That music plus Gary Throne will always make me time travel back to like 1997, staying up insanely late in Florida for a kid in elementary school to watch Teemu Selanne and Paul Kariya (Assuming he wasn’t concussed) be awesome for Anaheim (And still lose).

I don't know why everyone stopped doing these cool intros that recapped the previous games and almost treated it like a trailer. Even when I didn't give a poo poo about the teams, that stuff would get me fired up to watch.

When they replaced/remove the "ABC ON CFB" theme with "CFB ON ESPN" with some random country singer? That was garbage.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9zK86qBIpaY

These are INSANELY more likely to hook me into a game then some dipshit like Kenny Chesney singing about some new form of country.

No, the college football on ESPN theme sounds like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FSqhicmUINQ

But I agree, I loved the old ABC theme.

Another one that has gone the way of the dodo is the MLB on Fox theme which I think has just been replaced with the NFL on Fox theme. Which is dumb. The MLB theme is objectively better.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x6__Xr3ouAI

edit: Fox also scrapped their old college football theme, which was ALSO objectively better than the NFL theme.

I think he's talking about the gameday song but they also sometimes play a crappy country or butt rock song when they're doing to hype package for the prime time saturday game. There's entirely too much Imagine Dragons in their football broadcast.

Also yeah the new instrumental theme is way worse than the old one.

Yeah I don't like that they've made the Fox NFL theme just the fox theme. I will say I disagree with you on that college football theme. That thing sucked.

I definitely have a soft spot for the Fox NFL theme though. It's been my football theme since I was about 10 and since I was a Vikings fan they were always on Fox. Lots of memories tied up into that drat song. I'm personally so burnt out at times on football but when summer moves into fall and that theme kicks on for Week 1 I can't help but get juiced.

The best college themes integrate the drum line feel of a college band. Its so stupid that they moved away from that.

E: My favorite Sam Spence is definitely The Equalizer though.

Not even a Raiders fan...but goddamn...it's loving art. I live for watching old NFL Films highlights of pretty much any team, any game. Those guys are incredible.

Also "Heavy Action" while not a Sam Spence masterpiece? Deserves some love. Well before my time but to hear Cossell, Gifford and Michaels (Okay. That's where my era begins) hype up a match up in the tease was so amazingly pure.

Quoting from a while back, the voice gets muffled because it's a pretty simplistic (and lossy) encoding, so a lot of quality gets lost. Usually it's coming from weather offices or police stations, where they don't tend to spend a lot of money as well for high end audio equipment for that.

The grating beeps are actually filled with data. The longer beeps at the start are the actual message, and if it has an audio component, then you get the two tones right after them, then the message. The beeps at the end are the end of message signal.

The ESPN NFL Primetime highlights music is one of the better NFL-related tunes, and this is its best usage:

Otherwise, I will jump in and say I still use “Roundball Rock” as my ringtone to this day, but will also ride for the music Fuji TV uses for Formula 1 coverage in Japan:

This season actually had me missing NFL Primetime greatly. Some of the regular season games this year were fantastic and were in dire need of those pair.

There was this weird period of like...1999-2003 where weekends in fall were as follows:
(Saturday)
-awake a bit early to catch "Inside the NFL" to watch them discuss the league/Browns
-Watch College Gameday
-Watch the Noon Big Ten game (then the later ones which were generally Big XII)
-Watch the SEC at like..8 PM
-Watch USC or -insert PAC 10 team here- play at like 10 PM

(Sunday)
-Watch Deion Sanders, and Jerry Glanville on the CBS Pre-show. (Glanville was GREAT in that role!)
-Crank up Jim Donovan and Doug Dieken to hear them over the CBS D-team
-Listen to Madden and Summerall call the "late" game on Fox
-Watch NFL Primetime
-Watch a bit of the NFL Sunday game before going to bed.

(Monday)
-Watch MNF.

Football and cable nirvana during that time. Never felt gimmicky or lame. The only "country" act I'd see was Hank Jr. playing a song.

Even though it's obsolete now there was definitely some magic in watching NFL Primetime to see what all went on that day. Or "the fastest 2 minutes in sports" at halftime of the Sunday night game.

I thought Berman was decent at what he did but he has/had a REALLY over-inflated sense of his importance to the football world. I recall some interview he gave where he matter-of-factly stated that he was a major reason for NFL's popularity surge in such a way that it was a given everyone knew about.

Well yeah him doing anything except football highlights was always worse but that doesn't mean his football poo poo wasn't also really bad.

Except when he did golf, that was hilarious because I assume it upset people who watch golf, and there are few more noble pursuits than upsetting golfers.
