It's my mom's birthday, and she wanted a bunch of family photos I've taken over the last few years so I was going through thousands of photos this weekend and I came across some crab photos. These are all taken along the pacific coast, mostly up near mendocino/ft. brag or possibly somewhere between there and maybe bodega bay. I don't recall but this crab may not have been alive There is an eel in these two photos but don't let it distract you from the crab oh hey there It's fun to let a crab scrabble around in your hand (did you notice there's a crab in the word scrabble because I did) My lovely wife is the hand model and yes that is a pile of other crap she's taking home with her in her other hand but we do not abduct the live crabs When you're done pestering the crab put it back tho Don't worry this shoe is for size comparisons only, there is no crab stomping see, it's fine I also have two crab videos to upload which I will post maybe tomorrow. e. nah I lied I uploaded them now https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ltWsvpHFrqM https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aCyH0MGagX0 Leperflesh fucked around with this message at 07:14 on Apr 22, 2019 |

Those are turtles, not crabs. However, that lady has a really soothing voice and those turtles are super chill so I'm ok with it. Carry on.

A sufficiently determined crab is nothing quite so much as an inevitability. If it truly desires to get into the mussel or through the obstacle, give it time and it will.

From top to bottom: the Mosaic Crab, Lophozozymus pictor; the Toxic Reef Crab, Zosimus aeneus; the Shawl Crab, Atergatis floridus All three of these are from Northern Australia and are highly toxic - especially the very appropriately named Toxic Reef Crab in the middle there, it's so poisonous that it can kill a person within hours of consuming one and that some Pacific Islanders reportedly used them as a reliable means of suicide. The reason it is so poisonous is that these crabs can accumulate a variety of neurotoxins - particularly tetrodotoxin and saxitoxin, both of which are absurdly lethal (by which I mean ingesting micrograms per kilogram of body weight can be fatal). So uh, don't eat these crabs please.

I’d been dead if ship wrecked there because I’ve read that all crabs were inherently non-toxic to start. We have the similar build ups of neurotoxins on the west coast of the US but no way that lethal. Just don’t eat the “crab butter” and entrails and it’s minimized.

Yeah I'd read a bit about the ones you have there - makes sense cause you guys have the red tide stuff there (here the marine algal blooms are usually harmless ones oddly enough) so that implies that there is readily available saxitoxin.
