Oh also the Gorch Fock isn’t technically a Nazi ship. She was built off the plans and I think some parts after the war to replace all the sister ships taken by various victorious powers. 1950s some time.

Now if you want a REALLY hosed ship you need to look at the original Gorch Fock. She was scuttled at the end of WW2 then raised by the Soviets and rechristened Tovarisch. After the fall of the USSR she reflagged as Ukrainian and was retired in 1993 because she was broken down and no one wanted to pay for repairs. There was a failed private attempt to restore her in England which folded because of the cost. She later was transferred to a German port for continued restoration and IIRC is a half-failing museum project. She was also re-re-christened Gorch Fock. This means there is a museum ship Gorch Fock (Ex-Tovarisch, ex-Gorch Fock) and a current service one with the same name but absent the delightfully insane rechristening history.

My head hurts from just trying to follow...

The actual best part was building the second HMS President to the lines of her predecessor for no reason other than to remind the Americans the RN captured the first one.

Before clicking I was thinking “it’s one of those old Nazi sailing ships isn’t it?”

Yup.

The answer is you’re replacing a bunch of parts in a ship made in the 30s for which there aren’t any spares. Lots of custom fabbing and lots of poo poo where one repair reveals a lot more. The USCG Eagle (ex-Horst Wessel, only ship in the US military where Hitler was present at her commissioning!) and Portuguese Navy Sagres (ex-Albert Leo Schlageter) have had similar issues. The engines have been a main source of issues. Eagle finally had the engine replaced with a modern diesel and then gave the old one to Portugal to use as spares for Sagres.

A credible former Eagle XO tells me she definitely still has a swastika, I think in the captains quarters. There’s an eagle or something covering it up. There’s also a public story that a reichsadler still visible on the ship used to have a swastika in its talons, so maybe the former is a confused version of the latter.

Another part of the problem with the dumb sailing ship repair bill is what according to coverage in the German press is an absolutely hilarious level of graft.

Yep.

My grandfather (dad's dad) was a Merchant Marine for all of WWII. Before it and after it. Liberty ships. Had a few sunk from under him.

Lower percentage than serving in a u-boat... which is kind of ironic I guess? I recall reading that merchant marine service in the Atlantic had a casualty rate equivalent to that for an infantry unit in combat.

Cities were Attack Subs for a bit, but the Seawolf and Virginias stopped that. States were Boomers, but now also Virginias. Though they will have to switch up the Virginias at some point because they want 66 of them.

For a while I was peeved at the impropriety of states being mere subs instead of carriers (once upon a time they were battleships), but then I realized the subs are probably more useful and important than the carriers anyway so whatever.

There are people who deserve to have ships named after them but I don't think it's possible to have ships named after people without getting people who don't deserve it on the list.

Realtalk, we need an active Lexington, Saratoga, Enterprise, Hornet and Yorktown at all times. Especially Enterprise. States as Boomers makes sense though, there will never be a lot of them and they have the power to end entire countries, states as fast attack is...eh.
