I am definitely liking the "WarioWare is postmodern" angle also. I'm not entirely convinced, but I think there's definitely something there. (The plot is literally "these games exist because of capitalism and greed, and they've been made with minimal effort, but you're still going to play them", isn't it?)

Yeah, you can't throw every genre in a blender and hope it works - you have to actually understand the different genres you're using and how to blend it. Like take Crypt of the Necrodancer! A Rhythm game and a Rogue-like? Doesn't seem like they'd be compatible at all, but the creators understand what will work together, and what they need to toss out.

I've never mentioned Charlie in there. Ever. I do a word search to see if I ever did. Nope.  That's how you eat someone's lunch. GODDAMN. (No, she won't guest on YIIK. But if I'm going down, I'm going down swinging.) Also she loves  and  emoticons a lot.

As I said, Andrew is now on the Demolition Games level where his character with Nazi hair is now speaking and signaling to them for instant and easy praise. Alex knows his chuddery is not normal and was trying to get more politically aware people to praise the game with certain parts of the writing. My own interpretation of YIIK is Alex making an entire game about how he "knows" an rear end in a top hat but you should tolerate him as he is anyway. All the stuff about postmodernism, the little comments on racial justice, the attempts at depth and relevancy - the entire game is Alex basically trying to get people looking at this portrait of himself and begging them to say he's okay as he is, that maybe you're a little like him yourself. Wario is a fat bastard who gave up a life of adventuring to be a CEO of a game company, except he also can't make games, so he ropes his "friends" into making games for him. Each game is a series of microgames, usually using some new bullshit gimmick Wario "invented" (that coincidentally mirror whatever Nintendo's hot new gimmick is). So he strong arms his friends into making mini games that use touch controls or whatever. It's a game about a game about smaller games, and often those smaller games will offer insight into the individual characters that made them. There's also various subplots, many of which hinge on the fact that Wario's a greedy piece of poo poo--like not paying his And a lot of the games are homages / deliberate knock offs of classic games, like one that's Pac-man but Wario. Others are gonzo, genre bending weird poo poo like using cat hands to unroll toilet paper as fast as possible. I don't know poo poo about post-modernism, but by the metric YIIK: A Prisencolinensinainciusol RPG is supposed to be post-modern Warioware is post-modern as hell. Also Wario's an unlikeable protagonist in... literally every game he's the star of. He's gross, he's offensive, he's loud and greedy. It works because he's also extremely entertaining, gets comeuppance frequently, and nobody acts like he's not repulsive. loving crazy.

The key to making an rear end in a top hat main character is to either start him on a redemption arc asap or to lean into it and make it funny. Blackadder wouldn't be nearly as entertaining if the titular character wasn't a walking pile of snark, surrounded by equally assholish or really stupid people, and he tends to get hosed over as often as he screws other people over.

I think a few people have touched on this already, but the Blackadder comparison made it really clear to me that Alex's lovely behavior provokes no consequences. Sometimes someone will tell Alex "you're a dick," but the only actual story or gameplay change that occurs directly because of Alex's assholishness is a character committing suicide... and then never being referenced again. It makes me think of shows like Always Sunny where the protagonists are clearly terrible people, but the fact that they're terrible actually drives the plot. People react to them, situations get created, consequences unfold. Alex being terrible results in

And the no consequences for his lovely behavior, again, make the game an unsubtle "Accept and Tolerate me" kind of story. Rather than Alex really redeeming himself in any true sense or even owning up to what he is, you're just supposed to like him eventually without any reason or action that could make him a likable jackass. He is and always will be a dull piece of poo poo. And because he is an author stand in, Allanson is really salty about people not liking his "game" and - by extension, him the real person.

I'm kind of amazed he hasn't found out already. It's his baby. He's talked with me a few times and I chatted with him when he was livestreaming the game. So far he's been pleasant and cordial and he was drunk half the times he went in the discord, not kidding I'll definitely discourage people (and they've been good) from messing with the Discord. There's a line between dunking on a bad game and being malicious and I'm trying very hard to stay on the first half. Jimmy is definitely going to be a much more positive experience. There are three endgame episodes, one chaos stream with mind dungeon payoff and an alternate ending to show off left. We should be on Jimmy a week from Monday at the current rate. I joined their Discord to silently watch because I was curious how they would react to the dev being on the Dick Masterson show. And for the most part they just... Didn't comment on it. They seem uninterested in the dev's politics and more just liked that he was interviewed on a popular thing and were mining it for info on how to find the 3rd ending. In general, you'll find WAY more interesting discussion and analysis of the game and its story here in this thread than on that discord. All they really do there is discuss their theories about how to find the 3rd ending, and in general seem like nice and positive people. In conclusion, do not touch poop.
