go to the store BEEP in akihabara even if you don't know anything about what it sells. It's a very fun place to browse and they have a bunch of old japanese computers out and running you can play with. Last time I was there I bought this and had to buy a danbooru and bubble wrappu at donki and checked it as baggage on the airplane to get it home

there are other old game stores in akiba but none with such a cool/curated selection and interactivity as BEEP. it's like going to some hyper nerd clubhouse. They sell a lot of stuff made by independent creators (all revolving around old computers/games), fanzines and hardware, etc. It's kinda hard to find because it's off the big main street and down a flight of stairs:

Don't buy stuff there though unless you know exactly what you're looking for and can't find it anywhere else, the price for old console games or whatever stuff you can get at 10 other shops in akiba is insanely high, but the really interesting stuff is competitively priced (or can only be found there). I've heard this shop described as stepping back in time to "old akiba" before the maid cafes and loli stuff

This makes me wonder. What are (public) onsen like for gay guys? Granted it's usually olds, on the other hand, I sometimes go to onsen.

All this talk of famima food is making me wish I had bought another suitcase and loaded the gently caress up with that poo poo and Choco Pies. The packaged pancakes with the butter and syrup in between is goddamn genius.

And what the gently caress happened in the US? The only Choco Pies they sell are the awful dry as dirt made-in-Korea poo poo. I can’t find authentic stuff anywhere. Even in the real Japanese markets. :sigh:

Quick question, are dress codes a thing in Japan? IE for temples do I have to wear long pants, does my partner have to cover her shoulders/hair anything like that? We won't be going clubbing or anything but how about higher end bars/resteraunts?

Your typical Japan goon has a kind of a chip on his shoulder about not being a weeb. But your old pal Bloodnose loves you and supports your hobbies and I fully encourage you to go all out. It's hard to understate how great the market is in Tokyo for all your anime, manga, game and other nerd poo poo is right now. I feel like there's more to see and shop now than any time I've been in the last ten years. It definitely feels more mainstream than it used to be and some chuds might bitch about that but honestly it just means more for us to buy and enjoy.

The extra suitcase I brought to Tokyo full of American snacks for goons came back full of this (minus the most graphically pornographic covers) :

And I could've bought so much more if I had more time in Akihabara and maybe another suitcase. And all of it is like 20-40% cheaper in Japan than in the west.

One more time: there's so much to shop in Akihabara. So much. Next time I'm leaving two solid days. I feel so bad about everything I missed out on when the shops started closing at 8 (why do nerd shops close at 8 on a Saturday??).

A really pro strat would be to go onto the Mandarake website beforehand and mark out the things you want to get in each shop. I should've thought of that. Lashinbang you could probably do too. But you also find great poo poo just browsing.

That is so loving cool, I love those computer/monitor combos. I'd probably be there all day taking pictures and clicking the keyboards. I really hope I can find a place like this in Osaka/Kyoto on my trip. Not that lugging around an old computer would be any fun.

EDIT: apparently its an "FM TOWNS 2".

Doesn't exist there I'm afraid, closest thing will be some places in dendentown like a-too but they're really typical used console game stores without anything really exotic

In osaka/kyoto go to arcades. The good taito station on the main drag in dendentown, the tiny hole in the wall almost across the street from it, the 2-3 places in shinsekai, a-cho in kyoto

it's not about it being more mainstream, if anything it's more weird. I mean I'm a giant weeb but modern otaku culture and akiba kinda freak me out. I mean if you specific hobby is anime titties, great? but it used to be a lot more varied and cater to a lot more hobbies beyond titty and rice cooker for china. Not saying that varied stuff isn't still there but there used to be a lot more for different kinds of nerds. also how does not being super into anime tiddy make someone a chud wtf

e: also dendentown is a lot better if you want to go to a japanese nerd district and have hobbies beyond anime wives

Dendentown is definitely on my 'to shop' list itinerary. I'm interested in old gaming consoles also, even/especially peripherals and handhelds. I've got neo geo pockets but theres a host of other colors and such I dont have and my wonderswan collection is woefully small.

I mean, not gonna lie, I don't mind an anime tiddy or two but I'm going with my wife and I am trying to keep a semblance of self respect around her, so it'll be a lot of:

"Ha-ha, pretty funny statues they got here, huh honey? Let's go look at that Kiki's Delivery Service stuff over there! :sweatdrop:"

I'm planning a full day in Akihabara between shopping and arcades, and I think that's very generous of her. She gets a kick out of a lot of it too, mind you, but I know it's not really her thing and I don't want to sour the trip for her.

You can bet we're going to Sunshine in Ikebukuro though. Are you allowed to just kind of pop your head in and look around the Pokémon Café or will they get mad that you're not buying anything? The prices on the snacks and stuff in there are kind of insane for what is basically a regular rear end pancake with a Pikachu stamped on it.

Be careful. The way they upsell and charge is super duper sneaky. It’s like south east Asia mode.

When I went they naturally offered us light sticks to use but when I asked “is there a charge??” They sheepishly said yes.

Listen, I just need to pick up either a Miyazaki thing or a Persona thing because I’ve been tasked with a shopping list. I’d rather die than go to a maid or butler cafe because that poo poo (moreso the former) is stupid, fake, and dumb and caters to assholes and creeps.

When did you go? I’m guessing it’s going to be heavily foreigners on weekdays as other people have work.

Also wonder how it is in recent years as there’s about 6x the tourists in Japan in the last five years or so, many of whom are Chinese for sure but also more westerners and it’s fairly central so I’m betting there’s an rear end ton of tourists in many places.

Last time I went it didn’t seem too dominated by foreigners but was definitely a fair mix, and this was on a weekend/friday
