Speaking of metagames, what's your kid's Cat deck looking like these days? My step-daughter just turned seven and I'm building her a Cat deck. I'm probably including some Amonkhet Cats because it's not like she'll be playing in FNM anytime soon.

Would absolutely love to see some Junji Ito or Hirohiko Araki but I get them pulling out a couple big names and then filling the roster with mobile game artists. They ought to do these off style guide alt art promos more often.

I know, I just wanted to shift the moral culpability for going on such a bad tangent.

So the story of how Frank Cho goes full chud starts with someone else's work entirely. Specifically, it starts with a variant cover to Spider-Woman #1 by Milo Manara. This cover:

As soon as it got solicited, Marvel got a shitstorm of criticism, because, well... look at it. It's ugly, it's overly eroticised, and the anatomy is a god-damned inhuman mess. Now here's the thing: Milo Manara is a porn artist, and he's done variants for Marvel before. So everyone knew more or less what to expect out of him, but here's the other thing: Manara is -- rightly -- hailed as a master of anatomy, female anatomy in particular. He's incredibly off his game on this cover, and Manara's weak explanation about how there's a lip on the edge of that roof that Spider-Woman is climbing over really didn't hold water.

So Marvel got dragged on the internet, especially because this was back in 2014 and they were just starting to make an actual effort towards inclusivity (Ms. Marvel had only debuted a year previously), they made a token response to the controversy on tumblr, and then -- this is important -- they published the variant cover anyway. The damned thing came out.

But it was too late. The Internet had gone after titties. Frank Cho was triggered.

This whole thing happened in August 2014. In January 2015, Cho posts this on his personal website:

This is not a commissioned piece, or an official Marvel variant. It's a sketch cover -- a cover released intentionally blank, so fans can get artists to sketch something unique on it. Cho's simply taken one and done a sketch on it as a private citizen. (I'm not sure if he ever even offered it for sale, or just posted the scan on his website.) No word on why he felt the need to leap to Manara's defense six months after the fact, and honestly, he does his cause more harm than good. He's cheating like hell, changing the angle and Spider-Woman's pose while making the layout of the roof more obvious, and his piece still looks appreciably different -- and better -- than Manara's. All he's done is unintentionally called out just how bad the original was.

He is roundly ignored. Cho likes to draw exactly two things; apes and women with big breasts. Everyone writes it off as Cho being Cho. But Cho doesn't want to be ignored, he wants to strike a blow for titties. So, three months later, he escalates:

And this draws a response. Spider-Gwen is a freshly launched title, another salvo in Marvel's attempts to lure in a younger, more female fanbase. Oh, and she's sixteen goddamn years old. Cho is roundly told off, including by Spider-Gwen's actual artist. The criticism is basically "you are being a creep, we are trying to not be creeps any more so that girls will read comics, if you have to go be a creep please do not do it on the characters actively being pitched to young girls, and also stop sexualizing children you goddamn creep".

In response, Cho writes this on his blog:

quote:

Wow. What a crazy couple of days it has been. My parody cover sketch of Spider-Gwen aping the infamous Manara Spider-Woman pose sent some of the hypersensitive people in a tizzy.

To be honest, I was amused and surprised by the uproar since it was, in my opinion, over nothing. It’s essentially a small group of angry and humorless people ranting against my DRAWING of a pretty woman. It’s utter nonsense. This world would be a better and a happier place if some people just grow a sense of humor and relax.

Now, I’m getting bombarded by various bloggers asking for an interview addressing this “scandal”. Instead of me wasting my breath and precious time over this non-issue replying to all the interviewers, I’ve drawn another cover sketch in response which will, hopefully, answer all the questions.

You can see the chud-ism growing there. Everyone criticising him is "hypersensitive" and "humorless"! Why don't you just relax, like him, the dude who's drawn a porno of a child and another porno to defend that porno! He's having an extremely normal one, unlike you snowflakes! He's so incredibly relaxed that he's gonna draw another loving one to trigger the libs literally one day later, IT'S DEFINITELY NOT HIM WHO'S BEING HUMORLESS AND HYPERSENSITIVE ABOUT THIS OKAY.

(Full disclosure: I liked the Harley Quinn one at the time and, taken on its own, I still like it. But what I like is how incredibly self-aware it is: Harley's holding the pose because the Joker is explicitly trying to rile people up, while Harley derides the whole thing as played out. Sadly, as you can see, that self-awareness was a momentary blip and it won't be back.)

And that could have been the end of it. But for whatever reason, Cho was now locked in. And from that day to this one... he has. Not. Stopped.

They're all like that now. I just grabbed a representative five. Also, special note goes out to the one time someone actually paid him to do this, whereupon he crowed about the "anti-censorship" strike his butt cover was delivering, causing the author of that comic to disavow it.

Having made himself and his art completely toxic, Cho stopped getting work, but between his creator-owned stuff and the boobie sketches he sells online to own the libs he's doing fine. In the end, what's sad is how loving common this story is. Strip away the specific comic book flavoring and artistic talent, and you're left with just one more story of one more white guy who woke up one day to find that his specific slice of the world now cared about what people who weren't white guys thought, interpreted it as an attack on his very self, and went apeshit crazy and decided the only solution was to wage war on anything that gave any power to non-white guys. It's the story of every nazi, gamergater, fox news grandpa, republican, redpiller, whatever they call themselves. Honestly, I thought it was gonna be funnier to type up, but I'm just so goddamn tired of this loving story.

Anyway, Frank Cho, everybody. In a five year long and counting shitfit because one bad comic book cover got called mean names on the Internet.

Since not a lot has been said on collection apps:

TCG Player on iOS quick review

Inputting cards: It mostly does ok as long as there is a white background. I have scanned in cards in sleeves and in binder pages with a sheet of paper behind them. MOSTLY works fine. It furiously hates foils at least on my iPad air 2. basically never reads them. It's super hit or miss on getting the right set if multiple sets use the same art. Theoretically you can scan whole pages at a time but it's likely to miss some or because of the aforementioned set issue it screws up a bunch and you have to back check everything so you are best doing one at a time.

Collection management: Pretty poor overall. As you are scanning cards they get added to a temporary holding list. You can then start a new collection or email it to yourself or a few other transfer options but you can't choose to add to an already existing collection. You can choose to add to an existing collection from it's screen but it's kind of weird and I don't super trust it.

Also there is absolutely no way to sort in app. It's just a horrible hodge podge of whatever order you scanned things(Mostly). You can't sort alphabetically or by price.

Also even though you can sign into TCG Player it doesn't actually tie into the the collection manager on the TCG Player website. And as far as I can tell you can't batch add to the website even if you email yourself the list of cards.

Random upsides: You can sell cards straight through the app on TCG player if that is your thing.

Overall: It's mostly functional but super clunky and missing a lot of options you'd want. I don't regret using it because I can just plug this poo poo into deckbox or something but It isn't that great.

EDIT: So it doesn't actually export in a manner Deckbox can accept because of the [SET] tagged onto everything. Apparently on android it can spit out CSV lists. I'm now more upset at it!

I used to use a combination of Delver Lens on my phone and Deckbox on my desktop PC for tallying up my collection back when I had a ton of them. The only hiccups I had was with a couple promo sets not working with Delver Lens' export option to Deckbox and Delver having the occasional problem properly capturing foiled and sleeved cards because of glare (which could be mitigated with a pure white background and making sure not to shine lights directly on the cards). It should also be noted that the Deckbox price lists aren't super accurate and take a bit longer to update after secondary market shifts if your main reason for digitally tracking your collection is trading and selling singles.

Deckbox does have pretty good import functions and their fully featured desktop site is accessible through your phone browser (I think you need to pay for their mobile platform).

Cho is Korean-American, but otherwise yeah he's gone completely down the chud path and will stick to it as long as there are people to buy his junk. Shame really, the guy's style has always been limited but it was (somewhat) unique and interesting. I do wonder why Marvel and DC haven't sent him a cease and desist of for using their IPs in his stuff, but I guess it would be more of a headache than it is worth.

The new mulligan rule is being tested at the Pro Tour, after which it will be implemented everywhere else because it is so absurdly good for formats that aren't nonsense, but you can ignore it for now. Also ignore the fact that they renamed the Pro Tour to something else, that'll probably get reversed in a few years.
