Sounds like you might have Full/Limited RGB set up incorrectly. Basically means all dark colours from 0-16 (out of 255) are pitch black.

Try setting everything to Limited RGB; Full RGB is mainly for PCs.

Another possibility is that your calibration is poo poo; shows like Daredevil are unwatchable on factory settings for instance. Copy the calibration profile from a review of your TV eg TFT Central's or Flatpanels'; rtings.com would be my rec if you had a newer TV. And make sure you apply it to every HDMI input.

Speaking of, I need to watch GoT via streaming because HBOs live feed is hot garbage. All the dark scenes have this sort of horizontal smearing/blurring.

Hi.
Okay. I think the TV-optical-receiver-Plex issue is fixed.

Turns out, for my situation, the only way to make it work correctly and consistently was to hook up everything via HDMI and *shudder* enable CEC. We’ve watched several shows and movies since then, and everything syncs up perfectly.

Crossing my fingers that CEC doesn’t poo poo the bed at some future point. I’ve never had it work worth a drat in the past so I always disable it immediately. 🤞🏽

I'm wondering the same. My '08 Samsung plasma has been acting funny at times and I want to replace it, but I'm trying to be patient and see if prices go down on the older models or to see if the new model is a huge step up somehow.

Well burn in IS a thing with OLED, but the amount of use required to get to that point will likely never be experienced by you.

https://www.rtings.com/tv/learn/real-life-oled-burn-in-test

Take a look at those tests, look at how many hours it takes to get to the point where it is unacceptable (they are testing a 20 hour a day loop, so 140 hours per week). If it's 12 weeks where it's problematic for you, that means it takes 1,680 hours. Ask yourself how many hours you realistically use your TV with that type of content over its lifespan.

OLED burn in is cumulative, not based on continuous use, so in theory it will take the same amount of hours for the CNN bug to be burned into the screen. Or the health bar from a video game to be burned into the screen. I personally rarely play games more than 25-50 hours, with Breath of the Wild clocking in over 100 hours, and after looking at the FIFA or Call of Duty results after 1,000+ hours I decided that my use is not worth stressing over burn in.

I wonder if it was intentional. Maybe they wanted to get people moving to the tv to try and make things out and then suddenly get scared by the sudden confrontation. Either way it didn’t work.

Does anyone know what’s going on here with my TCL S405? This has happened only like 3-4 times in the 4 months I’ve had the tv. It’s happened both streaming from TV’s built in apps or playing games. Turning it off and back on again always fixes it.

Start remembering what you hear.
I was recently given a Samsung NU7100. I've got my PS4 Pro hooked up to it, everything looks great, but occasionally (maybe once every couple hours) the screen will go black with a spinning circle on it for a few seconds. I can still hear the audio (via a sound bar with optical audio from the TV) and the game is running in the background. After a couple seconds the picture comes back. Anyone run into a similar issue or know what might be causing it?

This sounds like the Samsung mainboard bandwidth problem but that usually involves a completely black screen so maybe it’s not that? Try setting your PS4’s resolution to 2160p YUV or just 1080p and see if that seems to fix the problem.

E: this is my last post on the subject:

Fedule posted:

oh no

Okay, here's what you do. First, make absolutely sure you're using a suitably specced HDMI cable. There's a KabelDirect brand one everyone loves you can find on Amazon. Bad cables can cause this symptom.

Second, try setting your "resolution" on the PS4 from Automatic to 2160p YUV420. If this "fixes" the problem, you're in trouble. (tip: you'll want resolution set to Automatic 100% of the time)

Samsung TVs have turned out to be susceptible to a mainboard flaw that causes the whole input system to choke on HDMI signals that use the full bandwidth necessary for 2160p60 video at more than a certain colour depth, causing the connection drops you see. The solution to this is to replace the mainboard.

You will need to convince Samsung's support crew to arrange this for you and herein lies the nightmare. They will give you the god drat runaround. They will tell you they will arrange a callback from a specialist, who will not call, and then when you call to find out what happened they will tell you that actually the specialist left some advice which will be something like "turn down the frame rate on the PS4". Do not give up. Do not relent. Insist on a mainboard replacement. I resolved long ago never to lose my poo poo and swear at call center staff because those people are at the bottom of every relevant ladder here but Samsung tested my resolve, and they will test yours. They will eventually offer to send an engineer to confirm your issue. This is good, because the engineer will be a contractor and therefore not with Samsung, and therefore competent.

(It's possible you can expedite this process by knowing all of this in advance and leading with the fact that you know you have a mainboard fault and you know it requires an engineer to confirm and you would like that arranged posthaste)

The engineer will probably want some cursory proof. I recommend sitting down beforehand and playing a game (I played Titanfall 2. It was real good!) while recording both with the PS4's internal capture and with a camera pointed at the physical TV. Get a couple of blackouts on camera, and sync and trim your footage on each device into a brief supercut to prove that the PS4 remains processing and it's just the TV that's faulty. They will then book the replacement. It will take however long it takes to order the part and then they will come and install it, which will take minutes. This will obviously result in a factory reset TV.

Samsung will probably tell you that if the engineer visits and can't find a problem you will have to pay for the callout. For me this turned out to be a lie and I suspect it will be a lie for you too. But confirm it anyway when the engineer calls you to confirm. I asked them whether I'd have to pay, and they were confused about how I could even have been told that.

The best of luck to you, and I'm sorry for what you're about to have to deal with.

It strikes me you might reasonably decide that All That isn’t really worth the bother if your TV isn’t a recent purchase or you’re not so much of an AV nerd that having your PS4 set to force 4K YUV420 100% of the time won’t drive you insane.

Also try a different HDMI cable (that's for sure HDMI 2.0), hit what sounds like the same issue with my PS4 on a KS8000 especially (or only?) in HDR games, tinkered with different stuff, google results had other people running in to it, finally took the cable from an Xbone and it's been fine since.

Yeah, I thought it might be the HDMI cable (I was using the old one that had been connect to my PS3) but I got a new cable (the Amazon basics one recommended by Wirecutter) and still have the issue.

I guess I should get the TV online and see if there's an update, I've got no use for the Smart TV stuff so I haven't bothered yet.

The backlights in our Sharp flatscreen TV have died, and the task of finding a new one if it can’t be fixed has fallen to me.

I need suggestions for good new TVs, between about 43” and 60”. It doesn’t necessarily have to be anything fancy, though 4K UHD might be nice. We don’t want it to be curved.

I haven’t been given an exact budget. I suggested between about $1500 and $2000 and was told that was a good range, but we could probably go higher (or lower) if necessary.
