell La Française des Jeux, the state monopoly lottery and betting company. I guess it generates too much money for the state. They really need to sell that to their friends and families. Also to pension funds.
