Enter the Gungeon: Might have said this already, but getting to the Resourceful Rat's lair is absolutely miserable. First you have to be lucky enough for the game to give you enough cash to spend on the key to his domain, then you have to waste a key to open the hatch leading to the locked trap door leading to his domain. Fighting the resourceful rat is also miserable, because his first form is death-inducingly boring, the second form is brain aneurysm-inducingly annoying, and the third form is just punch out and if you don't get all the keys you can you won't unlock all of the rat's items so that you never have to loving fight him again

The way DC Universe Online turns into All Instances All the Time after you hit level 30 is just weird. For the early part of the game you're getting sent on missions that send you across Metropolis and Gotham, and the pattern is you do a few missions on the overworld before entering a "dungeon" and getting to the main villain, then you get sent somewhere else. It's a little predictable but a good rhythm. Then at around 30 you're sent on a bigger endgamey kinda mission, lots of high stakes on the narrative. You win, you get a big congrats from the big players of the DC Universe and are accepted as a big time hero/villain, with membership in either the Justice League or Legion of Doom.

And then they start sending you on instances. The problem with this is most of them are dungeons you've already played through, just with the enemies tuned more to your level (or "combat rank" because your level is maxed out but this other number keeps going up), and with better loot and all. The narrative chain just kinda stops completely, you're repeating earlier missions or encountering ones you didn't play on your path, stripped of most of their context. There is more content, but it kinda feels like you've reached the endgame in a fraction of the time it takes in other MMOs.

I honestly thought it had something to do with the game being free to play but that has nothing to do with it, it's just the way they decided to build this.

One of the sidequests to max out one of my blades straight up crashed and was, as far as I could tell, completely unrecoverable :qq:

My problem with that game is that once you had the combat system dialed in every fight ended up feeling more or less identical, just rack up a bunch of orbs and then pop 'em. Also the character design (and plot, even) made it feel like a porn game with the sex scenes edited out.

Towards the end of Strange Brigade now and I'm loving it still, but one little thing about that otherwise fantastic game that's annoying is this - the charging minutaur enemies aren't affected by the spinning blade traps. They just kind of rub past them while charging at you, so you can't be cute and lure them into them. It feels that could have been a fun way to do a lot of damage to my least favourite enemy.

I have absolutely no idea why this is the case.

It’s because Hardest and Inferno have different enemy arrangements. Easy-Hard are all identical except the enemies do more damage and drop better loot. In Hardest and Inferno they actually add or replace enemies so I guess they decided it wouldn’t be fair to let all the difficulties count as cleared if you just beat it on Inferno. Frankly, I think if you can beat it on Inferno you can beat it on anything else, but I’m not the game designer here

All Princesses are Tyrants

Exploding Zombies in Dying Light are really not my jam. Physically, they cast a similar if not identical silhouette to other, normal zombies. They don't stand out when you're beating your way through a horde, but if you so much as tap one they'll immediately explode and kill you from full health, which is especially annoying because you lose experience every time you die. In such a melee focused game deliberately designed to be visually confusing, this is a real bummer.

Compare to the exploding Boomer from Left 4 Dead, which is very obviously much bigger than normal zombies, and upon exploding covers your screen in bile and summons a bunch of normal zombies to come attack you. That has a nice sense of risk, consequence, and counter-play in an easy to identify package, whereas DL exploders simply punish your failure to pay attention with instant death and loss of experience. That's lame, and it's dragging down a game I otherwise love (mechanically, at least; the story is still awful)

Had to restart Sekiro 60% of the way through because I put it down for five minutes (to beat DS1 and 2) and I forgot how to play. The first boss is still dreadful. Even after you weed out the surrounding goons and stealth-kill his first health-bar the Chained Ogre is still a complete bitch because you are gated to 10% of the game-world, so no matter what his health-bar and posture is huge, and because he has a grab-attack. A magic grab-attack because he can teleport you into his arms when he does it. I don't know why From Software continues to put grab-attacks in their games for the past 10 years because they are always bullshit.

The Chained Ogre can also do a flying kick whereby he changes direction mid-air. In comparison Iudex Gundyr from DS3 was a harsh teacher but at least he was cool and manageable. This Ogre is just an obvious reskin from DS3's Lycanthrope. It even has the same sound-effects.

Yes, I beat him again after this post but he's still rotten.

The grab is dumb as all heck, until you realise it's not a Grab.

The game explicitly says you should use dodges on grabs, the animation is a grab and yet totally stuffs any attempt to use dodge. It's extremely poor game design as it's the first enemy that really uses the system of Lunge/Grab/Sweep rock paper scissors.

Anyway, that move is a Sweep with a Grab animation when it hits, jumping anywhere close to the correct time makes you entirely immune to it.

(Also terrible is that the game hits you over the head with the message it's weak to fire, yet all it does is stun it for about 2 seconds which is basically worthless.)

I didn't know about that at the time so not sure.

Also he has another grab that actually is a Grab.

The Sweep is the one where he steps back before diving forward and grabbing, the other one is a legit grab so don't try jumping that one.

I don't like the combat in Horizon Zero Dawn, or maybe I just need to git gud.

Sneaking round picking stuff off with headshots or silent kills is great, but if I get into actual combat I normally get wrecked. I end up dodging some robot's charge, and then it's behind me and by the time I've swung the camera round to work out what's going on it's charged at me again. Either that or I try to run away and get stuck on some scenery, or Aloy decides that touching a rock means it's time to stop running and I need to toggle it on again.

The ogre sucks because the way to fight him is like a Dark Souls boss where you bait out its moves then go in for a few pokes, rather than a Sekiro boss where you go in hard and never give it a chance to catch it's breath. I didn't even realize you could get a stealth death blow on the first one, I guess if you do that you probably have enough ammo to stunlock him with the fire tube for his second health bar.

Once the machines start getting bigger than doggie sized, some premeditation before you get into battle becomes important. Use the focus to see what the robots are most vulnerable to, shoot canisters and throw bombs to inflict elemental effects, and lay down a bunch of tripwire before engaging the bigger dinos. When in doubt, the Ropecaster is the most OP weapon in the game.

Oh for sure, if anyone is having trouble with the combat in horizon zero dawn, just go do something else for a while and level up. If you really want to break the entire games combat over your knee, get a Ropecaster and jam as many handling mods into it as you can.
