I still use a SanDisk. I'm outside a lot for work in an area with very little wifi. I save lovely podcasts and prog albums on it.

I can't remember what exactly preceded it in my collection, might have been a Sony mp3 player that directly plugged in as a USB device and ran off a single AAA battery.

I just got one of these. the idea is that if i have a keyboard where twitter isn't an alt-tab away i might get more poo poo done. we'll see.

they were sold to schools to teach typing. lotsa writers love them for distraction-free generation of raw word count.

there's something fabulously retro about everything about it. they stopped making them in 2013, but the design and the tech are straight outta 2000. squidgy black plastic design! LCD! infrared networking! weighing about twice what you'd think it should! (2lb)

neo2 crew :respek:

it has a great keyboard, imo. but i'm used to bad laptop keys. i'm thinking of making a dustcover for mine. heads up, i lost an entire batch of work because i overwrote the files to my computer in a dumb way, so watch out for that. if you can work out a good save strategy, the thing is rock solid reliable and lasts forever on alkalines

basically this is a linux laptop so i just play back keystrokes into a google doc or w/e

will need to coopt the loved one's or kid's windows 10 box, see if the windows 7 software and drivers install and work, then i can look at upgrading the firmware

if i can be bothered

the UK ones, there was apparently an official carry bag - see this eBay listing for an AlphaSmart 3000, two models before.

heck, if i get to like this thing I might just buy one with a UK keyboard. it's not like they're expensive.

The mid90s macs had their own version, basically a keyboard and LCD with a few save slots. I think it used the keyboard connector to just fasttype into a word doc.

My favorite of course is the Apple Newton Emate

It runs PalmOS.

I like being able to thoughtlessly bang out stuff on the thing, but keeping track of what I've uploaded to the pc is a pain, so it's best used as a rough draft maker rather than editor. I wish they'd make a new one, but they'd just screw it up in every way.

The Dana runs PalmOS, the 3000/Neo/Neo2 run some super cut down AlphaSmart thing. The Dana's really a different sorta beast as far as I can tell.

yeah, the dana is a better editor. the neos are great for taking down ideas without reading what i've just typed. i installed a few tiny fonts just in case i do need to edit, though.

Great.

I get the DVDs b/c some stuff ain't on streaming or I want the commentary or some special feature. Some DVDs at the library, too. The Burden of Dreams DVD comes with a dang book with excerpts from production journals.

Still, Netflix's DVD thing goes all "Aquaman! Wanna add it to your queue???????"

More old computer poo poo today since I wasn't at work:

Got a Microbee RGB/CGA to VGA box, so I can run both the Amiga and Atari ST off a regular LCD screen. This CMV monitor is a piece of crap, so will grab a better monitor soon. However all seems to be fine. Sadly I haven't got anything to connect my C64 up to that type of connector. I do have a SCART female to Philips CM8833 RGB converter, but the Microbee box ain't happy with it. Also tried an Amiga to Philips RGB cable with the same issue. Maybe Philips wired their RGB strangely.

Ah well, still have the Commodore 1084 for the C64.

Netflix sent that out as a freebie around 2000 for the people who were early adopters, my parents had one at one point. I admit it was kinda nice to have a place for all your Netflix, so you didn't lose it.

Thats amazing! I lost my poo poo then realised it's this year! WOW in part but drat it wasn't a scene release back in the day. Even today that is absolutely amazing and I am now looking for the compeditors. Wow.

I still love the product in 64k of memory:

And 'the popular demo' :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pq-aLBNwpPQ

And Candytron's vectors and backend coding is insane:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m8Z22CURVc4

Context: I used to use a lot of the candytron wireframes for my scene releases while in university for graphic design. With professional workstations and Maya/3DSMax I still cant do what they did in raw code and I'm glad I got to shake hands with a few sceners at a conferance.

Kind of amazingly, there was only the slightest bit of scratch to the pots, and by the time I'd played with a bit trying to decide if I should break out the deoxit, the scratch was gone.

If I could buy one of these again, I would.

The one I had, I had to rewire the cord at the flex point at the mouse twice, then I had to add a bit of plastic over the LMB switch because the plastic peg that would push down on it had become so worn.

Can't remember what happened to it in the end. :rip:
