I'm thinking rather than an external event, Miura might take a page from Alexander the Great and have people get tired of living in Griffith's power fantasy and want to just, you know, live.

I somehow misread "Griffith" in the last part of your post as "Guts" and so thought you meant Guts was going to go Apostle because of Casca. So y'know I got a wildly different reading of what you were actually going for, my bad!

Just post dude. I've already come out and said that any live action berserk stuff needs to be old school puppet and animatronic monsters so the fighting isn't just a mess of cgi and obvious people alone in a green room.

I've only got a chunk of the Snake Lord part done, but here it is, for better or worse. Keep in mind it's a first draft- some of the dialogue sounds a little clunky to my ear, but I'll have to finish it up and do a full pass first.quote:A busy town center- the town of Koka. Wagons and pedestrians litter the streets; we note one carrying a load of distressed-looking women and children. A hulking man walks through the town gates and down the main street; while he wears a rough, tattered cloak to hide his identity, his size, the massive sword strapped to his back, and the metal apparatus that replaces his left forearm give him away. This is Guts. He approaches the town’s tavern and enters.

As far as stylistic choices: I agree on practical effects wherever possible, but I feel like there's a few things that'll need CGI to look anywhere halfway decent, like the Qlipoth and Puck. I definitely agree with GDT as director but consider Panos Cosmatos as a dark horse. Mandy had about the right vibe. Casting: Dave Bautista is my Guts, and I'm not budging on this. He's got the size and he's got the acting chops. I'm actually planning to handle Golden Age somewhat weirdly just to try and skate around having to cast Young Batista. Tilda Swinton, similarly, is Griffith/Femto. Puck's voice, I'm up in the air on, but I'm thinking Patton Oswalt just because he's got a similar-ish role on Happy! that he loving nails. Snake Lord and Slug Baron, I'm even more up in the air on, but I've got Charles Dance in mind for the latter for some reason (Ron Perlman would make a decent Snake Lord but he'd be an even better Zodd or Mozgus). Score: it has to be 80s synth. John Carpenter first choice, Magic Sword second.

I decided to google "Berserk Live Action" and came across this fan list in imdb https://www.imdb.com/list/ls065848099/ Chris Hemsworth as Guts Whoever made this kinda forgot that Guts has a wide range of expressions, and maybe I'm not familiar with his work, but to me Hemsworth comes as a bit too one note. In the comments someone suggested Joe Manganiello, and while he kinda looks the part already, he comes across the same lack of acting problem. Robert Pattinson as Griffith is an interesting choice. I could see that working, though. Charles Dance as the Slug apostle is a weird choice. He doesn't look the part to me, but he would probably make it work to the point that viewers would want him to have had more screentime. lezard_valeth fucked around with this message at 04:39 on Apr 21, 2019 |

Honestly I feel like Guts' casting is kind of tricky, because a Black Swordsman movie (where he's kind of just a flat, Medieval John Wick kind of character) would make casting agents think a one-note big guy could do it... but then that actor would totally loving flounder when stuff comes up that requires range, and that WILL inevitably come up. Part of why I'm set on Bautista is because, in addition to being big and scary, he's a legit amazing actor. Blade Runner 2049 sold me on him pretty hard.

Early Black Swordsman stuff should be more reserved violence and cold distance with most people outside of maybe the church girl if you start Snake Lord with him getting that church caravan killed, but most importantly, only really let that sadist streak out when he's torturing apostles to death and drinking in all that "I'm just a weak human" irony. Maybe try to play up him acting that way if it goes onto Slug Baron, but breaking down into tears when he shuffles out to the credit roll. Don't let Guts get really bad until he reaches the Lost Children Arc.

These last days, against what people have recommended me, I've watch the 2016-2017 anime. I...don't wanna talk about them. Now, however I decided to watch the Golden Age movies. I'm currently in the 1st one, and while I like it and like the style they decided to go with (sans the sporadical 3D awkwardness in some scenes), there's something I need to rant about. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAz3Qd21bb4&t=221s what the hell is the problem with Berserk and camera movement?????? JFC I let out an audible groan of frustration just now when this scene came up, because it's well setup and it's well resolved, but completely ruined by that frame-rate-drop camera movement It's not an isolated incident either. At the beginning of the movie when Guts is having flashbacks to Gambino you can barely make anything out because the camera won't stop spasming around. Let the goddamn shot linger! It's not as bad as 2016/2017 Berserk, but still, why?? Why won't Berserk's camera stop???

It's because the audience for a Berserk anime is a niche within a niche within a niche, and anime is a hosed up industry with long hours and shoestring budgets.

The films do work as a good intro for brand new people to get into the series (harder to get someone to watch a longer OAV series), and people generally like it when they see it. It's just no comparison for the manga.

I feel like Tony Jay kinda wouldn't have been quite right for Skull Knight. He was a little too inherently menacing and evil-sounding, and something about that doesn't quite read right; I'd want Skull Knight to be someone who sounds powerful, but who can also get across a sense of melancholy to the character without playing it too on-the-nose or having that undercut the former attribute, and both Keith David and Tony Todd would be beyond perfect. Tony Todd's actually sticking out to me more, now that I'm thinking about it in depth, because his performance in Candyman is dead-loving-on for this. e: also, the fact that we're talking about this in-depth and I haven't gotten immediately mocked tells me I might be onto something.

Do you see a new chapter of Berserk yet? It fills time between waiting for Godot's ghost to show up and spirit smith the sword one last time with the fangs and fire of a dragon/Grunbeld or at least, until the next big black book release.

Okay first off I'm imagining this more as a series rather than a movie. Honestly I think that's a big mistake for a lot of live action manga adaptations this often results in them trying to cram in too much of the manga and all suffer for it. Second casting of Guts? I'd say find someone new, it'll be easier to work around their schedules since they won't have many prior commitments. Same with Griffth and most of the Hawks. Bautista can be Pippin (we'll probably have to change his name just in case though.) For Casca I'm thinking Zoe Kravitz although she might be starting to blow up so I don't know. Now for the Skeleton Knight and Zodd (another name we may have to change) I've said it before here but I'm thinking to both add some gravitas to them and to communicate just how ancient these beings are I'd look for some older Shakespearean actors like Patrick Stewart or Ian McKellan or hell Brian Blessed. I'd say the same for the Godhand too.

Tony Jay as Void would have been loving perfect. Tony Jay as Mozgus would have worked in animation, but in live-action, not so much; Mozgus doesn't really need to be a voiced-over character when you could just cast someone like Ron Perlman, who's both a good actor and already looks like a fuckin' Easter Island head. David D. Davidson posted:Okay first off I'm imagining this more as a series rather than a movie. Honestly I think that's a big mistake for a lot of live action manga adaptations this often results in them trying to cram in too much of the manga and all suffer for it. As far as series versus movie: a series seems workable from a writing perspective, but it's sort of the same problem Alita runs into when you think about that dichotomy. Berserk is a story that kinda needs some serious budget to work right (for filming locations, costumes, props, etc, not just the cast and effects), and you're just not gonna get that budget on TV unless you're at either HBO or Amazon and win the fuckin' lottery to Game of Thrones levels; the low end of movie budgets is basically the absolute top of TV budgets. As far as casting: I don't necessarily disagree (and if it went TV, that'd probably be more or less required), but I also feel like saying "cast an unknown" is kind of a cop-out, so I prefer to only say that when I absolutely can't think of anybody. Bautista wouldn't be perfect- he's a little old for the role, honestly- but he's probably the best intersection of "big motherfucker" and "really, REALLY good at low-key emotional acting" currently working in cinema, and that's the important thing for Guts. Zoe Kravitz is way past the point of blowing up, so if that's your bar, she fails- I was personally thinking either her or Zazie Beetz, and the latter's probably more achievable. Name-changes are also a non-issue; it'd be pretty obvious to the Tolkien estate (or, failing that, a court) that the big black guy named Pippin has nothing to do with the tiny hobbit named Pippin, and Zodd is an avoidable problem by just treating "Nosferatu Zodd" as his full name. Shakespearean actors for the God Hand is a good call. WeedlordGoku69 fucked around with this message at 02:55 on Apr 22, 2019 |

I feel like Tony Jay's villain voice is a little unstable and filled with simmering rage for Void. The general impression I get with him is that he's totally, unshakably confident. Everything will happen as causality dictates, and he's just acting out his role. Dee Bradley Baker's Gravemind voice might work, or maybe go a little left-field and bring in Keith David for a deep, impressive voice that's unsettlingly human and reassuring to be coming out of a creature like that.
