New mandates from SEGA after that cover included Sonic never having a girlfriend or expressing emotions other than "being cool". Did Ken Penders' recent twitter meltdown get posted in this thread? It's fascinating that even the DeviantArt Sonic people can't even outdo the guy who wrote the comic for a decade.

Sonic lore always baffles me. Because as I remember, (and I was not a big video game playing kid, so I am probably wrong), the plot to most Sonic games is "run fast and avoid obstacles whilst collecting coins 'till you get to the end. Oh and occasionally you will have a boss fight where you jump on/into a machine driven by the baddie guy" How do you get a detailed and intricate story out of that? And Knuckles and Tails, and the pink bat lady etc. aren't they just other characters with different abilities that can make you run faster/avoid obstacles better? I am all for enjoying the games, and having fun playing them, but why the intricate stories? And why do people have to make those stories so creepily sexual?

Because they hired the type of guy to have a bunch of deviantart OCs and weird fetish art to do the Sonic comics for a staggeringly long time. It's not a "those people" thing it's a Ken Penders thing. Honestly I'd say he's largely to blame for the Sonic fandom getting as insane as it is, because all the poo poo we laugh at that Sonic fans do, was being done officially (and encouraged) by him.

Apparently Archie Comics was really loving bad at bookkeeping because when they fired him he said his contract stated that he got to keep all his "original characters, do not steal" creations and they lost their copy so they couldn't definitively say otherwise. There's also this whole thing about how there were two separate cartoon shows about it; one was a silly, goofy, Saturday morning type slapstick-hijinks cartoon, and the other one was a DARK AND EDGY POST-APOCALYPTIC WELL OF NIHILISM. I don't really know a lot more about it because every time I start reading up on it my skin gets all itchy

The 'darker' Sonic cartoon wasn't that dark, but it did have a plot that became the basis for the American comic and added on the environmental message popular in cartoons in the early 90s. The problem is people (mostly Ken Penders) remembered it as being dark, and decided that's what Sonic needed to be. That's where the divide between the comic and the games started. Hell, was Princess Sally ever even a game character?

IIRC Penders got the boot because just after infamous trashfire Sonic '06 came out SEGA decided to do everything they needed to to keep people from focusing on the negatives of Sonic, and went to review all their commercial things with Sonic. The latest issue of the comic at the time had a cover with Sonic hugging his legs and crying because there was a public announcement that his girlfriend was going to be married to Shadow or Knuckles, can't remember which. Of course they decided to deal with that poo poo fast. Of course that lead to Penders taking all his characters with him when he left, so they had to deal with that. So they crossed-over with the Archie MegaMan comic, and ended the ark with The universe getting reset so they could jettison the hundreds of comic original characters they couldn't use/didn't need. Because did they really need to keep around Dulcilina the Dragon and her abusive boyfriend?

Someone mentioned it before, but Archie literally lost his contract. I believe he produced a really suspect looking photocopy that said it all belonged to him, and Archie just kind of shrugged because they didn't care about the loving echidnas. Also, I had Sonic #1 as a kid, but didn't take care of it. Apparently it would have been worth a couple hundred now.
