Craptacular! posted:But the reason, at least what I thought was the reason, that the brand is used as a touchstone to identify these people is because Panera uses free-range eggs and other measures that are essentially a marketing message aimed at liberal guilt, while still being a multinational conglomerate focused on making lots of money. People who see capitalism itself as the problem find this laughable because people who buy at Panera are effectively trying to fix the effects of consumption capitalism with more acts of capitalism, and if they were really smart they'd just eat where they want regardless of the company's record because All Companies Are Bad and so acts of consumption capitalism are just a necessary evil and trying to fix their evil by spending more on your goods rather than trying to reign them in with regulation is wasting your time and your money. Panera Bread as a designator of a demographic has nothing to do with free range eggs or healthy anything (especially since Panera only moved to a lot of those recently). While I am sure it was used at one time or another, it became a popular phrase during the Ossof race when he was competing in the GA 6th, which is the wealthy, northern suburbs of Atlanta. No reference to any food or etc. It was democratic strategists saying that they had to run candidates that appealed to white suburbanites.

mcmagic posted:I agree. I don't get why people are getting so worked up about this. If rich people want to have extra insurance on top of a rebust MfA, who cares? I'd be ok with everyone paying taxes into a M4A system, then choosing to squander their money on private insurance. But without a tax-based system, M4A will be kneecapped by private insurers and the pols beholden to them.

Badger of Basra posted:I guess I found someone in that weird 13% You can tell the proposals are coming from a place of desperation because the tax on trading isn't a particularly odd idea for someone who is essentially a financial watchdog. Fine, AOC's proposal isn't technically a wealth tax, but without controls preventing people from just taking their wealth and going - what exactly are you doing the wealth tax for? I forgot, they're really detailed.

she spent like 3 minutes fluffing up "your generation" to a 21 year old who asked about college debt (talking about how we can't afford diamond rings because of student debt and how this generation gets blamed for "killing" industries unfairly) before dropping the "we just can't fund debt forgiveness because we can't find the money" on literally the day that Sen. Warren dropped a policy paper explaining exactly how we can. She's also not a very good speaker generally.
