pthighs posted:So Game of Thones is dark as poo poo. Is that due to my 10 year old Samsung 1080p TV, or is it the way they film it? Try setting everything to Limited RGB; Full RGB is mainly for PCs. Another possibility is that your calibration is poo poo; shows like Daredevil are unwatchable on factory settings for instance. Copy the calibration profile from a review of your TV eg TFT Central's or Flatpanels'; rtings.com would be my rec if you had a newer TV. And make sure you apply it to every HDMI input. ufarn fucked around with this message at 13:15 on Apr 17, 2019 |

Speaking of, I need to watch GoT via streaming because HBOs live feed is hot garbage. All the dark scenes have this sort of horizontal smearing/blurring.

That scene near the end in Last Hearth was pretty bad to watch on my friends tv. Just basically all black and couldn’t tell what was going on. Not sure what sort of calibration was done though if any on his tv.

My DirecTV always looks like poo poo for shows that have dark scenes like Walking Dead or GOT. Try the HBO Go App to see if that is any better.

Anyone actually buy a ‘19 LG OLED yet? I figure it was worth waiting for, and my spidey senses tell me my ‘08 penny plasma isn’t long for this world.

Okay. I think the TV-optical-receiver-Plex issue is fixed. Turns out, for my situation, the only way to make it work correctly and consistently was to hook up everything via HDMI and *shudder* enable CEC. We’ve watched several shows and movies since then, and everything syncs up perfectly. Crossing my fingers that CEC doesn’t poo poo the bed at some future point. I’ve never had it work worth a drat in the past so I always disable it immediately. 🤞🏽

703 posted:This is what spurred my question Well burn in IS a thing with OLED, but the amount of use required to get to that point will likely never be experienced by you. https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-life-oled-burn-in-test Take a look at those tests, look at how many hours it takes to get to the point where it is unacceptable (they are testing a 20 hour a day loop, so 140 hours per week). If it's 12 weeks where it's problematic for you, that means it takes 1,680 hours. Ask yourself how many hours you realistically use your TV with that type of content over its lifespan. OLED burn in is cumulative, not based on continuous use, so in theory it will take the same amount of hours for the CNN bug to be burned into the screen. Or the health bar from a video game to be burned into the screen. I personally rarely play games more than 25-50 hours, with Breath of the Wild clocking in over 100 hours, and after looking at the FIFA or Call of Duty results after 1,000+ hours I decided that my use is not worth stressing over burn in.

Does anyone know what’s going on here with my TCL S405? This has happened only like 3-4 times in the 4 months I’ve had the tv. It’s happened both streaming from TV’s built in apps or playing games. Turning it off and back on again always fixes it.

I was recently given a Samsung NU7100. I've got my PS4 Pro hooked up to it, everything looks great, but occasionally (maybe once every couple hours) the screen will go black with a spinning circle on it for a few seconds. I can still hear the audio (via a sound bar with optical audio from the TV) and the game is running in the background. After a couple seconds the picture comes back. Anyone run into a similar issue or know what might be causing it?

Anyone run into a similar issue or know what might be causing it? This sounds like the Samsung mainboard bandwidth problem but that usually involves a completely black screen so maybe it’s not that? Try setting your PS4’s resolution to 2160p YUV or just 1080p and see if that seems to fix the problem. E: this is my last post on the subject: Fedule posted:oh no It strikes me you might reasonably decide that All That isn’t really worth the bother if your TV isn’t a recent purchase or you’re not so much of an AV nerd that having your PS4 set to force 4K YUV420 100% of the time won’t drive you insane. Also try a different HDMI cable (that's for sure HDMI 2.0), hit what sounds like the same issue with my PS4 on a KS8000 especially (or only?) in HDR games, tinkered with different stuff, google results had other people running in to it, finally took the cable from an Xbone and it's been fine since.

Yeah, I thought it might be the HDMI cable (I was using the old one that had been connect to my PS3) but I got a new cable (the Amazon basics one recommended by Wirecutter) and still have the issue. I guess I should get the TV online and see if there's an update, I've got no use for the Smart TV stuff so I haven't bothered yet.

The backlights in our Sharp flatscreen TV have died, and the task of finding a new one if it can’t be fixed has fallen to me. I need suggestions for good new TVs, between about 43” and 60”. It doesn’t necessarily have to be anything fancy, though 4K UHD might be nice. We don’t want it to be curved. I haven’t been given an exact budget. I suggested between about $1500 and $2000 and was told that was a good range, but we could probably go higher (or lower) if necessary. I. M. Yeah the 2019 models just came out so they're getting rid of older stock. If you wanna buy a TV the best time to do it is in February-April buying the previous year's model. Most deals are on eBay for reasons I'm not quite sure of but that's where I got LG OLED for $1000 off.
